Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:
1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

Old Officials
There's a business that is desperately wishing the older members of their workforce would bow out. They've been sitting on death's door for so long and are doing little to help the company. The younger managers only want to step up and take their place! Help convince these ancient businessmen to step down.
A celebration for peanuts is sweeping through the city. Peanut butter, peanut cookies, even just plain peanuts are being sold, thrown, and praised all over. It's your job to help spread the peanut love, either by helping to make the tasty treats or by buying more peanuts from the next town over.
Oddly enough, a request has come in from a quail, of all creatures. It thinks very highly of itself and knows that it's super mega important, but it has such a hard time being anything but quiet. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to draw attention to this quail - make it stand out like not other quail has done before.
A rowdy motorcycle gang has been plaguing the streets for a few weeks. Every night, at midnight, they make their engines roar out in unison, waking everybody in town. The riders themselves are good guys, they just have this one nasty habit that they refuse to give up because it pays tribute to their patron god. Do you have the heart to get them to quiet down?
The newest tourist stop is a large casino. It's said that everyone who enters the casino has their luck stolen from them at the door. That might just be silly superstitions and bad gamblers talking, but there is definitely an ayakashi there who seems to feed on people's luck. Maybe that's what's causing everyone to lose so much.

If you're uncertain about anything, feel free to check out the Premise, Rules, and FAQ posts. And don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have on the FAQ!
When and if you're ready to join the game, check out the Taken Characters before throwing in a Reserve and starting on your Application
Have fun!

I prefer card games, personally.
[He tends to overthink probability games. He'd probably just put something down on odds, and that's not very lucky at all. Nearly fifty fifty.]
I'm perfectly content to be the cheerleader in this case.

[ Trance, you two are here for a reason. Not just to have fun with gambling. But does it count as that when... The ball looks like it was going to bounce up and roll into another square, but hits the border pin enough to land right into 5.
That poor person running the table is going to have to call for more tokens at this rate. ]
Oh! I got it again!
[ If this doesn't attract a luck-hungry ayakashi, who knows what will. ]

[Lord, twice in a row? The odds of that are so astronomical as to be nigh impossible.
The employee at the table certainly looks shocked. And perhaps a little suspicious, like they're cheating. Julian just looks sheepish and shrugs.]
What luck!

[ It's like she's a kid going through a candy factory tour, and there's samples through each section. With the luck comment, Trance looked back and saw the employee's expression. She's not sure why, but they definitely seemed a little upset. Which made her feel a little bit bad, but maybe she could fix that. So she copies Julian's expression ]
What else could it be but luck, right?
[ But just wait when she collects the winnings and puts another bet on the table, right at 8. Three times makes for a pattern and a very delicious meal for an ayakashi. ]

Julian has stayed well away from the table--some other employees have come, probably to look it over and keep an eye on them to ensure they weren't cheating. But cheating at roulette...well, he's sure it's possible, Quark has probably figured a way, but they aren't. He thinks.
Honestly, he's not sure what Trance is doing, but this is beyond the pale.]
Astoundingly good luck, but luck nonetheless.
[He's keeping an eye out for the ayakashi--the other gamblers might also be working to attract it with their anger at the woman easily winning where they've been wasting all their money.]
no subject
Sure, if that's what you want. I don't have to stop though, do I?
[ In the meantime, there's definitely a stench or wisp that had definitely come from the back 'employees only' area. The visuals are far easier to spot than the ayakashi itself. Which, judging by the trail's movements, is slinking from one patron to the next towards the roulette table.
And judging by Trance's hop of delight and everyone else's groans and mutterings, the ball landed right into 30. If they weren't happy before, they really weren't now. ]

The small hairs on the back of Julian's neck raise--he can feel something approaching, something sinister.]
Trance, it's coming.

[ Which means it was serious time, and that she'd have to stop playing this wonderful game.
Of course a game is wonderful when you keep winning at it, though.Which meant getting the winnings gathered back up into her bag, quickly addressing the poor employee. ]It was a lot of fun playing with everyone, but I have to stop and return to work. Hopefully things should be getting better!
[ Securing her bag, Trance returns to Julian's side to look back around the area. The hungry ayakashi kept getting closer, swirling by people's feet or around their arms to grab onto the smallest morsels before reaching the big meal. As she currently was, Trance was more prone to hiding behind people than fighting, but she had enough sense of duty to stay near for when she was to be called. It didn't change that this was still kinda scary, though. ]
Ready when you need me. I think.
[ She's not the most confident when it comes to fights. More afraid than anything else, as if it'd be her fault if something went wrong. ]

We'll be fine.
[Nevermind that he really hasn't done this before. Also nevermind that the very idea of it has made him uncomfortable--he can understand that these ayakashi, corrupted spirits, hurt people and need to be dealt with. But using another person as a weapon to do so...]
Let's get it outside. It's got us in its sights now, it's going to follow us.
[He takes Trance's hand before he starts for the door, weaving through the crowd.]
I'm SO sorry. Was working at NYCC!
It's when she glances back and sees the smokey apparition follow, seeming to take a bird-like shape, that the golden girl let out a quivering sound before tightening her hold on Julian's hand. There may be a bit of heat along with her nails digging in.]
Outside it is!
[ In fact, she starts walking faster as if to keep up with the man and gently guide them through the crowd. ]
That is a pretty fantastic reason to be afk though!
Once we take care of this, we can go back inside and make an afternoon of it.
[He knows, theoretically, what they have to do. He knows he has to use Trance in her vessel form to do it, grating as the idea is. Best to get it over with, then, as soon as possible. Once they're outside and away from those who might get caught in the crossfire, he'll use her name.]
No way I was gonna just drop this, either!
That'd be nice, if the people inside didn't mind. They weren't very happy.
[ She's ridiculously naive, but not blind. The employees were clearly upset by someone consistently winning the spinning ball game.
Incapable of not looking back, Trance does so just in time to see the ayakashi rising up for a swoop on the god and very lucky shinki. So what happens? Trance shrieks, swings over to the other side of Julian and hides behind him. ]
/chinhands I'm glad you're having fun
[Honestly, it is likely that the two of them would be banned. Possibly a game of cards back at the temple is in order then.
The ayakashi attacking cuts that train of thought right off, though, replacing it with not very polite cursing. They do really need to work on her confidence, apparently. This sort of thing isn't something Julian can do on his own, despite what they've practiced.
He calls her vessel name while bracing himself to take a strike from the spirit--it will blight him, he knows, but he doesn't want Trance to take that blow.
Mostly because he's a self-sacrificing idiot.]no subject
But yes, it always seems that Trance does relatively well. She clearly had the power for it, just by having first arrived as a small sun. However the old girl was just terrified when it came to violence and has remained one of the more difficult things for them to overcome. Even in practices, she hid away.
Still, Trance looked up to see the attack coming down just as her vessel name was taken. Her entire form lit up into a bright golden light, reshaping into something almost like a mace that appeared where it belonged; In Julian's hands. ]
Watch out- You need to duck down!
[ It was probably the power that came with the vessel that was the biggest doozy. While taking a shape that could be used for protection, she seemed to have a better understanding of what actions should be taken. It certainly seemed like the swooping ayakashi was going for where Julian's head was at the current moment. ]

He twists away from the attack, under it--thankful, for once, for his enhanced reaction times. It means that he does evade the attack. He feels the displacement of air from it, but he doesn't take a blow.
The thing has claws, though. Cringing a bit, internally, he uses Trance's form to block them from trying to gut him.]
Let's get this over with, shall we?
[He really doesn't enjoy wielding Trance like a weapon, even if that was the entire point of this exercise and doing otherwise would leave this thing to attack more people.]
no subject
There were ways to draw boundaries too, but she needed practice to make sure they worked properly. Sometimes there was just radiation. ]
Count 2 beats and move to the left. It'll go by, and you can turn around. Step back and you'll have enough of an opening to finish the job.
[ Hopefully those were the best actions, but it didn't seem to lead to any injuries on Julian's part, so Trance didn't look past that probability. ]
no subject
He can calculate probabilities all day, but Trance's abilities go beyond that--she'd tried to explain it to him once, and it was so far beyond his own understanding that it was amazing.]
Thank you.
[He says, cheerfully enough--and then he does exactly as she says, striking the dark spirit and rending it. After a few moments to make sure nothing else is going to make itself known--]
Are you alright?
no subject
Perfectly fine. Was there anything else to the prayer?
[ For some reason, it felt like there was more to this. The prayer only involved a luck stealing ayakashi though, right? It nagged at her just enough to wonder. ]
