July Announcements

Before we begin with this month’s announcements, we have something important to say.

Due to many recent real life developments taking away the time our moderators could spend on The Far Shore as well as a lack of apps combined with a high drop rate, we have decided to begin moving The Far Shore into endgame. While we could put out a poll for more moderators, we feel moving into endgame is the best way to provide our players with a satisfactory conclusion to the game.

This does not rule out the game re-opening, if ever, but we feel that the level of changes needed to finish the transformation does not line up with the availability of the current mod team to get those changes implemented in a timely fashion, while also performing the regular mod duties to keep the game running. Points will be frozen after the final tally in early August, with mods continuing to process Regains for a few days after the final tally.

Currently we are looking at two options for endgame: 1) a simple ending and game closure, or 2) the ending log + turning the game into a proper sandbox - which means leaving the comms and everything open for logs and the like set in The Far Shore's setting. The ending would involve the Crystal allowing characters to leave/return to the setting, revealing how characters arrive in The Far Shore, and a general explanation of what the major NPCs will become busy doing, i.e. why they aren't available anymore. Regardless, the sandbox option would allow players to continue playing as they have been, with minimal to no moderator oversight. The game will be moving into endgame with the culminating event log posted by the mods going up August 1st. The poll will close on August 1st as well.

Thank you to all our players, past and present, for such a wonderful RP experience,
-The Far Shore Mods

Happenings

The Near Shore
All over the world, reports of ayakashi attacks are going down in frequency.
    • The rainy season is in full swing on the Near Shore, so pack an umbrella or two if you venture out!

At the base of Mt. Fuji are the Five Fuji Lakes, and of these lakes Lake Kawaguchi is the most accessible to tourists. This time of year, they host the Fuji Kawaguicko Herb Festival to showcase the 70,000 lavender flowers in bloom on the lakeshore. The festival is known for its lavender flavored soft serve ice cream and special events hosted throughout the season.

Just because it’s rainy doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do! Museums are always open, rain or shine, and there are plenty of interesting ones around on the Near Shore. From the Yebisu Bear Museum in Shibuya to the Edo-Tokyo Museum near Asakusa, there’s a museum for just about everything.

The Far Shore
After reviewing all of her findings in the matter of Sabimei vs Sotero and Votelli, Amaterasu will make an announcement on June 15th (OOC July 1st)
    • The nature of the crystal and dolls needs more research, so there will be a group descending on the library in the wake of her announcement.
    • While the research is being finished (during the next OOC month leading up to the Endgame log), those with magical inclinations are welcome to join Amaterasu's spellcasters, or allude to it going on as they go about their other business.
    • As chaos in heaven dwindles, so too does the chaos in the Near Shore. Many of the old gods have had less prayers to answer and less ayakashi to fend off, so they are spending more of their time around the Far Shore than otherwise, recently.
    • The reports of missing items will be resolved with the library event.

Noteworthy Ayakashi

Dusting off the Library

    One more mystery solved.
    • Meet the Library Spirit that's caused everyone to struggle finding the book they want all this time and (possibly) appease him so he won't keep intervening anymore.

    • With the Spirit placated, if you'd like to help the Crystal Research being done by Amaterasu's spellcasters, you can do so!

    • Help or hinder the librarians as they try to sort out which books and other bound volumes actually belong to the library and which ones were taken by mistake the last few weeks.

    • Treasure Hunt! A book date, but platonic. Help someone else find a book that they want and vice-versa, or give each other carte blanche to find anything at all that your friend (?) might like, then give it to them and see how you do!

    • Calligraphy Practice! Sometimes there's too many people in one section. If you're hating the overcrowded feeling, maybe sit down with someone else to practice Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji, or give someone else advice who's working to improve

    • IC Date: June 15th 2017

June Announcements

We sincerely apologize for the delay in this posting and the event due to multiple mod illnesses.

Happenings

The Near Shore
Summertime is heating up on the Near Shore!
    • Rice-planting culminated in May, but that means that a variety of local festivals are celebrating its completion during the first half of June! The most celebrated one is in Otaue on June 14 at the famous Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Osaka, Japan. It's said to be a favorite of Lady Suijin's.

    • While June is home to many seasonal flavors, a growing trend in Tokyo is Matcha Dessert Buffets! Don't miss out on these delicacies!

    • Love cats? All throughout the month of June in Naramachi, a section of the city Nara, hosts the Nyaramachi Neko Art Festival. There are giant cardboard cutouts, pottery, capsule toy machines, artwork, clothing, and jewelry all available for purchase in local shops! For the felines themselves, there's local initiatives spaying and neutering the strays, while attempting to find homes for them, and many a cat can be found at cat cafes. There's even a beauty salon which will apply makeup to customers to make them resemble performers in the play Cats.

The Far Shore
June in the Far Shore will not be quite as muggy as the rainy season in Japan down in the Near Shore, and for many of the gods it is being viewed with the solemnity of an Equinox, a transitory time period. Which kind? Who can say.
    • In the wake of the accusation of Sabimei by Sotero and Votelli, all of Amaterasu's shinki have been held within the temple grounds. All communications go through Koten or Kiten, part of Amaterasu's retinue, as they stand guard at the gates for messages. They allow no one in or out. Rumor is that Ikuten, her exemplar, is taking this very seriously, while Sotero and Votelli have been allowed to linger just beyond the gates.

    • In the same conversations where Sotero and Votelli's names come up - and with greater frequency - another question surfaces: "Maybe they're staying with him?" Then another: "What do you even call the place where he's been banished to? The Far Far Shore?" The answer is usually variation on the theme that places go nameless to keep them out of such conversations, and that applies to the people who live there too.
    • The reports of missing items continue, increasing in frequency. While the items continue to be categorized as "bound volumes" - books, papers, pamphlets, etc. - the focus on the traitor has taken everyone's attention.

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Hippocampus-like ayakashi are appearing around beaches. Since they look like horses, they are drawing in amused children, some of whom can't get back to the beach due to the undertow. Can you save the children while fending off the pods of aquatic ayakashi?

  • Little Dicks are the unsubtle nickname given to a variety of small ayakashi that are hovering around mass transit like trains and cabs, making polite people act rude and rude people get much worse. While the size of normal insects, when viewed up-close they more closely resemble the statues being carted around for certain phallus festivals, or more accurately a certain crude meme (cartoony NSFW). They have a source ayakashi somewhere; defeat it, and all the little tendrils will go limp.

Event

Cultist Arc Finale/Epilogue

We are going to have top-levels that are IC-ly spaced out over approximately 48 hours, but are all posted at the start of the event, and deal with the remnants of the Cultist Threat. We hope that this will help rebuild CR and introduce more opportunities for new CR in a team-like situation.
    • Cutting Ties! All of the rank & file NPC Cultists need to have their ties to The Far Shore cut; this will erase the NPCs' memories of their spellcasting skills, loyalties to the Cult, and disdain for Heaven. This can be done between god & shinki pairs, or your shinki character might consider trying it with a Soulless Shinki.

    • Blight Circles! One of the Cult's efforts to draw powerful ayakashi to them was by creating these circles in various parts of the world. The areas with these spellworked circles need to be cleansed and the ayakashi near them destroyed.

    • Cult Hubs! The physical structures where cultists met have a wealth of inventory to look through and either dispose of or use in future efforts for the Heavens. It might not be glamorous work, but it could offer surprising rewards.

    • Gift Baskets! For Gods and Shinki alike, Orihime will provide a gift basket to each and every character, customized as much as possible. This will include, among other things, an article of clothing with a wondrous power unlike any she's made before. Players can request what these items are OOCly, kind of like book requests in the library, but we hope it can to be something you as a player truly feel like is a reward to your character for having come this far.
Example abilities might include: hover-style flight, lite elemental resistance, green-thumb plant growth boost, etc. - they're just tied to the item.
Orihime would avoid granting items that help in battle; rather they're meant to enhance the character's everyday life, make their hobbies easier or more fun, that sort of thing.
Any character who tags into the event (top-level or response) will be eligible for a gift basket, ICly delivered a week after the event.

    • IC Date: June 2nd 2017

    • If you have any questions, or suggestions for Team-Based Wrap-Up Efforts, feel free to reply to the comment marked 'Event' on this post.
    • To participate in the event, you will just need to comment to the event log after it goes up on June 5 at 7PM EST.

May Announcement

  • Last month on May 2, Suijin held an exchange of information about various metaplot aspects related to the Cultists. Notably, characters insisted that Votelli and Sotero were not acting of their own volition when they attacked the Heavens.
  • On May 8, new arrivals were brought to the Meeting Hall for orientation and training. We introduced the prospect of other Temples hosting the training next month and received enough interest to move forward with this direction.

SOTG Follow-up

Gamewide Changes Post-Cultist Finale

Once the Cultist Arc is finished, we will be putting the finishing touches on the Game Design Changes:
    • Post the Setting Page (Formerly God 101 + Shinki 101)
    • Post the Game Timeline
    • Add available applications for Native Shinki characters
    • Add available applications for Canon OCs
    • For the upcoming TDM, we'll include an OOC Workshopping top-level. If this takes off, we'll consider an entirely separate entry for it!
    • Monthly Activity will now include TDM links for up to half of the submission. Details pending, but they will be added to the Monthly AC page plus the Activity Check Guidelines linked from those pages and the FAQ)

With these things accomplished, we will be posting a game-specific Enable-Me-Please as well as an ad on the community-wide EMP explaining that we're in a relaunch phase.

Up Next in Plot and Events

Mod Contact will be updated with the conclusion of the Cultist Arc as Kohaku formally steps down as World Mod, Rynn steps up to replace her, and Fae joins the mod team as a Plot Assist mod - mainly someone we'll bounce ideas off of, to help spread out the duties of creative idea generation.
    • Next up will be a fun filler arc in July and August, to give players and mods both a break.
    • Starting in September, we will have another metaplot relevant event, but after that we will alternate every other month, so the next metaplot relevant event won't be until November, then January. On the off months, we will focus on CR-building, Slice of Life, or otherwise non-metaplot related monthly events.

Returning per request, the Monthly Announcements!

Happenings

Something New!
With the new overhaul to how Prayers and Missions will be set up going forward, we're adding in a bonus option for all future Monthly Announcements. Incorporate the prompts or problems from the Happenings sections of the Announcement post for that month into any Prayer or Mission and receive an additional 10% bonus on your follower and experience rewards when you turn it in! Don't worry if you don't get it finished in the same month - as long as it is started within the month holding the Announcement Happenings you're using, you'll still get the bonus credit.

The Near Shore
It's starting to feel more like Summer than Spring.
    • Golden Week has come and gone, with the first term not ending until July 20th, so this is the start of a long stretch for Japan's students. It's so early in the term, in fact, that when some students are struggling with new concepts, there are plenty of ayakashi around to feed on that anxious energy! Clearing the air could help many students get off on the right foot for the school year.

    • Seasonal foods are widely available now! From asari clams to the tai fish of taiyaki fame, there's plenty of fresh seafood and sweets to savor this season.

    • The Blue Pond of Biei, Hokkaido is best enjoyed in the month of May. Last year, it was temporarily closed in August due to damage and raised water levels from Typhoon Mindulle. With snows completed receded, this is the first time for many tourists to fully enjoy the deep cobalt color of the Blue Pond since the Typhoon damage was repaired. With so many tourists coming by and so many photos being taken, plenty of ayakashi are milling about, making would-be photographers more frustrated by the heavy crowds.

The Far Shore
May is sweeping through the Far Shore and bringing with it warmer weather and vibrant splashes of color to many of the Temples.
    • The fields and hills of the Far Shore are covered with tiny blue flowers as far as the eye can see, looking almost like a pale blanket has been cast over the landscape. They carry with them only a light floral scent but anyone who wanders through them will find themselves in a strangely contemplative state as if the flowers themselves are encouraging a little self-reflection, or providing the perfect atmosphere to get lost in a rarely-indulged daydream. Be careful not to wander too far or too long, though, lest you forget what purpose brought you out to traverse through these flowers to begin with...

    • There is a lingering sense of both anticipation and anxiety lurking throughout the Far Shore, as the traitor still remains at large. Whispers overheard from the white-robed shinki or confided to trusted sources reaffirm that the Heavens are being searched for this person, as it's believed someone from the Far Shore is involved. A few hushed concerns can be heard wondering if that will be used, but the subject is always quickly changed afterward.

    • The announcement in the change of Training Temples each month has certainly offered one distraction among the shinki and gods of the Far Shore and speculation seems to be running rampant everywhere. Who will be chosen to host, who has a Temple better suited for it, and even if (from the more skeptical of the older gods and shinki) the new gods can pull off such a task successfully? There's been such a range of gossip and debate that several betting pools have started up, with wagers passing hands and challenges placed. While some try to be subtle about it, it's not hard for others to pick up on what's happening. Will you put a stop to it or start making a few wagers of your own?

    • Almost unnoticed in the background of all this hustle and bustle, there have been a few reports of things going missing in various Temples. Nothing big and nothing important, just small everyday items that have might also been misplaced, but it does seem to be happening with more frequency and a few people are taking notice. Is this just a case of people being forgetful or is there something else afoot? People are starting to mention it, and it seems most of the missing items are all things like books, papers, pamphlets, and other bound volumes... Coincidence?

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Creeping Moss ayakashi are appearing at the Shibazakura festivals all over the country, hiding low to the ground underneath the much more colorful Pink Moss flowers. Getting a bit of holy water on them might take out a branching vine of the ayakashi, but how do you get the whole thing without ruining the flowers?

  • Leaping Mantis ayakashi are lying in wait along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Since it's May, the giant Snow-Ice Wall is still intact, and they hide behind it until they can leap out at unsuspecting mortals. These Mantis can come in all shapes and sizes, from regular insect to just barely small enough to hide behind the Yuki-no-Otani at its deepest of 20 meters (65.6 ft).

Mystic Messengers' Mark

Inspired by two suggestions from our players!
    • All over Japan, the gods have been receiving prayers to control the deer and boar populations. However, some of the deer are sacred, particularly around Kasuga Shrine in Nara. New gods and shinki can partake in the hunting, or socialize in other ways, such as Archery and Falconry.

    • As the Heavenly Host is spreading out across Japan, they will be looking for the last vestiges of cultist activity. This will not be NPC combat; it's background spywork for the June finale, which the new shinki and gods can help with if they choose.

    • The start of the hunt - which includes a bento lunch - is scheduled to take place in Votelli's Forest, where the old gods expect to meet her face to face. (Sotero will also be present.) This is an opportunity for meeting them, in particular for those who haven't had the chance so far. By the end of the event, the Heavens will have made a decision about how to handle Votelli and Sotero, ascertaining their motives based on what they were told via the meeting with Suijin.

    • IC Date: May 15
    • If you have any questions, feel free to reply to the comment marked 'Event' on this post.
    • To participate in the event, you will just need to comment to the event log after it goes up on May 1 at 7PM EST.

SOTG Follow-up

Gamewide Changes

  • Over the next several days, we will be updating pages as outlined in our SOTG Response. We have already been working on the content, but we can't fix all of the links in all of the pages until those new pages are actually posted. Our goal is to have this fully completed by the time of the event.

  • To keep up to date on what we're changing, follow the Game Updates thread below. New comments will be posted as we go along. Once everything's done, we'll post a final update going over those same details, but only if the final form is different compared to what we announced previously in the SOTG Response.

May AC and Beyond

  • Due to the number of sweeping changes that the mods are implementing, as outlined in the SOTG Response, we will only require a check-in for May AC.

  • We hope this helps players adjust to the new systems

  • We also hope this gives everyone a chance to prepare however they'd like, IC and OOC, for the Finale of the Cultist Arc on June 1.

  • Next up will be a fun filler arc in July and August, to give players and mods both a break. Going forward, we hope to achieve the balance that was reflected in the results of our poll.

Monthly Point Totals

  • This month's update is now available. This update covers March's tag counts, March's Bonuses, and April's bonuses.

  • From now on, at the start of the month when the previous month's tag counts are tallied, the sheet will only have Tag Counts; it will be empty of Event Bonuses, Prayer Bonuses, and Regain Costs. This is because now, those will be granted live throughout the month on the most recently created sheet. Now, when the list mods respond to Prayer comments, Regain purchases, and Event Bonus comments, you can see that reflected right away, and even spend newly gained points on Regains.

  • As a one-time catch-up, we've already tallied April's tag counts up to April 26th, so you'll get access to those points immediately on May 1 regardless of mod availability to finish the April tally.

State of the Game: Player Suggestions Response

Preface: A blanket request from the mods to all players
As Suggestions, Plot Questions and other significant input need to be read and discussed by all mods before a response can be given, we ask that longer comments be organized with bullet points or split into single-idea comments to keep these thoughts easier to address. This will make it significantly easier for the team to read, consider and discuss each point and better serve the players by spending more time discussing useful suggestions and feedback and putting them into action where appropriate. Longer comments without a clear outline are much more difficult to parse and risk important points being overlooked, as well as dramatically increase the amount of time it takes for the team to read and discuss said suggestions and concerns and address them appropriately.

We appreciate those players who are taking care to use kind words to express their concerns to the mod team. At present, the mod team is doing its very best to dramatically revamp the game and share many of the concerns that have been raised by players. With the addition of new mods who are still getting their bearings - as well as learning and creating new rules to help the game run more smoothly for everyone - we appreciate your patience as we take steps to make the game more fun, accessible and hospitable to everyone involved.

Response to: Player Suggestions from the State of the Game post.

Prayers and Missions
  1. Make Prayers & Missions separate pages and link them on the Navigation Page / Sidebar - meant to simplify the ease of searching for particular prayer chains or missions.
  2. Both pages will not have tabs.
  3. Brief "Info" section explaining how Prayer threads are initiated: They come from the Near Shore and a God's followers (which are NPCs the mods don't run). These are prompts for those who don't wish to write up prayers of their own; they will be left vague and open-ended on purpose for players to adjust them to their circumstances or group accordingly.
  4. Clean out Prayers and Missions - streamline and remove entries that are no longer available or relevant
  5. Reorganize the remaining prayers and missions into an organized flow.
  6. Shift to a Claim system for Prayers - we will explain more about this on the Prayer page when we change over to it, but a few big ideas are as follows:
    • The Claim System will mean that non-custom Prayers are automatically approved, so players can begin threading immediately. See the next bullet for Custom Prayers explanation.
    • Mods will only need to reply when a completed Prayer link is provided to give rewards (or if there are concerns such as requirements not being fulfilled).
  7. Include an option for Custom Prayers, the only kind which will still require Mod Approval before starting the thread/log. This could include:
    • a player submitting something entirely of their own creation
    • tweaking an existing prayer prompt slightly to better fit a situation/setting.
  8. All prayers will have minimum follower counts removed to allow for a broader involvement from all our players.
  9. New prayer page gets a top level comment for new prayer suggestions (on a permanent basis) and also a top level for general "Questions?"
  10. Remove Prayer Suggestions page
  11. Indicate on the new Prayer Page which prayers require the Rend spell in order to be completed (indicating the need for a god-shinki pair). Potentially through color-coding or a symbol or simply a requirement of "Use the Rend spell to destroy the ayakashi". This will help differentiate which prayers will require a bonded team and which can be completed by any combination of CR.
    • We have added a clarification to the Gods' Abilities section to explain the word "Rend" needing to appear in a comment's text for the spell to be activated.
    • We are already planning on combining God 101 and Shinki 101, also addressed in the Setting section below.
  12. Missions Page will have two sections after "Info": Slice of Life Missions (ex: shinki spell training, god's holy day) and Plot Missions (NPCs, event follow-ups, etc.)
  13. Brief "Info" section explaining how SOL Mission threads are initiated: No special IC trigger at the beginning or the end
  14. SOL Missions are also on the Claim System:
    • The Claim System will mean that SOL Missions are automatically approved, so players can begin threading immediately.
    • Mods will only need to reply when a completed Mission link is provided to give rewards (or if there are concerns such as requirements not being fulfilled).
    • SOL Missions will continue to require minimum follower/exp counts due to the nature of these Missions and the rewards given out by them.
  15. Brief "Info" section explaining how Plot Mission threads are initiated: Missions are prompted by an NPC reaching out, or the character(s) reaching out to an NPC / the plot mod(s).
  16. Plot Missions require mod acknowledgment before starting the thread/log (often because these are of a custom nature).
  17. Plot Missions and their minimum follower/exp requirements will get further review after we've finished retooling prayers/missions and proceeded to the next plot arc
  18. For the remainder of the cultist arc, we will continue to use the existing follower/exp minimum requirements for plot-related missions. However:
    • Remember that only one character needs to qualify for minimum follower/exp counts in order for all participants to go on the mission.
    • Please see M27 (A mission for reputation), M30 (A mission of suspicion), M32 (A mission of curiosity), M35 (A mission for cartography), or M36 (A mission of whispers) for examples of plot-followup Missions where the follower/exp count minimums are not very high.

General Plot Concerns
  1. After cultist plot is wrapped, update the Premise page
  2. Monthly announcements will resume later this month, to include the Event Announcement for the following month and any prayer/mission additions
  3. More accessible metaplot information distribution and involvement is being looked at and discussed by the mod team as we move into a new plot arc and ways to make sure metaplot remains open to anyone who wants to participate in it.
  4. One such method will be a new Game Timeline, specifically focusing on cultist plot aspects and interactions with the major NPCs. When a new arc begins, a second matching page will be created. Each month, the Monthly Announcement will highlight any additions to the Game Timeline. The timeline will link to threads that are also tagged:
    • !cultist arc
    • !cultist arc: char discussions
    • !cultist arc: events
    • !cultist arc: npcs

Setting
  1. Combine Shinki 101 and God 101 into Noragami 101
  2. All FAQ information will be assessed. If it applies to The Far Shore as a DWRP game, it will remain on FAQ. If it applies to the Noragami Setting of the game, it will be moved to Noragami 101. This will give us a chance to assess and address the amount of information to make it more accessible and less overwhelming for all our players.
  3. Combine God Info and Shinki Info to one page with links to both Spreadsheet breakdowns + the God/Shinki pairing list, explaining that all 3 spreadsheets are just slices of similar information depending on what you're looking for
  4. Only require 1 comment for updates to god/shinki pairings on this new page
  5. Move FAQ to new page, with link to old one
  6. When answering FAQ questions going forward, if they are 1:1 answers from anywhere in the Game Info, we will screen the comment thread afterwards (to reduce comment clutter), leaving the only visible comment threads as those which are too specific to be included in the FAQ

God/Shinki Pairing
  1. Add to the FAQ's Application section: "Why you may want to play a Shinki" and "Why you may want to play a God" with a few bullet points for each
  2. On the Application page itself, in the App's explanation where we go over each section, the God/Shinki selection and Why? will get a link back to that new portion of the FAQ.
  3. List God Characters who need Shinki the most, to supplement the IDEA in the next comment below.

Note: Anything to address benefits for Noras weighed against the Heavens' disdain for Nora in the first place will be tabled until the World Mod has a chance to get on her feet and will be revisited at a later point.

We will begin to assign all of these items to mods as needed to get these changes implemented. We will give a progress update at the Monthly Announcement, since some items could be resolved/changed faster than others.

Once again, thank you for helping us make the game more enjoyable for the players,
- The Far Shore Mods
godsoffortune: (sui)
[personal profile] godsoffortune
We have added an additional announcement from Suijin to the Far Shore in advance of the April event log, explaining that she will have Metaplot information to share with those who come to the meeting. We hope that this will help players who OOCly wish for their character to be at the event, but their characters ICly felt like they were not welcome at the meeting - in particular due to not having any information to bring to the table.

Additionally, regarding the information that Suijin provides, we will mirror the top-level comments with each TOPIC as a new top-level. In each topic comment, Suijin will provide some information related to the topic at hand. From that point, it will be individual threading, or multi-character threads if you would like. All of these threads will still be addressed to the group at large, loud enough for them to hear and jump in if players would like. Each top-level will be posted several hours apart, as mods work together on their contents for many reasons.

This revokes our original plan to thread out Suijin conversing with the characters in a round format similar to the Second Fight thread from A Call To Arms.

Thank you very much for helping us propel the cultist arc to a conclusion,
- The Far Shore Mod Team

State of the Mods

As we announced recently, we've received assistance in the way of List Mods. What we still needed was a World Mod to replace Kohaku's efforts, as well as another Mod to spread out some of the duties previously accounted for by Kira. For about the last 3 months, you had 2 people doing the amount of work that used to be covered by 4. The Main Mods' time allocated to mod duties had been consumed with much more routine tasks. We tried to balance those tasks across both of us but were not satisfied with the results.

Today, we accepted an offer from Rynn to step in as the new World Mod, which means she is now a Main Mod as well. After she has a chance to ramp up to our processes, she will:
  • Answer FAQ questions
  • Read Applications for game canon compliance
  • Assist with Event, Prayer, Mission, and TDM by reviewing for game canon compliance

Even so, we are looking to wrap up the Cult plotline within 2-3 monthly events - see more below. After that is over, the balance of Slice of Life and MetaPlot is up for debate. You have a poll at the end of this post to help us decide what kind of game The Far Shore could be going forward.

State of the Metaplot

The game has been running on the consistent plotline of The Cult since the game started. With so many characters passionately invested in resolving The Cult plot line, we feel that they should be rewarded. We have an opportunity to completely wrap it up and start a fresh arc, so we'd like to take it. We believe this is in the best interest of the game. Once the Cult arc has concluded, we will update the Premise page accordingly.

We have ideas for a new arc that would be more sustainable given the amount of time the current Main Mods can dedicate to modship duties. We're not saying we have to close the game. It will include an overhaul of how Metaplot is handed out to players.

Right now, the way metaphor is handled is on the premise that we should keep it hidden and so specialized that only players who want to be involved can be, while other players who want to focus on Slice of Life and Character Dynamics can focus on that. The last time we took a poll about this issue, we came away with the impression that a significant chunk of the playerbase likes to RP both of these major aspects, so we've tried to continue to cater to both. The way we've done that so far - which was announced by the mods a long time ago - is by giving teaser concepts in some mod-run game events, while the breadcrumb clues that would eventually push the game into Endgame are reserved for Custom Missions - where only characters who go looking for more clues will find them. Additionally, this left room for player-suggested events. Notably in the past, we've enabled an Ageswap event, because a character in the game caused it to happen, not because of the Metaplot. We would welcome more player-driven events like that in the future.

Unless the poll tells us that the game is more interested in Slice of Life by a wide margin, future major metaplot hints will be handed out broadly to all characters, rather than in specialized NPC interactions and Custom Missions that require characters to pass on that information before it becomes widely known. We will begin to write out the major plot-demanding functionalities of the NPCs and remove Custom Missions as the only way to engage with them and fulfill plot goals.

Please trust that we're doing the best that we can with the time and resources that we do have.

April Event Announcement: Where Do We Stand?

The event post will not go up until April 4th in deference to both April Fool's Day and to allow for discussion time: the event itself will be a sanctioned mingle for characters to discuss big metaplot questions. Which ones though?

The mods will ideally create 3-5 top levels on the event post to help narrow discussion topics, as well as to assist players in finding relevant information later on. Please chime in below with what topics your characters are most passionate about resolving, getting answers for, etc. relevant to the Cultists. If you see a topic someone else suggested that you like, please add a +1 to it in some fashion.

The topics that players collectively most want to see addressed can then fuel both swapping of information during the event as well as how the mods wrap up the Cult plotline.

ICly, there will be a timespan without any Heavens bureaucrats present at the mingle. OOCly, one more top level will be included from the start of the event, which is when Suijin arrives to ask the characters what they have learned about the Compound, the Cult, and the recent oddities, which she can pass on to Amaterasu. In conjunction with OOC interest levels, what the characters tell Suijin will also affect how the Cult plotline gets wrapped up.

State of the NPCs

We will now begin the transition of NPC duties for Suijin and Votelli to Fru. We have introduced the OOC Contact Post for the NPCs. We hope that players will utilize that post to aid in satisfying their CR goals for NPCs in the game.

If players are not comfortable OOCly communicating with the NPC's player for any reason, they should contact the Main Mods.

Game Enhancements and a Poll

Prayer/Mission Help at CR Meme

As mentioned in our FAQ section on Prayers, for all prayers and missions that don't involve a requirement to destroy an ayakashi, there is no requirement for the requesters to be a bonded god-shinki pair. Gods can pair up with gods, shinki can pair up with shinki, gods can pair up with shinki they are not bonded to, etc.! However, we understand that fulfilling prayers and missions this way is unconventional, so we hope that our next suggestion will make that easier.

When we post the CR Meme in just a few more hours, we are going to start it with 2 top levels, to get players help fulfilling prayers and missions:
  1. One for players who have a clear idea of how they want to fulfill the prayer or mission, but just needs other players/characters involved.
  2. One for players who know they want to fulfill a prayer/mission, but needs help brainstorming ideas for how to fulfill them. Anyone - including moderators - could answer these requests, with no expectations that the same people answering might be involved in the final prayer/mission thread.

OOC NPC Contact

By popular demand, we have created an OOC Contact Post to mirror our existing IC Contact Post. This is our first step in enabling more access points to metaplot for players, as well as more visibility. You can also find it linked it near the bottom of the navigation bar between "mod contact" and "npc contact".

We hope that by using this format, mods and players both can better keep track of requests and discussions with NPCs. Additionally, should we ever have to transition NPC players again - knock on wood - this might help make that process a little bit smoother.

New Regains

We have added several new Regains to the game, with a focus on manifesting abilities that various Gods in Noragami canon display. We also chose to discount the two most expensive Regains (the new Alternate Form and Extra Power) for those characters who take advantage of moving their temples to the Northeast/Southeast Districts.

Some of these abilities can be purchased with Shinki exp and two require it by design, as our first Regains that require BOTH followers and exp: Improved Shinki Connection and Long-Distance Shinki Calling.

Two new Regains need a catch-up response similar to when we revisited Spells: Shrine on Near Shore and Purification Springs. Many Gods already had these in-game for various reasons, some from previous events, and we are not trying to say that those go away. We just want to document them going forward, so that new players will know they are options. Please respond to our comment below if your character already had more than 1 shrine on the Near Shore (the 1st is always in Japan) for any reason. Please also do this if your character has Purification Springs at their Temple (in the Far Shore) or at a Shrine (on the Near Shore). Thank you very much!

Possible Regain Page Reorganization

With the increased number of potential Regains, as well as increased participation by players in requesting them, we would like to propose a Suggestion: Should we change the Regain page to use one top-level per character?

If we do change the Regain page, we would take advantage of the opportunity to make the page with the ListsOfFortune account to better assist the List Mods. We could link a character's Regain top level on the Taken Page, so that's another question on the poll. This would allow us to keep the page a little cleaner by screening a whole character's top level if they dropped.

Votes are anonymous. We will close the poll at the end of March.

Our next post after the CR Meme will be our State of the Game, which should officially conclude our mod transition efforts, and event announcement for April.

Thank you very much to all of our players - you make the game possible!

4th Wall Event Information!

This is a new post focusing on the 4th Wall Event! We had some questions answered already, but if you have any more, feel free to ask them here!

Event Log | Network Post(s)

Fourth Wall Event
  • OOC Dates: March 16th-March 24th
  • IC Dates: April 22nd - April 26th
  • WHO? Any character! OCs, CRAUs, anybody! Doesn't have to meet the criteria of an appable character to the Far Shore. This is OPEN to any player, including those who are not currently in the Far Shore game!
  • Gods or Shinki? The player bringing their character in is welcome to have their character experience partial or full memory loss, but they will not have the power set of Gods or Shinki.
  • HOW? The Fourth Wall characters will appear on the same day that the Intro Log will be going up.

Gods and Shinki

As described in the Event Log, 4th Wall characters will generally be split up into the existing in-game categories of "Gods" and "Shinki" depending on whether they are experiencing memory-loss or not. "Gods" have no memory-loss and arrive with everything on their person at the time, while "Shinki" have full or partial memory-loss. This is how they will be treated ICly by the NPCs, but it doesn't mean they get all of the powers associated with those categories as described in our game's FAQs:
  • 4th Wall "Gods"
    1. Don't have a full-scale temple (in the Far Shore) or shrines (in the Near Shore) which would allow them to travel to/from the Near Shore, and have pools of purifying water to get rid of blight
    2. Can't teleport (see above)
    3. Can't name shinki (regular or 4th Wall), but Soulless Shinki will respond to their commands
    4. Have no additional God Powers, just their canon abilities

  • 4th Wall "Shinki"
    1. Can be named by regular God characters, but not 4th Wall Gods
    2. When named, 4th Wall Shinki don't convey their moment of death as a memory to their god/dess
    3. When named, can transform into a shinki vessel, but don't have a new Power
    4. Can't cast Borderlines or other shinki spells
    5. When outside of their vessel form, they can use all of their canon abilities
    6. "Full" Memory Loss: Shinki retain memories of their world, but nothing specific to themselves. For example, characters from many of the Final Fantasy products would recognize that horses aren't their normal mounts, Chocobos are, but wouldn't remember if they ever owned one, or what color it was, etc.
    7. "Partial" Memory Loss: In addition to the above, you could choose particular characters or events that your "Shinki" character does or doesn't remember, based on what would be most fun for you to play out.

Dibs for April

If your character is appable according to our FAQ, those who participate in the 4th Wall Event are invited to "Dibs" a spot for the April App Round. What this means is that your character can keep their memories of the 4th Wall Event and formally join the game as part of our April App Round if your application is approved.

By calling Dibs, you can start plotting with other characters for god/shinki pair-ups. ICly, this will be a process that takes place in-game during the first half of April that slowly transforms the character into a real God or Shinki with all of the powers and restrictions of characters who were apped in regularly. Dibs characters can also ICly stick around after the event until the next Intro Log (OOC Date - April 16th), when their transformation will be complete.

Note for Dibs Shinki going with the "Partial" Memory Loss option: they will have to return to a state of "Full" Memory Loss, where they only remember aspects of their world and nothing specific to themselves. If they experience anything during the 4th Wall Event that would conflict with this - such as interacting with castmates - then they will only retain hazy versions of these memories, such as thinking that was the first time they'd ever met the castmate.

We invite you to use this post for plotting and questions!

Mod Audit

Mod Communication Improvement

Since the start of the game, the primary method of communication among the moderators was Plurk. A single, new private plurk was made every month to contain our discussions. This process started to break down as we added List Mods - who we were trying to keep as blind as possible to metaplot discussions - and NPC Players - who we were trying to not overwhelm with List-related chatter, while also keeping them available for Main Mods and List Mods to ping. This necessitated the Main Mods to serve as go-betweens for the List Mods to the NPCs, since at the time we were running 3 separate private plurks: one for Main Mods, one for NPC Mods, and one for List Mods. Very quickly, we realized that this way was not going to work long-term, as we tried to make new plurks each month so they didn't drift too far back on people's timelines.

Since early February, as we trained up our new List Mods, we've trialed a new method: using the game's Discord server with proper roles and channels set up, which you can see in a screencap here. This gave us many benefits, but from a time perspective it gave us two big ones:
  1. Removed the extra delay in simple communication between List Mods and NPC Mods while retaining their separate channels to isolate discussion
  2. Removed an entire Main Mod task of making new private plurks each month just to coordinate mod efforts

Lists Shift

With our List Mods getting trained up and this new communication setup, we've been able to shift the Locations and Shinki Spells over to their jurisdiction. This means that we moved the pages to be hosted on the List account. If you left a comment on the old pages and the comment isn't reflected on the new pages yet, we do not need you to comment again.

All other game pages should have had their Locations and Shinki Spell links updated. If you find a link that didn't get updated, we will happily fix it if we are notified.

Additionally, they are working to clean up our tags on both [community profile] thefarshore and [community profile] thenearshore

Mod Audit Deadline

Now that we've reached some stability amongst the mod team in terms of communication and responsibilities, we are initiating an audit on our mod inboxes. If you have not received an expected response within the next 2 days, then we are truly sorry to have lost the comment, message, or email. We invite you at that time to please ask us again.

Once the Audit has been completed and we've had a few days to handle any requests that slipped through the cracks, plus adjust any processes as a result of that, we'll have a follow-up State of the Game announcement.

Thank you very much for supporting our transition efforts,

New List Mods!

It is with great appreciation we announce two new List mods to help us out by sharing the major List duties: Coco and Mikah! We've updated Mod Contact accordingly.

Those duties include:
  • Prayers Processing * ^
  • Regains Processing *
  • Reserves
  • Hiatus
  • App Status
  • Event Bonuses *

* They will still check with the Main Mods (Mel, Fru, & Az) in grey cases or when questions are raised.
^ They will do their best to contact the NPC Players when a Prayer or Mission needs their involvement, and again ask for help from the Main Mods if need be.

Please join us in thanking them!

Crunching Timelines

End of Month Efforts

We recently received a Suggestion asking that we work on processing Drops + updating the Taken List in a more timely fashion, so that it's done before Apps open each month. It's tougher with fewer mods, but we're going to aim for that to be true going forward!

There's one big thing that will help us make this a bit easier...

Activity Check Warning List & Tag Count Bonuses

Around the same time that AC is being processed, Reserves are opening, and we're getting ramped up for Apps, there's also the matter of Tag Counts. Historically, Tag Counts have processed in tandem with finalizing the monthly Drop List because we needed it for determining AC Bonuses.

From now on, those characters that end up on the AC Warning List are not eligible for receiving their AC Bonus. Who does get AC bonus then...?
  • Those who responded to AC on time. This includes HMD comments during eligible months.
  • Those who didn't respond, but are on Hiatus.
  • Those who accidentally ended up on the AC Warning List and that is later corrected by the mods. If the Tag Counts go up before this mistake is realized, we'll be happy to add in AC Bonus later.

This should stop Tag Counts from being posted much later in the month and also help the mod team hit our goal of having the Taken List updated in time for Apps opening each month.

Still Looking For Assistance

We've received just one offer for List assistance so far, but there are still more gaps that we really need to fill in order to keep the game enjoyable for everyone. Please see the previous announcement for details.

We appreciate everyone's understanding as we undertake these mod task changes,

The Great Mod Shuffle

Departures

As many of you are aware, Kira has been helping us transition all of her modwork in order to step down entirely. Well, that sad time has come, and Kira has officially stepped down.

In the course of these conversations, Kohaku has elected to step down as well for similar reasons, but will be available to the Mods for her own transition period as well. Please wish both of them the best and thank them for their contributions to the game!

We have updated the Mod Contact page appropriately. Please also remember that we will collectively remain available via the mod email, mod account Dreamwidth inbox, or mod plurk account.

Additions and Needs

NPC Players
A bulk of what Kira has contributed to the game that has been picked up by others already was the duty for playing new NPCs introduced to the game. We have updated the NPC Info tab of the Prayers page. To reiterate, though:
  • Votelli is now being played by Mchan
  • Sotero is now being played by Lin
  • Sabimei is now being played by Revise

What tasks remain?
While the remaining mods have tried to take on additional duties, per the Mod Contact page, we too only have so much bandwidth. We're primarily looking to fill the following tasks, which do not have to be 4 different people:
  • NPC Player for Suijin
  • "World Mod", meaning questions about Canon Compliance (FAQ Answers and Apps) as well as TDM Prompt Inspiration
  • Lists: Deaths, Spells, and Splitting duties / Backup for Rynn's current List Mod duties
  • Enable Me Meme posts

And now for something completely different... a new Regain!

The mods were asked recently about healing spells for Shinki. After discussions, we decided to allow something a little broader - new Custom Spells! Mods still have to approve them as with all Regains, but we decided to let a single character develop a new spell with a Regain.

In the case of the request, it was a healing spell, which is not available in canon at all. Other kinds of custom spells can be requested as well - use your imagination!

Then, after the Custom Spell is approved, it can be taught to other characters like all other spells using the rules detailed on the Shinki Spells and Songs page.

We appreciate everyone's understanding as we undertake these mod task changes,

January Announcements

Here we are again, bringing you the news of Near and Far Shore events for the month of January!

Happenings

The Near Shore
Spring has sprung, the flowers are blooming and the end of the school year is here.
    • Graduation is a happy time, but it can be bittersweet as friends go their separate ways. Partings seem especially bitter at a Tokyo high school afflicted by ayakashi who are provoking fights between formerly good friends! Someone should help clear out the pesky ayakashi and make sure everyone leaves on good terms.

    • Spring is the season of fresh greens, sakura desserts, and sweet strawberries! A new TV show called "Taste of the Earth" is holding competitions for the best food made from seasonal, local ingredients, and ambitious chefs from all over are aiming for first prize. Earn a little part-time cash helping them refine their recipes, hunting down rare ingredients (are you sure that's the right mushroom?) or just washing dishes -- and maybe you'll get to take home some of the leftovers for free!

    • The Sakurajima volcano in Kyushu, after a brief period of quiet, is resuming its title as one of the most active volcanoes in the world with an explosive eruption March 25th.

The Far Shore
Late March is a quieter time in the Heavens, as many gods begin spending more time on the Near Shore with the advent of festival season and to help bring good luck to farm, sea and forest.
    • Unfortunately, after a brief period of blossom, the cherry season in the Heavens seems to have ended early; although other flowering trees are fine, the cherry blossoms have all fallen, and the remaining flower buds are withered. Instead of blossoms, the trees are simply putting out green leaves. At least no one's going to get drunk on the scent of the flowers any more this year....

    • The usual white-robed shinki patrols are almost completely absent, except for the guards around the Meeting Hall and at Amaterasu's temple. They seem to be busy elsewhere. In their absence, troublesome wild spirits are more likely to wander into populated areas. Ghostly fireflies that lure travelers astray, wild boar and bears raiding kitchens and gardens for their dinner, mischievous tanuki, monstrous catfish in the rivers: even in the Heavens, gods and shinki will have to be careful.

    • An abandoned temple on the northern edge of the Western District has been taken over by the world's biggest beehive, and some of the older child shinki are challenging each other to sneak in as a test of courage. Will you dare the Beehive of Doom? Or will you put on a bee suit and turn exterminator before this problem spreads?

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Beckoning ayakashi are appearing at dangerous intersections, luring distracted pedestrians out into the road at exactly the wrong times. They're big, slow ayakashi, and easy to beat in a fight: the trick is to make sure no one gets hurt before they're defeated.

  • Butterfly ayakashi are fluttering around scenic spots and homing in on negative emotions. Once they land on someone, they'll settle in and start to drain away all of their best memories, wings growing bigger and more garishly colored as they leave their victim dwelling on only the worst of times.

Weather
Here you can see the weather starting on March 1.

Event

Dragon Dance

    • The Sensou-ji temple in Asakusa is holding their yearly festival to commemorate the appearance of Kannon in that location that inspired the temple's founder. Unfortunately, Kannnon's still missing after being reincarnated as a new arrival -- and disappearing -- months ago. The Heavens are concerned about the event going to plan, so they've asked new gods and shinki to stop by the festival and keep a keen eye out, since, unfortunately, Heaven's forces are busy. (And, of course, they can enjoy the festival, too!)
    • IC Date: March 18
    • If you have any questions, feel free to reply to the comment marked 'Event' on this post.
    • To participate in the event, you will just need to comment to the event log after it goes up on January 1 at 7PM EST.

December Announcements

Here we are again, bringing you the news of Near and Far Shore events for the month of December!

Happenings

The Near Shore
It's March, and the very first cherry blossoms are starting to bloom across the island of Honshu! Finally, spring is here.
    • Crowds are packing favorite cherry blossom viewing spots. Join them to relax with a good drink, enjoy seasonal treats and beautiful views, and bring good fortune by making sure no one who overindulges in plum wine ends up falling in a ditch.

    • It's the Year of the Rooster, and in addition to good luck charms and promotional items, real roosters are showing up all over Tokyo. Is this a prank? A good omen? A mass escape from a feather farm? Wherever these birds came from, their early morning crowing is making a lot of enemies. Help clear the cocky birds out before sleep-deprived office workers turn them into chicken kebab.

    • The Tokyo Museum has an exhibit of beautifully carved Hina-matsuri dolls from different eras of Japanese history this month, and it's a big draw-- but maybe the old superstition about not leaving the doll displays up past March 3 is right, because it seems like couples who visit the exhibit keep breaking up! Help clear out the lurking ayakashi that are bringing bad luck in love.

The Far Shore
Spring is fully here, and the weather is mild and beautiful as cherry blossoms join the plum.
    • The burned cherry grove near the Meeting Hall still shows signs of char on trunks and branches, but, surprisingly, it has burst into full bloom with the advent of Spring. The scenery is truly heavenly, and visitors don't even need to bring their own wine to enjoy a blossom viewing in this grove. The scent of the sakura flowers alone is enough to get drunk on... literally, for those who linger under the trees for more than a few minutes.

    • The spring edition of "From Ama" has been released, featuring advertisements, candid shinki interviews, advice from how to get along with your god to the best strategies for borderline practice, and plenty of photographs. In fact, it looks like their photographer has paparazzo tendencies: a lot of those photos are candid shots of the Heavens' denizens, in moments when they could have sworn they weren't being watched. Secret worries, embarrassing habits, stolen kisses -- is that Bishamon in a hot spring wearing nothing but a censor bar?!

    • A mystery benefactor is leaving thoughtful gift baskets on doorsteps across the Far Shore. Sweet snacks and savory, toys, trinkets, flowers and accessories fill the baskets, but none of them have a card or hint about the gift-giver, except for one thing: they all have the same pretty pink-and-green ribbon bow.

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Umbrella ayakashi are lurking in public umbrella racks outside stores and restaurants, spreading an atmosphere of gloom and misery. It's really hurting business at the unlucky establishments they frequent. Help out some shopkeepers by clearing up their umbrella problem, but be careful: they have big, sharp teeth!

  • Clouds of gnat ayakashi are swarming around outdoor parties. Their tiny bites provoke mortals, turning happy family outings into angry fights, and swell up into big, nasty, blight-ridden welts on any unlucky Far Shore denizen who gets in their way.

Weather
Here you can see the weather starting on March 1.

Event

Doll's Festival

    • It's Hinamatsuri! Join other gods and shinki to celebrate the festival on the banks of Tokyo's rivers, and help guide boats carrying straw or paper dolls out to sea to carry away ill fortune and impurity. But look closely -- there's something weird about those dolls...
    • IC Date: March 3
    • If you have any questions, feel free to reply to the comment marked 'Event' on this post.
    • To participate in the event, you will just need to comment to the event log after it goes up on December 1 at 7PM EST.

Regarding the Monthly Tag Counts

The Problem

What happened?
We had a problem with our automated process for calculating tag counts. The result was that we lost tag counts for about two weeks in the middle of September. We know this based on some timestamps.

How we tried to fix it
We reached out to Dreamwidth with a service ticket, citing the issue as a bug with unpaid accounts when their inboxes are maxed out. Unfortunately, they did not get back to us with a solution.

The Solution

For Mods: Process Change
The bug does not appear to affect paid accounts, so for now our solution is to keep our tracking account paid.

For Players: A September Event Bonus
As for tag counts themselves: September's tag counts will have an Event Bonus for all characters that were in the game that month. That Event Bonus is a complicated equation that, in short, is meant to be our best guess of what each character would have earned during the two-week down-time of our tag counting process. The Event Bonus is calculated in a similar way for all characters, as described below.

We started with trying to find a character’s average Total Comment Bonus, which includes both Network and Log totals but nothing else. We averaged October, September, and August when possible, and dropped October or August when it wasn’t available. For characters who were new in September, this was a strict average between October and September’s numbers, since the front half of September was more affected than the latter half, so of course new characters were less affected by the time they apped in. For all existing characters, we double-weighted September’s numbers when finding the average.

Once we had the Average, we took 30% of that number and rounded it up to the nearest whole integer (for Gods) or nearest 1 decimal place, or tenth of a digit (for Shinki). Then, we rounded up one more time - to the nearest multiple of 5 (for Gods) and the nearest multiple of 0.5 (for Shinki) - so that the final Event Bonus number is one that could have reasonably come from the normal tag count tallying.

The Calculation

Here is a sample for a Shinki that was apped prior to September.

Green is September's Total Comment Bonus getting the double-weight, Blue is finding the average, Red is doing the first round up, and Black is the final round up to a real Event Bonus number:
=CEILING(ROUNDUP(AVERAGE(vlookup($B66,'August 2018'!$B$2:$K$187,4,false),vlookup($B66,'October 2018'!$B$2:$K$187,4,false),E66*2)*0.3,1),0.5)

Here is the same calculation, but if it was for a God, with the changes bolded:
=CEILING(ROUNDUP(AVERAGE(vlookup($B66,'August 2018'!$B$2:$K$187,4,false),vlookup($B66,'October 2018'!$B$2:$K$187,4,false),E66*2)*0.3,0),5)

November Announcements

Here we are again, bringing you the news of Near and Far Shore events for the month of November!

Happenings

The Near Shore
Happy Valentine's Day! The spirits of true love (and the ayakashi of resentment and loneliness) are in the air.
    • A new reality show just entered filming! Each participant gets a "target" from among the other participants, and they have to dodge their pursuer while finding their target and tagging them with a special neon ink. Any delivery method goes: water balloons? Squirtguns? Paintball guns? Fountain pens? Disguise?? No one knows who to trust, but there's a lot of collateral ink splatter going on!

    • Now that Valentine's Day is past, men who've gotten chocolates have to come up with a good return gift for White Day. Give hapless romantics a hand with some good suggestions, and encourage love to blossom.

    • The Tokyo Marathon is scheduled for the final weekend of the month! It makes a circuit through central Tokyo, and even non-runners can enjoy a day out cheering on the participants. All of that competitive spirit, and the fears and hopes of the runners, can draw ayakashi in, too: they might need some help keeping the course clear.

The Far Shore
The weather is beginning to warm as the calendar inches towards March. There's no more snow, and buds are beginning to appear on trees throughout the Heavens.
    • As the flowers from the ash fall continue to sprout and bloom, plum blossom trees are also beginning to break into flower. Their scent permeates the air, and residents of the Heavens will notice that staying near the flowering trees strengthens their resolve and makes them feel more energetic and enthusiastic. Keeping the flowers on them will even repel ayakashi on the Near Shore.

    • The weather is surprisingly good, with blue skies and bright sun every day. Even though it's still chilly at night, small animal spirits are showing up everywhere. Rabbits, birds and squirrels throng the Heavens, and there's lots -- and lots -- of birdsong. Hope no one minds waking up at dawn....

    • The new edition of "From Ama" is due to come out soon! Its writers are roaming the Heavens, interviewing new and old gods and shinki and looking for interesting stories and quotes. They're particularly interested in the new gods and shinki, and they're also accepting advertising on any topic under the sun.

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Winding-sheet ayakashi are drifting through abandoned places, snaring the rare passersby and wrapping around them to lure them into misfortune and despair.

  • Angular frog ayakashi are hopping around the Near Shore. They're strangely reluctant to bother mortals (although they will if there are no gods or shinki around) but they have a particular preference for attacking beings of the Far Shore: gods, shinki and even helpless wandering ghosts. They're resistant to attacks, too, requiring good teamwork to defeat.

Weather
Here you can see the weather starting on February 1.

Event

Love Is in the Air

    • Two shinki have devised a special set of blind dates for residents of the Heavens who tragically lack Valentine's Day plans. Characters will start the day with a romantic brunch, visit an aquarium at midday and spend the evening at an amusement park! But with all the love in the air, there are some malicious ayakashi stalking the date spots, too, and some additional support might be needed to help protect the lovebirds. Characters who want to sign up can go here for IC signup, or, if you prefer to sign up OOCly, please reply to this post with the following information: the characters who you want to sign up, any specific requirements you have for their dates, and the number of dates (1 - 3) you want them to go on.
    • IC Date: February 14
    • If you have any questions, feel free to reply to the comment marked 'Event' on this post.
    • To participate in the event, you will just need to comment to the event log after it goes up on November 1 at 7PM EST.

October Announcements

  • Last month on January 30 and 31, a dream plague sent gods and shinki alike to sleep, and allowed them to travel into each other's dreams, trying to wake up the sleepers before they were trapped forever in a dream.
  • On February 6, new arrivals were brought to the Meeting Hall for orientation and training.

Player Plots

After the dream event, a giant ape rampaged through the Western District before he was stopped by a few gods who identified a weak point in his tail.

If your characters have been up to anything this month that other characters may have noticed -- parties, ayakashi attacks, violent rampages through the Far Shore -- leave a comment on this post to let your fellow players know what's going on!

A Special Message from Amaterasu

Has your character gotten involved in any missions involving cult activity, contacted Amaterasu or her shinki offering help, or brought information to Amaterasu or her shinki regarding the activity of the mysterious gods attacking the Heavens? Amaterasu is reaching out to characters who have assisted her or offered their help, hoping to share important information. Please reply to the comment with the subject line "Special Message from Amaterasu" below with the name of the character you want to be involved, and a brief note about what, if any, information your character would have shared.

Please note that it's OK to reply if you're interested in getting your character involved, even if you haven't threaded out an offer of help or information sharing. Handwaving is fine!

October Announcements

Here we are again, bringing you the news of Near and Far Shore events for the month of October!

Happenings

The Near Shore
It's February! The cold and gray weather still lingers, but brightly colored chocolate displays are popping up in every store from exclusive to convenience to counteract the chill.
    • Feb 3 is Setsubun, marking (despite the weather) the official beginning of spring. Bean-throwing rituals to cast evil spirits out and welcome happiness in are a part of the Setsubun tradition, and all of those freshly evicted spirits are wandering the streets in annoyance, looking for a new place to settle in.

    • The approach of Valentine's Day means a sudden influx of prayers from young women looking for divine guidance for their romantic troubles. Do they dare make homemade chocolates for the cute boy in homeroom? How can they make sure that their crush realizes that this isn't just obligation chocolate? Please, God, let this batch look good!

    • A high-class department store in Ginza is holding a huge sale, and people are going wild for it! Fights are even breaking out over the best deals or the last available items. The poor sales staff can't keep up with this mayhem, and it's supposed to last for an entire week. They need help keeping the peace... and if you just wanted to snag some amazing designer deals, it's bound to be easier for an invisible shopper!

The Far Shore
It might be spring according to the lunar calendar, but it's still chilly and sometimes even snowy in the Heavens. The camellias continue to bloom, and the frosty tracery on windows lingers.
    • The koi seem to have been annoyed by the volcanic eruption. Although they're back in their usual haunts among the rivers and canals of the Far Shore, they're in a terrible mood, and prone to spit well-aimed pebbles at unsuspecting passersby or declaim ominous or insulting haiku. It's probably best just to ignore them, if you can.

    • Wherever ash from the volcanic explosion lingers, despite the cold, beautiful new flowers are sprouting. Creeping purple and white wildflowers, spikes of red blooms, big golden cup-shaped poppies and more; none of them are quite familiar, but they're all very pretty.

    • The number of crows in the Heavens seems to have increased markedly. Maybe they were chased out of their mountain homes? Regardless, flocks of them can be seen lingering in trees, lining up on fences, or hopping around looking for small animals or fallen chestnuts. Those who offer them food or treat them well might find that the crows begin bringing them small gifts in return: coins, broken jewelry, or other little treasures. Those who throw things or shout may find that they've made many very clever enemies with wings.

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Oni ayakashi are stomping through the streets, glaring and shaking their horns at everyone as they look for a new place to stay. Wherever they settle in, bad luck and bad tempers will flare.

  • Sparrow ayakashi are fluttering from place to place, nesting under the eaves of homes and twittering endlessly about the bad intentions of those around them. Those who listen to the sparrows too much will find themselves spreading malicious gossip, too, and believing the worst of everyone they meet.

Weather
Here you can see the weather starting on February 1.

Event

Sweet Dreams

    • A strange sleepiness is spreading through the Heavens. People who fall asleep are hard to wake up, and the people who touch them find themselves settling down for a nap too... and, while they sleep, gods and shinki alike will find themselves wandering into other characters' dreams. The world of dreams can be terrifying, but it can also be seductive. To escape, they will have to help each other realize that their dreams are only dreams, before they find themselves sleeping forever.

A few badly-behaved shinki drew attention to themselves this month: Joscelin Fitzthomas went on a rampage through the Central District and injured several white-robed Heavenly shinki, and Sha Gojyo tried to punch his way into Amaterasu's temple for a talk.

Mod Announcement & Call For Volunteers

Hello all, Kira here! I am planning an upcoming cross-country move and change in career next spring. I'm excited about the opportunity, but unfortunately as it gets closer I'm not going to have a lot of free time -- and because of the new job I expect to not have much reliable free time for at least a year afterwards.

Because of this, I'm going to have to step down as a mod of The Far Shore after our January 2019 event. That event should mark the wrap-up of a few of the plot threads that I've been writing, but others will remain open, and we hope to be able to continue as a game! To do that, though, we will need your help -- we're looking for anyone who has interest in writing events, announcements and intro posts, in playing NPCs, and in helping to maintain lists.

Are you interested? If so, please contact us at godsoffortune@gmail.com OR hit me up on Plurk at [plurk.com profile] tinwateringcan.

September Announcements

Here we are again, bringing you the news of Near and Far Shore events for the month of September!

Happenings

The Near Shore
Mid to late January is the bleakest, grayest time of year. The weather is relentlessly chilly, making this a great time to stay in and keep the kotatsu warm.
    • It's a nasty year for winter colds! It seems like half the people on the street are sneezing into gauze masks behind their scarves. Help mortals get better by dropping off cough syrup and hot takeout soup, but be careful not to catch anything yourself.

    • The ski season is in full swing. It's the perfect time for a day (or weekend) trip and some winter sports fun!

    • It's almost the end of the season for most of Tokyo's illuminations. Thanks to a little divine help, they're all in good working order, and the beer gardens are doing a brisk business. Why not drop in before the end-of-season Valentine's Day rush for a pleasant evening viewing the lights with your friends or your date?

The Far Shore
Snow is more frequent this month, although most days are still beautifully clear and chilly. The light dusting of snow cover brings out the aesthetics of the Heavenly gardens, and it makes great snowballs if you catch it before it melts.
    • Camellias are bursting into bloom all over the Heavens as well as on the Near Shore. The showy flowers seem to spark emotion in anyone who holds them or lingers too near their trees. Yellow blossoms inspire a sense of longing for things lost, white blossoms grant patience and calm, and red blossoms inspire romantic love.

    • With the cold weather, frost can be found on windows by any shinki or gods who happen to be early risers. Unlike mortal frost, the frost in the Heavens forms into artistic images, like ink paintings or calligraphed poems that melt away with the rising sun. The poems probably don't mean anything, but some of them are oddly relevant to the household they're written on.

    • The spirits of wild boar seem to enjoy this time of year. With little striped piglets in tow, they're trotting down from the wilder areas around the Heavens, moving into front yards, rooting up gardens and chasing the residents. The piglets are adorable, but watch out! The grown-up pigs are fast, and strong for their size.

Noteworthy Ayakashi
  • Lantern ayakashi haunt mountain snowstorms, especially in the northern prefectures. Their glowing lights and plaintive cries lure well-meaning mortals out into the storm to attempt a rescue, drawing their targets far away from warmth and safety and preying on their despair and eventual death.

  • Ribbon ayakashi are tangling around unsuspecting pedestrians in the streets of Tokyo, confusing them and stoking fear and mistrust of others. Unless the ayakashi is dispelled, they will continue to draw tighter, and their targets become paranoid, even violent, as they become convinced that even their closest friends are their enemies.

Weather
Here you can see the weather starting on January 1.

Event

Blow Your Top

    • A peaceful January is interrupted by a rumbling earthquake and the violent eruption of the volcano that experienced a smaller eruption earlier in the year. The Western District temples are menaced by ash, lava, and volcanic gases. Is this really a "natural" disaster, or is it another attempt to strike against the Heavens? Travel up the volcano's slopes, if you dare, to find out.
