TEST DRIVE # 26



Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters!
Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Volatile Vagrant

Ayakashi generally have a particular method by which to hurt humans. But an ayakashi has appeared that seems to be completely random in its methods, and anyone merely being near it becomes a target of its malevolence in a variety of ways. Dispatch this vagrant ayakashi before it harms far too many people.

Warm Wanderlust

Hitchhiking in Japan is rare. A friendly but lost-looking foreigner on the side of the road will attract fascination, concern and compassion. But a Japanese person doing the same likely won’t attract the same positive attention. Yet here is one Japanese person praying for a way to experience the adventure of the hitchhike. What to do for your follower? Well, going as a group of three sounds good, doesn’t it? Just be sure to attract sufficient attention to yourselves so that the drivers will properly notice you!

X-Games X-out


The X-Games, popular overseas, has suddenly become a hot topic with Japanese competitors taking top spots in skateboarding events. Burning to follow in their wake, young teens have taken to the streets, parks and basically anywhere with a strip of pavement to hone their skateboarding skills (which may or may not exist in the first place). While it’s good to see kids getting away from the computer screen, they’re also becoming a public nuisance: damaging handrails, narrowly missing pedestrians, and making noise right up to sunset. Answer the prayers of the kids yearning for glory? Answer the prayers of those wishing for peace in their neighbourhoods again? (...What’s a ‘skateboard’ anyway?)


Youthful Yente

An enthusiastic grade-schooler has started a new career helping people find love! She's hooked up teachers, classmates' parents, even random strangers… but it seems like all the matches she's trying to make this month have gone horribly wrong! Is she being stalked by an ayakashi or is this just bad luck? Either way, she needs help getting her mojo back.


Zodiac Zenith

In the trendy Ginza area, a mall has set up an elaborate indoor display of lights set to represent the real night sky. The key feature is the evening illumination show, where the various zodiac constellations are lit up to music. Strangely, there are growing rumours that those who view the show become even more focused on their horoscopes (much to the benefit of local fortune tellers). It’s even said that people’s personalities shift to become more stereotypical to their respective signs. Take in the show for yourself and see what happens?

[Go to Nara! Enjoy the history and the scenery! Feed deer! With teleporting between shrines a breeze for gods, why not go out of Tokyo for an easy day trip? The weather was nice, surprisingly warm even for the time of year, and the leaves were beginning to show their fall colors. A nice calming day for a god and his shinki.

But the brochure might have undersold the aggression of the deer of Nara park. With animals always aware of the denizens of the Far Shore, it did not take long for the deer to hone in on Ginia and her stack of deer crackers. And so, surrounded by eight aggressive deer nibbling on her clothes and butting her hands for more crackers, Ginia turns to Erwin for help.]

[ Nara is beautiful, and clearly rich in history. Erwin has been to several places in Japan so far with an extensive historical background stretching back quite literally thousands of years, and he finds it as humbling as he does fascinating. Coming from a society where any history before the last century was simply erased, it's incredible to see and touch and feel places so ancient.

It's peaceful there, too--for the most part. Erwin has become used to going unnoticed on the Near Shore, but the deer clearly have other plans. Not that he minds. Watching Ginia be swarmed is quite possibly the best thing he's seen all day, which is saying something. He lets her suffer--as much as one can suffer, anyway, when surrounded by cute animals--for his entertainment for a moment longer before stepping in, pushing his way between two of the deer to stand beside her. ]

I'll take a few of those.

[ The smile on his lips is reflected in the warm of his voice, and he extends his hand to her palm up. ]

[They are not cute, they are fearsome and nibbling and their noses are wet and they're slobbering over her coat. While not afraid--especially considering how she still towers over even the tallest deer in the herd--she's definitely flustered and a bit overwhelmed, especially when a persistent deer nibbles on the hem of her jacket again. She'll laugh at the memory later, but for now, well, she definitely pouts at Erwin when he finally comes to her rescue.

She shoves a handful of wheat crackers into his hand, breaking the remaining in half to distribute to the deer. With their attention divided between the two, they become a bit more manageable, a few even wandering off to harass tourists with more food. Is that a small child with a hot sweet potato? It certainly is. Deer sure love easy prey.]

You're the worst.

[She signs when she has a moment, still pouting a little, but it's beginning to turn into a smile.]

You're buying lunch today. I want steak, the expensive kind.

[ They are being pretty aggressive, aren't they? Divide and conquer, then. At first it's a bit of a frenzy, half of the deer zeroing in on this second human with more food. They nibble at his fingers and lip at his palm as they search for more even when he's run out. It rather reminds him of hand-feeding his horse, and that's enough to make him feel fond.

He sees that smile, Ginia. Nara hadn't been his idea, had it? ]

Deer steak, perhaps? I'm sure there's plenty to be had around here.

[ Slightly morbid dad jokes are Erwin's specialty. ]

[Ginia huffs at the suggestion. Weren't deer once a sacred animal, with harming one punishable by death? Even if laws were laxer these days, it was doubtful restaurants were keen to serve their city's mascot. Besides, her stomach was set on something fancier. Erwin doesn't mind teleporting to different cities to indulge his shinki, right?]

Kobe. We're going to Kobe when we're done here.

[Save for a persistent pair that continue to hound them, most of the deer disperse in favor of other tourists. Ginia lightly loops a hand back around Erwin's arm, expression back to a calm smile. Nara was her idea, but it was in service of his interests. Still, she can't deny she's enjoying being here, with him.]
