TEST DRIVE # 09

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Old Officials

There's a business that is desperately wishing the older members of their workforce would bow out. They've been sitting on death's door for so long and are doing little to help the company. The younger managers only want to step up and take their place! Help convince these ancient businessmen to step down.

Peanut Party

A celebration for peanuts is sweeping through the city. Peanut butter, peanut cookies, even just plain peanuts are being sold, thrown, and praised all over. It's your job to help spread the peanut love, either by helping to make the tasty treats or by buying more peanuts from the next town over.

Quiet Quail

Oddly enough, a request has come in from a quail, of all creatures. It thinks very highly of itself and knows that it's super mega important, but it has such a hard time being anything but quiet. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to draw attention to this quail - make it stand out like not other quail has done before.

Roaring Riders

A rowdy motorcycle gang has been plaguing the streets for a few weeks. Every night, at midnight, they make their engines roar out in unison, waking everybody in town. The riders themselves are good guys, they just have this one nasty habit that they refuse to give up because it pays tribute to their patron god. Do you have the heart to get them to quiet down?

Slick Sevens

The newest tourist stop is a large casino. It's said that everyone who enters the casino has their luck stolen from them at the door. That might just be silly superstitions and bad gamblers talking, but there is definitely an ayakashi there who seems to feed on people's luck. Maybe that's what's causing everyone to lose so much.

[Sharak doesn't look much bothered by the sudden presence, so long as one doesn't pay attention to her elbow suddenly buried in Jae-ha's gut. Respect personal space, mister.]

Anyone going to a place like this expecting to leave richer than they arrived is either naive or a cheat. [Sighs and kindly removes her elbow to get out a cigarette.] But we should probably do something, I suppose.

Hgh—

[Ow. The moment her elbow is removed, he can hunch over a little and wrap his arms around his stomach. What a fierce woman... that's somehow even more attractive as a quality, isn't it?]

Everyone here is simply living their lives freely. Whatever their intentions, the outcome shouldn't be changed like this.

We should do something... Do you have a shinki with you? The most we can do on our own is weaken it.

[She just ignores Jae-ha's hunching over, since it definitely has nothing to do with her, and lights her cigarette.]

I didn't bring my shinki. [For Reasons which absolutely exist, but Jae-ha doesn't need to hear them.] Shouldn't there be some way to drive it away, without killing it?

So you are a god! You looked like a goddess, so I could only guess.

[Does he stop this ever? Probably not. It's ingrained for some reason... But this time there's a bit more distance between himself and her. Please don't elbow him.]

As a shinki, I could probably force it out using barriers... But that wouldn't solve the issue, would it? It would just go somewhere else.

[She doesn't dish out anymore Absolutely Necessary Violence because a) Jae-ha isn't wrong and b) he's clearly learned to be at least a little afraid so she can afford to let it slide.]

Isn't that just "living freely" as well? [BUT they can't let it start eating living humans anyway.] What would you suggest? I'm not calling my shinki here.

[For Reasons.]

That depends if you count the existence of an ayakashi as truly living.

[Jae-Ha is conflicted himself, so he really doesn't want to talk about that part. But he puts his hand over his chin, thinking.]

I suppose that for now, chasing it out would be the immediate solution. Even if a problem comes up later, it stops this for now.

[Oh, but wait a minute— now that they've both stood here for far too long, the ayakashi is beginning to show interest. It's definitely facing them and licking its... lips?]

I don't like half-hearted measures like that... [Though she was the one to suggest just driving it away to start with. Oh, well.

Except now they've got a fan.] ... It might be more "luring" than "chasing" it away, however.

Aren't you the one who suggested it?

[Ah, they really can't stand here and discuss it. It's diving at them, and Jae-Ha doesn't have enough self preservation to stop himself from grabbing Sharak's hand. Come on, they're running!!!]

Where shall we lure it?

You-!

[God damn it she is not some maiden in need of a rescue! So when Jae-ha starts to run, she yanks her hand free and grans on to his wrist instead, and pulls him in a different direction. Jae-ha's probably still faster than her, but at least he's not holding her hand anymore.

This confuses the ayakashi for about ten seconds, which should be enough for them to get a bit of a head start.] Far enough away that it can't find it's way back easily. We can use your borderlines to drive it off from there.

[Oh— well, now he's being yanked this way, and he can only blink in brief surprise before following along. Sure, sure, he'll go with this. A tough woman is always admirable.]

I should mention that I've only used my borderlines once or twice. Well, they should work well enough. Let's enjoy this exercise in the meantime.

[Enjoy, he says, as the ayakashi tails them and continues to draw closer...]

Either make yourself useful or stay out of the way. I can handle this by myself if I have to.

[Can she?? Sure, she's dealt with worse. She'd figure it out. She seems confident enough. Sharak pulls them into a sharp turn down a narrow lane, ayakashi still hot on their heels.]

I'm very useful!

[He defends this loudly.] You can't make any yourself, so you'd need my help. Just a touch from an ayakashi will leave you blighted. Tell me when to use it, and I'll do my best.

[See, he can coordinate and listen.]

Now, then.

[Sharak comes to a sudden halt as they leave the lane, turning back around sharply to face the approaching ayakashi. Suddenly there's a gun in her free hand and she fires three bullets that hit dead on their mark- not that she expects it to kill the ayakashi, but perhaps it will help slow it down.]

[The gunshots are a little startling, but after he'd seen it on her person, he'd kind of expected the noise at any given point. She was a little fierce... and Sanzo had already shown him how loud a gun can be.

Now, he pulls his own wrist back and forms his hands together to properly draw a borderline in front of them. The ayakashi is stunned enough from the bullets that it doesn't launch itself forward for a few seconds after that, and by the time it does it crashes straight into the barrier.]

[She's a little fierce... And keeping her gun aimed at the ayakashi.]

Can you pin it down?

With the borderlines, you mean?

[He assumes so, since touching it would mean blight, but— it doesn't seem too impossible.] I've never tried it before, but it's a little small, isn't it? Let's see what I can do.

[It's going to take a lot of releasing borderlines and putting them up again, but Jae-Ha is very fast and he goes for it. His borderlines are getting cheaper and cheaper, though, and at one point, he has to settle for just kicking the thing.

It crashes into the ground, and Jae-Ha drops after it to use one more borderline.]

[Sharak watches, keeping her gun trained on the ayakashi in case Jae-ha needs to back up. But he doesn't ask for help, so she leaves him to it, so long as it looks like he's managing- and manage he does. The last borderline gets the ayakashi right down the middle and pins it to the pavement.]

... So you can be useful. [Good job. So shinki can manage like this too, huh?]

[He manages, yes, but the stinging on his leg tells him that blight can pass through even clothing and can even touch his dragon leg. Good to know... It can be washed off easily enough later, so he ignores the stinging to watch the pinned ayakashi, instead.

He decides joking about this isn't worth the time waste, this time.]

The borderline won't stay forever. What were you thinking we should do now?

[She'd be concerned about his blight, but really it's Jae-ha's problem so long as he doesn't say anything or show any sign of struggling.

But ugh that's a good question.]

We've identified it and weakened it. We should leave and find a god who can finish it off with their shinki. [She'll probably call Gojyo or someone, as much as it annoys her to ask for help.]

[He doesn't tell people when he's hurt... He's just going to stay put and stare at this barrier and the ayakashi.]

I don't know that it could even last that long. [He steps forward just one step, raising a hand to his forehead as he thinks. Ugh—] Should I stay here?

[Glances over at Jae-ha at that suggestion. Is it her imagination, or is he favouring one leg over the other now?]

... No. I'll take care of it. [She puts her hands together in front of her chest and begins to chant.] On sonba nisonba un bazara…

[Beneath the ayakashi, a bunch of thick vines suddenly burst out of the ground and twist themselves around it fiercely, trapping it further. There, that should hold it for a while.]

What a pain in the ass.

[It's not her imagination. Even as he stands still, he puts all of his weight on the other leg for now, leaving the second just slightly bent at the knee as he watches. He's never seen anything like that before... How fascinating.]

That's a nice ability. [Shifting, he turns back to her.]

Well, it seems better like this. Should I leave the rest to you finding someone, then?
