Test Drive #20

TEST DRIVE # 20

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Rope bridge Rumble

An adventure park that features several scary-exciting climbs and crossings between trees using only ropes has a huge problem. The ropes are getting unexpectedly tangled up. Even worse, it sometimes happens when a customer is trying to make a crossing, tripping them up in the midst of their course! While the safety ropes have been doing their job at keeping customers uninjured, the employees are fervently praying that whatever is doing this will go away, before something worse happens.

Steady Shave

It's the height of summer, and even men that treasure their beards, mustaches and sideburns dearly are driven to get it shaved off in the name of heat reduction. Small barbershops are being overrun with customers who want it all shaved off- some even going so far as to want their head shaved bare.
Answer the barber's pleas for a couple extra hands. May they be steady.

Toil and Trouble

A performance of Macbeth is being haunted by an ayakashi causing bad luck. Props getting misplaced or needing repairs, color gels for the lights getting torn, the microphones keep kicking up feedback- The customary wish of 'break a leg' feels dangerously close to becoming real. Rescue the Scottish Play from its curse before the curtain rises!

Ubiquitous U-turns

Elementary school children go home in groups for safety. However that measure isn't helping against some children getting home very late. And none of the kids can bring themselves to say why they end up taking so many wrong turns on the way. Take up a traffic flag and your best teacher voice, and help the children find their proper way home, keeping an eye out for anything - mundane or supernatural - that might be leading the kids astray.

Violet Veranda

Cheerful violets grew unusually well this year on the college dorm veranda, to the point where the whole perimeter of the veranda is full of containers holding them. But now the flowers are nearing the end of their life, and something strange is happening to the students at the same time. As the flowers wilt and fade, so does the energy of the students living in the dorm. While it would normally be impossible to draw a connection between the two, residents of the Far Shore can see the truth- tiny ladybug-like energy-hungry ayakashi are moving from flowers to students. Take care of this however you can before the last petal falls!

Ubiquitous U-turns

[Alan isn't even going to hide his delight at being able to help children. The smile on his face is huge and those green eyes bright. In the interest of blending in he's dressed in jeans, a button down shirt with a sweater vest and over that a bright yellow and orange safety vest. He's bringing his fingers to his mouth and letting out a sharp whistle to get the kids attention.]

Alright, kiddos! You can call me Mister Alan. I'll be seeing to it you all get home safely. Everyone form a neat little line and take hold of the rope. Then you're going to follow after me. Don't worry you won't get lost with me to guide you.

[That "rope" isn't quiet a rope. It's a twist of vines that have weaved their way from Alan before being gripped by little hands and in turn gripping them in return. And they're off looking very much a mama duck and her ducklings.]

Violet Veranda

[If anyone knows Alan they would know he would be drawn to this for two reasons - children and flowers. So it's no surprise that the god is kneeling near the flower bed looking it over with a critical eye behind his glasses.]

There you are. You nasty, annoying little buggers certainly like to go everywhere, don't you?

[It's a pity that no one is here to appreciate his humor - or so he thinks. Standing, he's brushing dirt from his slacks.] But this just won't do.

[ William may not have reacted to Alan's little pun verbally, but by this point, all of his coworkers can probably just sense when their boss is silently shaking his head behind them. ]

[There's that odd yet familiar feeling and he's glancing over his shoulder before laughing softly to himself.]

Senior Spears, are you here because of the ayakashi as well?

[Of course he is, Alan knows this. But respectful, polite small talk has always been his go to when it came to William.]

[ And taking up the very end of that rope is a grown man in a trench coat. Stubbly chin, tie askew, looking very serious about the venture ahead. Quietly staring ahead, he's seemingly oblivious to the stares of the small children in front of him.

Are you a' English teacher?, one blurts out, nearly stumbling because she hasn't been watching her feet.

Nu-uh, he's gotta be someone's dad, a boy replies needlessly loud, sticking a finger into his nose for a thoughtless scratch. ]

You shouldn't do that.

[ Finally, Castiel's eyes shift - to the little boy, whose finger is wedged inside his nostril. ]

Your hands harbor up to 150 difference species of bacteria, and there are five arteries within your nasal cavity, of which could then carry them through your blood steam and up to your brain.

[ He can't help but chuckle at the pun, stopping and stepping off his scythe. ]

Could use a shinki that takes the form a trowel now, eh? Can't do bugger all with our scythes... apropos as they are.

[ His would totally mutilate the flowers... ]

[He's know that sound anyplace and he's not even remotely surprised to find Ronald near by. They always have each others back it's nice to see that hasn't changed.]

I certainly could.

[He gives an amused laugh before his small smile falls. Nope. Just nope. It's time for a lecture but this is Ronnie so he keeps it gentle.]

It's not the flowers fault these little pests are drawn to them. You don't destroy what is good simply because it is touched by what is corrupt.

[Castiel is perhaps the best Shinki Alan could have asked for. Oh certainly he's a bit odd but it is in an endearing way. A way that makes Alan want to watch over him as best he can and take care of him. Similar to how he feels about Ronald. He's chuckling softly at the children's comments - even if that one about being someone's dad sends a faint pang of longing through his chest; oh how he would love that - before giving a little shake of his head.]

I suppose you could consider me both. After all I do have a family to look after and I do teach things they need to know.

[Hearing Castiel he glances back, only to snort and huff out a breathless laugh.]

He is right you shouldn't. It's rude and there are germs that could make you sick. However, - [He pauses adjusting his glasses.] We needn't terrify our charges, Castiel. They're just little ones after all.

[Though Alan's definition of little ones has shifted and includes Ronald and Cas so...]

[ To Alan's scolding, however gentle, Castiel will lower his gaze repentantly. ]

Yes. My apologies.

[ There's something that catches his eye, then - and he can't help but look, curiously.

It's the little boy, and he's turned to smugly stick his tongue out at the shinki with a, Nyaaah!

Well, he's never seen that gesture before. A confounded blink leads to a tilt of the head, eyes squinted and lips apart with question.

Little shit. ]

[Cas is a good boy. Alan knows this. Also the irony of him considering Castiel a little one and a boy isn't lost on him since he's knows with certainly that Castiel is older than him. No older than death or gods but older than Alan himself absolutely. Therefore it easily falls from his lips; those soft words of forgiveness.]

It's fine I know you didn't mean anything bad by it. You're not a mean or cruel person.

[A soft click of his tongue comes after that tongue gets stuck out then a gentle tut like any parent would give. He's the mom-dad.. person he knows without knowing exactly.]

How disappointingly rude, young man. You really should mind your manners, my dear boy.

A. Rope Bridge Rumble

[ Alibaba is not scared of heights. At least, he's pretty sure he's not. But this challenge would be enough to make anyone question that. He's carefully balanced on one of ropes that make up the bridge, trying to work his way out to where some unfortunate adventurer has gotten himself tangled and fallen, now hanging on for dear life above a frankly worrying height. ]

[ He's grumbling under his breath, but it doesn't stop him from taking another step out to the next rope to try and save the guy anyway. Which is when the whole bridge gives a violent shake and he finds himself gripping the handholds in a suddenly white-knuckled grip. ]

B. Toil and Trouble

[ He's perched backstage with a cart of costumes beside him and brandishing a fake sword with a mixture of curiosity and boredom. Luckily nothing too dangerous has happened - yet - but he's still here on standby just in case. ]

C. Violet Veranda

[ Alibaba is crouched by the flowerbed, staring at the ladybugs in surprise. Some of them are just normal bugs climbing the leaves and petals, but he can tell which ones are not what they seem, which makes sure he keeps his hands to himself instead of accidentally making contact with any of them. ]

D. Wildcard

[It took awhile for Suou to find his way to the Rope bridge. The adventure park was large and how distracting no matter what direction he took. Joyous screams and laughter were making him feel a bit on edge as he couldn't help but stop and make sure everything was alright.

He comes to a stop at the Rope Bridge, staring up at Alibaba and the poor guy. Isn't he sort of making things worse? It's really hard to tell who is in need of saving. The whole thing looks weird. Should he help or just wait until Alibaba falls?]

....Are you okay?

I. - Rope Bridge Rumble

[Goggles resting atop her head were pulled down and secured in place. She looked up; even from her position on the ground below, she could see the target clearly. A singular, squirming silhouette amidst an increasing tangle of rope, branches, twigs, and leaves, the latter of which continued to flutter and fall from above, only to end up trapped like a fly in a web.]

[Waves of panic broadcasted, indicating a sense of urgency. Although there was little in the way of danger--she'd already checked the safety nets below, and was satisfied with the results--she felt sympathy for the poor soul and hastened her movements accordingly.]

[One of the higher branches looked sturdy enough. She swung the weighted cord in her hand around several times, building up a solid momentum, before letting go. As always, her aim was perfect; it not only flew up to just the right height, but looped over the branch and began to fall back down on its other side in a single, smooth motion. From there, she allowed the rope to be pulled, guiding it with her gloved hands, until the weight had returned to her. It took less than ten seconds from there to secure the harness and pulley system, and with a few sharp pulls, she slowly began to rise into the air.]

Try to hold still! [She called up in a strong, but reassuring tone.] I'm on my way. We'll get you out of there in no time.

II. - Ubiquitous U-turns

[She'd seen the children walking home from school more than once before, sometimes even pausing in her routine to stare after those precious smiles. Reveling in the sense of innocence and wonder they still carried. Sometimes, one of the younger ones would notice her. And wave. She always waved back.]

[Today, however, those waves would come from a much closer proximity. The smiles were still there, though dimmer than usual. Fear overshadowed their eyes, and though her face was somewhat familiar, she couldn't help notice the way some of the smallest ones clung to their larger friends. Perhaps a bit of an overreaction to the mere idea of getting lost or delayed along the way...but she knew that, in their minds, the lack of certainty over what was to come could very well stir up feelings of anxiety.]

[Understanding the reason for their recoil, she purposely knelt down to better meet them at eye level, lightly tilting her head to one side and offering a smile of her own.]

I know this all seems really scary right now. It's alright to be scared sometimes. What's important is that you don't let being scared stop you.

We'll get you all home safely today. I promise.

III. - Wildcard!

[ Look, he was almost there and there was no way he was getting the guy untangled from the ground, what did he look like?

He doesn't take his eyes off the ropes he's trying to maneuver at the sound of Suou's voice, but there is a brief flicker of relief on his face as he makes a careful step closer to the guy and crouches down, balancing carefully on one strand of rope.

He's got this. He's totally got this. ]

Sure. This is easy. I'll have him out of this in no time.

[ See? Totally convincing. ]

[Convincing, right....

Suou doesn't let his skepticism show but it's obvious he doesn't really believe Alibaba's words. He takes a few steps closer, looking up at the shinki and the person he's trying to help. Honestly it's hard to tell if Alibaba is trying to save someone or messing around. It all seems...like a lot of effort when there's an easier solution.]

Cutting the rope would be faster.

[ He resists the urge to roll his eyes. Although he does lean over slightly in order to give the other shinki a pointed Look. ]

I couldn't cut the ropes and catch him when he dropped. So make yourself useful and do the second part, would you?

[ Because at least his dagger is within easy reach in the front of his robes. Pulling it out, he deftly starts cutting through the tangle of ropes still keeping the man caught in the air - if barely. ]

The play is named after him.

[ So, yes. He would be important. ]

...

[If it wasn't for the person that needed saving, Suou would have just went on watching or walked off. But it's not the guy's fault if Alibaba has an attitude.

With a frown, Suou moves closer and stops just under the pair. He holds his arms out, ready to catch the man when he drops. It's easy despite Suou not looking that strong, the guy's weight is next to nothing for him. But he is quick to set the man down upon confirming he's alright and glances back up curiously to Alibaba.]

Rope Bridge Rumble
Aaahh! Don't worry, I'll get you down--!

[ ... Chika clearly did not think this through very well, because she sort of launches herself toward the person. Except she lands funny, one foot on one of the ropes and the other on the wooden platform. ]

Ahh, oh no!!

[ Someone please help this child, because she can't help herself. Sure enough, the poor lady on the course looks completely baffled, and a little concerned. She reaches out to Chika-- ]

N-no, no, conserve your energy, I can get this--!!

Toil and Trouble
[ Trouble at a performance?! That's no good. Chika heads out immediately to the theater, and yes, something is amiss. She's got a detective's hat on her head, and she crosses her arms as she surveys the area. ]

Hmmmm... yes, this is fishy! And not even a little okay! Someone's messing with the arts and must be stopped...! Starting... [ she points at... you?! ] You there! I'd like to ask you some questions!

Rope Bridge Rumble
Okay well for starters it seems kind of weird that the park wouldn't close the attraction while they figure out what's up, but at least they aren't just pretending like it isn't a problem at all. That's... better than nothing, but 'nothing' is a ridiculously low bar to be setting.

Trying to figure out what all's going on from the ground is one option, but it'd be easier to get a real feel for the situation if he's right up there on it, so up he goes. Carefully, he makes his way across the bridge, keeping a sharp eye out for any odd tangles or unnatural movement around him.

Ubiquitous U-Turns
It's not the kind of task that Yusei really thinks of himself as 'made for', but despite his typically stern and stoic expression, he does have a way with children. Guiding them and keeping them together is simple enough of a task, but it is clear that some of them are wandering off with little to no reason. Hm...

"Stay in line!"

The call isn't harsh, but definitely loud enough to not be ignored, and sends a couple of startled children scurrying back toward their group. When he glances back to where they were headed toward, however, he can't find anything at all.

So, to his partner, he asks, "Did you see anything?"

[Bruno has been curiously trying to figure out what might be causing some of the tangles. He's witnessed a couple up close and they're definitely strange. But he's been trying to steer people clear of the attraction in the midst of his research.

So he suddenly reaches out and grabs Yusei's arm before he can make his way onto the ropes.]

Oh hey, hold on! You probably don't wanna go out there...

[It's the action of being grabbed like that that's more likely to send him toppling than any carefully watched out for tangle, gosh! His reflexes are good enough that he keeps his balance at least, and he's all ready to bark back a sharp, 'I've got it under control,' or 'I'm fine' of some sort to whoever stopped him...

but then that voice freezes him right in his own thoughts.

And when he turns back to actually see who it is, he nearly stumbles backward - which would land him safely on the ropes, but would be awfully harrowing regardless. Good thing you've got his arm there, huh, s t r a n g e r.]

You're-!

[Okay, maybe just grabbing someone out of nowhere wasn't the best idea. But Bruno doesn't think it really deserves a reaction like this...! He frowns a little as he looks down (and down and down) at Yusei.]

...sorry!

[He lets go of Yusei, holding both hands up in a sign of surrender.]

I was just trying to save you some trouble.

[And he offers a smile. Please don't be mad!]

Rope Bridge Rumble

[Having just finished getting a particularly nasty knot out of one of the ropes, Lann steps back and grins.]

Piece of cake! I'll have these ropes whipped back into shape in no time.

[Then he turns around to look at his last triumph over the crafty ropes.]

Aw, come on! I just fixed that one.

[Yeah it's a total mess again.]

Toil and Trouble

[Lann is watching the actors rehearse the play with a frown and a furrowed brow. Finally, he leans over and whispers to the nearest person.]

Man, these murder mystery things are tough. Is the killer that Banquet guy?

[Well, he certainly doesn't look mad, just shaken. Though, his expression usually kind of leans toward 'all too serious', so maybe that lends itself to looking angry to some degree. Either way, there's something in his gut practically screaming at him to not to spill the beans on knowing Bruno right away. Like something awful would happen as a result.

Which leads to an awkward lull in the conversation while Yusei tries to figure out where to go from here.]

. . . You startled me. [That's a good start.]

[Toushirou is enjoying his time in the sky, usually the faster way for him to travel and inspecting the area around here.

What he doesn't really expect is seeing Alibaba trying to reach the guy.]
