TEST DRIVE # 09



Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.



Old Officials

There's a business that is desperately wishing the older members of their workforce would bow out. They've been sitting on death's door for so long and are doing little to help the company. The younger managers only want to step up and take their place! Help convince these ancient businessmen to step down.

Peanut Party

A celebration for peanuts is sweeping through the city. Peanut butter, peanut cookies, even just plain peanuts are being sold, thrown, and praised all over. It's your job to help spread the peanut love, either by helping to make the tasty treats or by buying more peanuts from the next town over.

Quiet Quail

Oddly enough, a request has come in from a quail, of all creatures. It thinks very highly of itself and knows that it's super mega important, but it has such a hard time being anything but quiet. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to draw attention to this quail - make it stand out like not other quail has done before.

Roaring Riders

A rowdy motorcycle gang has been plaguing the streets for a few weeks. Every night, at midnight, they make their engines roar out in unison, waking everybody in town. The riders themselves are good guys, they just have this one nasty habit that they refuse to give up because it pays tribute to their patron god. Do you have the heart to get them to quiet down?

The newest tourist stop is a large casino. It's said that everyone who enters the casino has their luck stolen from them at the door. That might just be silly superstitions and bad gamblers talking, but there is definitely an ayakashi there who seems to feed on people's luck. Maybe that's what's causing everyone to lose so much.

For now though, the Sanzo priest is just crouched next to the bird with a cigarette in her hand, observing it peck at the ground shyly.]

But, an ayakashi eating people's luck probably counts as "cheating" and it's only a matter of time until it moves on to more substantial meals. She should probably do something about it.

Sharak is stood just to the side of the casino entrance, watching humans enter. A small ayakashi darts down from the ceiling and circles a man's shoulders before escaping with it's meal again and Sharak's eyes narrow.]

[ shiemi isn’t entirely sure how she got into this situation … some complaints from the residents, most likely. and being the type of person (or, well, god) turning down a seemingly easy task didn’t look all too hard at the moment. she just wanted to help, honestly.

it would’ve been easier however of the motorcyclists were, well, bad guys. shiemi feels a tremendous amount of guilt for telling them to stop doing what they believed to be right, but she had a job to do and she wasn’t going to stop trying at least.

but she does feel somewhat perturbed from her mission with almost a dozen men circled around her, engines on in full blast and they can barely hear her as she lists off the numerous complaints against them. not to mention is was late at night; shiemi had her work cut out for her.

[ Here's the thing. Eichi's followers tend to be early riser, so this problem is not news to him, but he'd sorely hoped someone else would look after it. It's clear right now that someone is certainly trying but she's not looking terribly effective. How unfortunate.

One of the wonderful things about being a god is the immortality part. Eichi enjoys it a great deal and it's especially handy in moments like these. It makes him utterly fearless. A flawless entrance is the easiest thing but to get their attention, shouting won't do, so Eichi steps from the shadows into the nearest streetlight and intensifies the light there until it's impossible to ignore. Sorry about your retinas, Shiemi, they may well be a temporary casualty.

Once at least one of the riders has turned to look at him, Eichi speaks. ]

He thinks he sees a face on the other side of the counter but he's soooo not able to fill any orders right now. ]

[ Sometimes you have to go past the obvious solution, so rather than confronting the riders themselves, Mao is lurking not at all suspiciously around their leader's house and garage. He's already checked that the motorcycle is inside, and if he can disable the bike somehow, well, hopefully that'll save people at least one night's worth of noise and that's a start.

He has no idea how to do that or if that even qualifies as answering this prayer, but he wants to do this with as little drama as possible. Confrontations just go badly and these aren't bad guys. Just insensitive. Breaking their motorcycles won't change that but it'll buy a little time to figure out how to. Maybe. ]

The heavy sighs, the discontent way they go about their work at their desk, the downcast stares that fall on this week's offering of free snacks in the break room.

I'm not really sure what to do to help. The managers will retire eventually. They're just afraid of not having anything to do with themselves when they do. I can't blame them. I can't blame anyone.

He spins towards her, eyes going wide in a face that, thanks to the limiters cinched onto his ear (this is human territory; if he needs to speak to them, he doesn't want to scare them), looks like the shinki's she would have known.

Well peanuts aren't her favorite food ever the way that these people are celebrating them, but she thinks it's really great that these people can get so excited together! Any sort of holiday that brings people closer is a good one to her. She hops a ride on a bus to the next town over, but it still has to make several stops in the town before it gets to the next town over. Maybe some other Gods or Shinki will be joining her? She really doesn't want to walk that whole way - she needs to save her strength for carrying the peanuts back!

Kairi kneels down to smile at the quail. "I've never spoken to a bird before, I don't think... not like this." She laughs a bit. "Maybe when I was a little kid? I'm sorry I don't remember, but if you can tell me what kinds of things you'd like...?" She starts nodding as the quail answers.

Then she stands up and heads out with a grocery list: an amazing perch high off the ground, a beautiful ribbon to trail from its legs - but not too long or it can't fly, and delicious bird food that it can spread out all around to draw other birds to see its glory. Kairi walks a leisurely pace through the Heavens, looking for any temples that might be able to part with some supplies. This part feels familiar - having a loose idea of what she wants to make and having that 'I'll know it when I see it' feeling. Maybe she can find some others to help her out.

Was this her? His thoughts go right to Sora, and he hopes that she knows who that is. With Riku having been a shinki, Roxas isn't sure he could take Kairi being one, too. It's then he notices the list. Well, the safest way to figure out just what she is is to approach her. "Are you looking for something?"

[Among all the peanut products being peddled today, some of them are stranger than others. Some of them are being peddled by Gau, who's somehow been talked into wearing an apron with a cartoon peanut on it and standing outside a certain cafe, holding a tray of free samples.

He's that guy. He wouldn't ordinarily be noticeable, but the fact that his peanut apron comes with a matching peanut hat does help. This is torture. This is the worst part-time job he's ever had.]

[Somehow, Gau has angered this quail enough that - while it's still silent - it's trying its best to flee from him. And it's succeeding, darting through small crowds and eventually into a local park much faster than Gau, skinny nerd, can run. He's still making an effort, though, and hollering the whole way about how it needs to cooperate with him if it wants its prayers fulfilled!!

The irony is lost on him. People are already staring.

Finally, he does what anyone reasonable person would do and lunges for it; it's a pretty good jump, but Gau's affected by gravity in a way things with wings aren't, and he misses by a feather and hits the ground hard. The quail lands on his back, preening. It still hasn't made a sound.

He's going to eat it, he swears.]

Gau's effort will go to waste, and they'll have to start over again, this time with a pre-emptively angry client.

With a great shove of mental effort, Ami breaks her invisibility exactly long enough to grab and hoist up the quail, look directly into its eyes, and announce:]

[ Make a peanut celebration a grand one? Not a problem for a goddess of rejoicing! This is what Freyja tells herself as she sets off to help with a bright smile and donning a little peanut costume to cover her heart-shaped rune. She isn't great at cooking or baking but she has an easier time with decorations. Cookies are frosted with adorable peanut people doing a variety of things while cupcakes feature marshmallows shaped to look like peanuts!

Some might even feature girls with brightly colored hair or the name Walküre on other ones. How strange! ]

[ Obviously the easiest way to get anyone's attention if with song! Which is why one Freyja Wion is now in town, quail atop her head as she sings and dances for anyone that is willing to listen. Of course, she's changed certain parts to reference the quail instead and it might lyrically be a little strange but it's the thought that counts! She sang to help others and that absolutely included cute little birds.

It helps that she is probably having too much fun with putting on a show. ]

[Sheryl doesn't usually stop and listen to any musician who puts on a show unless they are really good, or at least have a spark of potential hidden underneath vocals. Let's say it's not just the quail on top of Freyja's head that catches the Galactic Fairy's attention, silly as it may be.

She stops in her tracks, turning around to face the sight before her as a pair of cute yet very strong vocals reach her ears, keeping her rooted to one spot. Whoever this is, she sure knows how to take over the stage and make it hers! The way she dances is so joyful that it'd be hard not to notice.

Which is why Sheryl claps after the song ends, approaching Freyja with confident steps.]

It's not everyday that I get to see such a lively performance.

[Unluckily, his enthusiasm's gotten the better of him, and while he can carry all these crates just fine, he can't really see where he's going. Even worse, someone's just gotten in his way. Boxes fall, peanuts fly, but Kuwabara keeps his balance]

[A bunch of punks causing trouble? You bet Kuwabara's there. He went all by himself with every intention of taking them all on at once, but well. He forgot one little important detail.]

[They're all on motorcycles and he's not.]

[Now he's trapped in a ring of whooping and hollering riders, all of them throwing taunts and jeers, some of them popping wheelies, some of them reaching out to give Kuwabara a shove as they pass close by]

Aw come on, knock it off! [he shouts as he stumbles from a recent shove] Isn't one of you man enough to get off your bike and fight me one on one? Heck, I'd take you all on if you'd just get off your stupid motorcycles!

[Schuldig's wandering around nearby when the roar of the motorcycles catches his attention. He's never minding his own business, not in the Far Shore and not in the Near Shore either by a long shot. However, this guy is entertaining him a bit with just how brazen he is. Alright then.]

Well, let's start with just one.

[He mutters to no one at all and then reaches out with his powers to seize the mind of a Rider. One of them locks up temporarily, his legs going straight and his body wobbling. The guy goes sprawling onto the pavement near Kuwabara's feet - not remotely dead, just a little bruised from the fall, while his bike goes skidding towards the ring and interrupts the slow-moving flow of the other riders.]

'Now's your chance.'

[That's all he whispers to Kuwabara personally - not a literal nudge like he COULD give if he wanted to, but maybe enough of a snap for anyone with a hair-trigger for combat.]

[ The prayer itself seemed to be rather simple and cut-dry; Find the luck-stealing ayakashi and take them out. The only real problem was that there was enough people that it wasn't immediately noticeable as to whom it latched on to. Or if it was hiding in general.

Even without her memories, the very golden woman kept looking over at the betting tables. Almost longingly as she bit the bottom corner of her lip. Trance coyly shrugged a shoulder while sounding just a little bit helpful. It was quick to recognize that this shinki wasn't really capable of disguising her emotions, and that she was easily drawn towards games of chance. ]

Maybe we can interact with the people enough to play and lure the ayakashi to us? If it's taking luck...

It seems like she's playing one such game, the simplest of them all: blackjack. And just as she's about to ask the dealer for another hit, you may just happen upon her. ] It-- this is not what it looks like! I am merely testing if the game has dubious outcomes. [ Having someone who really isn't interested in standing out try and devise a way to make someone or something else stand out is quite possibly doomed to failure. As it were, thus far all he's managed to do is have a stare-down with it. This is... really not working. ]

You're a quail, not a peacock, nobody's going to notice you because there's nothing worth noticing. You should just be grateful nobody's trying to eat you. And now I look like the crazy one because I'm talking to a bird.

[ The bird looks oddly dejected, but he's not entirely sure what to do about it. Quails are fairly drab birds, with nothing bright or flashy about them, so how is he supposed to make people take notice of it? This is not something he has experience with!

[Someone apparently believes in the direct approach. Dhurke seems utterly unfazed by the riders loudly circling him, though, grinning like a maniac as they close in. The leader jumps off, cracking his knuckles.]

Well, I've got bad news for you - because a dragon never yields.

[As those words leave his lips, Dhurke halts the man in his tracks with nothing more than an intimidating stare. The sudden dramatic billowing of his cape certainly doesn't hurt, either.]

It'll take more than words and a look to shut them up for longer than a night.

[The deep, impassive voice comes from the roof of a nearby building, yellow eyes and a red scarf standing out against a silhouette with a ragged, voluminous coat that nearly touches the ground. Without further comment, the figure leaps down, and one of the riders on the outside seems to squint for a moment before getting off his bike, confidence in his motions.

He doesn't get more than two steps towards the shadowed figure before there's a swift movement and a brief shout, and the unfortunate rider is hurled into his bike hard enough to knock it over and him senseless.

Stepping into the range of a street lamp - the reason for the pause before the rider getting up may be obvious, since Shun's clearly in his late teens and thus much younger than most assembled - Shun looks the rest of the group up and down with a distinct lack of any fear or intimidation in his face, before his gaze slips to Dhurke instead.]

You look like you have this decently in hand, but two of us makes for a shorter fight.

Riders: The Tale of the God who Silenced the Night

[So all she needs to do is get a bunch of noisy punks to tone down their motorcycles? No problem! How hard could it be? But before she can even open her mouth to submit her request, most of the Riders have already begun laughing her off. With her widdle little bow and cute bob hair cut, she's just the image of a polished little miss from a well-groomed background.

Now most of this is just some good-natured teasing; they're noisy, but they're not bad lads. Some of them even offer a ride home, if she isn't afraid of getting her dainty shoes scuffed and a bit of dirt on her dress.

Too bad Youmu is far from the dainty little Daddy's girl they're making her out to be. Her temper and smile had begun to strain under some of their comments, but the last straw comes when one of them warns her against carrying such a big sword around, what if she accidentally cuts herself? Here let him carry them for her--]

Get your hands off Roukanken!

[Whoops. There's a huge cloud of dust, some flashes of pink and green light, and when the suspiciously girly screams have faded and the dust has settled, Youmu's left in the centre breathing heavily, having completely a quarter of the motorbikes and sending some of the riders flying, lying knocked out on the ground but otherwise unharmed.

The other riders have already begun to slowly retreat, but it's too late.]

I'll show you what this little girl can do!!

[Within seconds what was supposed to be an easy task has turned into a complete mess, with crying men trying to run away from the "demon girl" that's chasing after the whole lot.

She's, umm, probably left a crater or two. And broke a light post. and probably caused more ruckus and noise than the riders have for the last month. Whoops.]

Slick Seven: The Tale of the God who Can't Kill Ayakashi because she's too darn prideful to admit her swords are useless against them

[Youmu had been affronted when someone told her that her swords wouldn't be able to destroy ayakashi. What sort of nonsense is that!?

So she's taken it upon herself to slay some ayakashi without any shinki, just to prove that Rokanken and Hakurouken are more than capable of taking up the job. She's slashed her way through Gensokyo, and even taken on a celestial being. Hunting down the ayakashi at the casino is gonna be a piece of cake!

So...denizens of The Far Shore will be treated to quite a light show. Flashes of green and pink and blue light up the sky like neon lights and will be the first hint that someone's doing some fighting in the area. But then they'll hear a distant road erupt from the direction of the casino, and pouring out from the windows is tons of purple flesh and bubbling yellow eyes. Not just one ayakashi, but tens to dozens of them, and all attracted but one god's shiny attempt to prove a point.

To her credit she's doing an amazing job of dodging all the attacks and dismembering each ayakashi that comes her way. But they just can't die, feeding on the despair and greed of the humans around them. And when the cut up bits of ayakashi merge with each other instead to form one freaking huge blob of an ayakashi hulk thing towering far over her...

...welp. No one's ever said that Youmu is a coward! With a loud battlecry she's charging right at that monstrosity, her swords raised high!! Humans begins to scream and panic when parts of the huge neon signboard above the roof gets completely sliced in half for no reason at all, and oh no, she's started a fire on the trees as well!! Someone stop her before she starts destroying the casino next!!]

Peanut Party: The Tale of The Humbled God performing Community Service

[What an eventful first week as a god. Destroying public and private property, putting humans in harm's way and drawing the attention of nearly every damn ayakashi in the area. Suffice to say, she's drawn the attention of nearly every god and shinki in Takamagahara...including some not-too-happy higher ups.

So that's why she's going around both the Near and Far Shore, wearing an embarrassing peanut costume and offering tasty peanut goods to everyone, looking decidedly grumpy and unhappy about the whole business. She has eight crates of peanut-related snack foods to go through!!

Which is why she's approaching you with what scant amount of professionalism she can muster.]

Excuse me. Would you like to sample some peanut butter cookies?

[ And here is her shinki, who as it were is not just any slender sword. No, she is a greatsword-- or rather, a sword-saw formed of shadows and darkness, and she's currently standing off to the side.

Really, this is all just typical for the horned woman. Destruction and chaos are simply a part of her everyday life as well. As for the few ayakashi that come her way, Saw manages to incapcitated them to a point with her sheer strength and might, although she, too, cannot rend one of the demons on her own. Yet luckily for her, most of the ayakashi are preoccupied with the green-clad girl. ] Have you had your fill yet, girl?

[ As usual, the voice doesn't come from her own mouth but through the mind. Her tone is hollow and resonant, but the usual disinterest is replaced with mild amusement, watching the light show erupt at the casino. ]
