Test Drive #26

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:
1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!
Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.
Ayakashi generally have a particular method by which to hurt humans. But an ayakashi has appeared that seems to be completely random in its methods, and anyone merely being near it becomes a target of its malevolence in a variety of ways. Dispatch this vagrant ayakashi before it harms far too many people.
Hitchhiking in Japan is rare. A friendly but lost-looking foreigner on the side of the road will attract fascination, concern and compassion. But a Japanese person doing the same likely won’t attract the same positive attention. Yet here is one Japanese person praying for a way to experience the adventure of the hitchhike. What to do for your follower? Well, going as a group of three sounds good, doesn’t it? Just be sure to attract sufficient attention to yourselves so that the drivers will properly notice you!
The X-Games, popular overseas, has suddenly become a hot topic with Japanese competitors taking top spots in skateboarding events. Burning to follow in their wake, young teens have taken to the streets, parks and basically anywhere with a strip of pavement to hone their skateboarding skills (which may or may not exist in the first place). While it’s good to see kids getting away from the computer screen, they’re also becoming a public nuisance: damaging handrails, narrowly missing pedestrians, and making noise right up to sunset. Answer the prayers of the kids yearning for glory? Answer the prayers of those wishing for peace in their neighbourhoods again? (...What’s a ‘skateboard’ anyway?)
An enthusiastic grade-schooler has started a new career helping people find love! She's hooked up teachers, classmates' parents, even random strangers… but it seems like all the matches she's trying to make this month have gone horribly wrong! Is she being stalked by an ayakashi or is this just bad luck? Either way, she needs help getting her mojo back.
In the trendy Ginza area, a mall has set up an elaborate indoor display of lights set to represent the real night sky. The key feature is the evening illumination show, where the various zodiac constellations are lit up to music. Strangely, there are growing rumours that those who view the show become even more focused on their horoscopes (much to the benefit of local fortune tellers). It’s even said that people’s personalities shift to become more stereotypical to their respective signs. Take in the show for yourself and see what happens?

If you're uncertain about anything, feel free to check out the Premise, Rules, and FAQ posts. And don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have on the FAQ!

Have fun!

[ The desire to travel, to see more of the world, is an aspiration Erwin can identify with. While he can't quite understand the need to travel cross-country with strangers by car, given that the risk seems to outweigh the novelty, he has no right to pass judgement on the dreams of others. Even if he still thinks that making him of all people a god is an unfunny joke, he's done his utmost to fulfill his role. If there are people looking to him for help and guidance, the least he can do is try to live up to their expectations.
Which is how he ended up standing on a street corner around mid-morning. Ordinarily Erwin would be rather attention-grabbing all on his own, being tall and broad and blonde--practically the textbook conspicuous western foreigner. His missing right arm, too, would normally draw notice. But the veil of relative anonymity granted to those of the far shore makes it more difficult even for him. It seems people aren't taking much notice of his enthusiastic follower, either, despite the way he's practically leaning into the road with his thumb out.
A quick internet search on his phone--still a marvel, so much information available with minimum effort--brings up a few suggestions. He thumbs through them, then leans down to show his companion the screen. ]
Perhaps we should try a street where the cars aren't moving quite so fast.
[ As it is they're practically a blur, and there's not much space for one to pull over even if they wanted to. ]

[ Love and romance are very much not Erwin's area of expertise. He rarely receives prayers on the subject, thankfully, and when he does he most often passes them off to someone more suitable. This case, however, doesn't necessitate dealing directly with messy personal feelings--and if he's being honest, the idea of a child matchmaker is charming. He may not have a clue about matters of the heart, but her recommendations appear to have worked out more often than not. Until recently, that is.
Ueno Park, serene pathways carpeted with beautiful golden maple leaves this time of year, is the perfect place for a romantic first meeting, isn't it? It's a beautiful weekend afternoon and couples stroll past trees and shrines contentedly, finding some respite amidst the bustle of Tokyo. ]
Here he is.
[ The girl, Kiyomi, is clearly a bit nervous as she leads a woman by the hand toward where her perspective partner waits by a nearby torii gate. ]
W-well--I hope you enjoy your date! Please let me know how it goes!
[ Kiyomi waves cheerfully as the two of them depart, but when she turns to find a seat on a nearby bench, she looks dejected. Her former confidence has been shaken by bad breakups and dates gone wrong over the past month. There is some obvious negative energy surrounding her, but is it enough to call it an ayakashi? ]
Should we talk to her?
[ Standing side by side, the two of you may as well be another couple in the park today. Why not pull the old fake dating ruse in order to get to the bottom of this? ]

[ Several shopping trips to Ginza have lent Erwin a sort of familiarity with the area--and he had needed to pick up a new shirt or two. Besides, he's always loved the stars, has spent years studying and mapping them in order to chart courses for expeditions. He would want to see the illumination show regardless of the rumors surrounding it. ]
I admit, I'm not at all familiar with the zodiac. I wouldn't know how to recognize these traits even if people are exhibiting them.
[ It's clear he's still more excited about the show itself, a sparkle in his eye and an almost boyish giddiness about him that's at odds with his age and his typical austerity. It's easy to tell when Erwin finds something genuinely interesting. ]

Or go shopping. Or get to the bottom of this zodiac mystery. Either or, things are flexible. He stands next to Erwin, arms crossed over his chest. Constellations are good and all, light shows are great, but he's always been skeptical when it comes to horoscopes. Still, Erwin's giddiness is charming and he looks over with a grin.]
Well, I'm a scorpio. Resourceful, brave, passionate, mysterious. [He grins and winks.] What's your birthday? I'll look up your sign.
no subject
And while he really doesn't know anything about scorpios--or any other sign--he can't help a laugh at that description and the accompanying wink. ]
I wonder if mine will suit me so well. [ Do Blanc's even suit him?? Erwin seems to think so. ] I was born October 14th.
[ Of course he's a libra. ]
no subject
[Blanc lightly hums as he looks up Erwin's zodiac sign, laughing suddenly. Libra. Of course he's a libra. He's grinning as he begins to read from the website.]
Libra, the balance scales. Your strengths are you're cooperative, diplomatic, gracious, and fair-minded, social. Your weaknesses are you're indecisive, avoids confrontations, will carry a grudge, and self-pity. Note to self, stay on your good side. Hmm... people born under the sign of Libra are peaceful, fair, and they hate being alone... individuals are fascinated by balance and symmetry, they are in a constant chase for justice and equality... this is someone ready to do nearly anything to avoid conflict, keeping the peace whenever possible. Oh, here we go, here's the fun stuff. Libras are great lovers but also fond of expensive, material things. Their lives need to be enriched by music, art, and beautiful places they get a chance to visit.
Also your horoscope for today says, "Some things from the past need to be reexamined and finally set free. It won’t be easy to adapt to changes made to your world and you need some help along the way."
[Blanc scoffs as he looks up from his phone, arm falling to his side. He crosses his arms and sizes Erwin up.]
...Look, from what I know of you, it fits. But make broad enough statements and apply it to a group of any people and something is going to stick.
no subject
More than anything else, though, it's that horoscope which makes him pause most. On the surface it does seem to be speaking directly to him. There's plenty regarding his past that he hasn't wanted to reexamine, and he certainly has needed--and will continue to need--help adapting to his new life here. But considered more closely, it's a broad enough statement that it could be applied to nearly anyone's life. ]
Of course. Any number of people could identify with that description, or benefit from the same advice, regardless of when they were born. But it's all for fun, isn't it? Do many people actually take it seriously?
[ If the rumors about this show turn out to be true, then perhaps they actually do. ]
no subject
He shakes his head and chuckles.]
You know, it's real funny. If this was happening back home, I could get my legal team looking into things. Bury all the merchants in paperwork and licensing as we do background checks and look for scam artists. Right now? [He laughs again and shrugs.] Hope it's not ayakashi-related because my shinki is shopping on the other side of town. I could flip a few tables though, that's fitting for a war god, right?

But the brochure might have undersold the aggression of the deer of Nara park. With animals always aware of the denizens of the Far Shore, it did not take long for the deer to hone in on Ginia and her stack of deer crackers. And so, surrounded by eight aggressive deer nibbling on her clothes and butting her hands for more crackers, Ginia turns to Erwin for help.]
no subject
It's peaceful there, too--for the most part. Erwin has become used to going unnoticed on the Near Shore, but the deer clearly have other plans. Not that he minds. Watching Ginia be swarmed is quite possibly the best thing he's seen all day, which is saying something. He lets her suffer--as much as one can suffer, anyway, when surrounded by cute animals--for his entertainment for a moment longer before stepping in, pushing his way between two of the deer to stand beside her. ]
I'll take a few of those.
[ The smile on his lips is reflected in the warm of his voice, and he extends his hand to her palm up. ]
no subject
She shoves a handful of wheat crackers into his hand, breaking the remaining in half to distribute to the deer. With their attention divided between the two, they become a bit more manageable, a few even wandering off to harass tourists with more food. Is that a small child with a hot sweet potato? It certainly is. Deer sure love easy prey.]
You're the worst.
[She signs when she has a moment, still pouting a little, but it's beginning to turn into a smile.]
You're buying lunch today. I want steak, the expensive kind.
no subject
He sees that smile, Ginia. Nara hadn't been his idea, had it? ]
Deer steak, perhaps? I'm sure there's plenty to be had around here.
[ Slightly morbid dad jokes are Erwin's specialty. ]
no subject
Kobe. We're going to Kobe when we're done here.
[Save for a persistent pair that continue to hound them, most of the deer disperse in favor of other tourists. Ginia lightly loops a hand back around Erwin's arm, expression back to a calm smile. Nara was her idea, but it was in service of his interests. Still, she can't deny she's enjoying being here, with him.]
Onto one more historical site?
youthful yente
He considers the couple a moment before looking at the girl. A natural matchmaker who hasn't had a winning streak in a while. Now there's something he hadn't expected. The reaper pulls himself from the tree he's settled against, fixing his jacket back over his shoulder. ]
Best we should. Could go either way, I'd wager. Either an ayakashi's causing the bad matches or s'just a bad streak'n her negativity's set to bring one to her.
[ That's what they feed off, after all. ]
Come along then... Erwin, was it? First time on the job?
