TEST DRIVE # 19



Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.



Marriage Mystery

A brand-new wedding chapel in an upscale Tokyo neighborhood has a problem: both brides and grooms keep getting stood up at the altar! Help find one of the fleeing spouses, and figure out if it's just wedding jitters or whether there's an ayakashi scaring off would-be newlyweds.

Nervous Neighbors

This quiet suburb has been rocked by the arrival of a new family... or is it a rock band? They've painted their house purple with blue LEDs under the eaves, they loudly practice electric guitar and trumpet late into the night, and they put their garbage and recycling out on the wrong days. And now, they've invited the whole neighborhood to a barbecue. One way or another, this is going to be a party to remember.

Outrageous Owls

Something's gotten into the owls at Kamakura beach. Not only are they showing up during the day, but they're fighting off the seagulls and dive-bombing surprised beachgoers to steal their bentos... and are they a little bigger than usual, too? Could some of these angry owls be angry spirits instead? Oh no! Duck!

Putrid Piles

Performance art or gross prank? That's the question in Ginza this week, where giant heaps of household garbage are appearing on the sidewalks and even in the street overnight. For some reason, no one's been able to catch a glimpse of the prankster. Maybe what they need is a little divine assistance, or at least some help power-washing the sidewalk before the upscale shoppers arrive.

Quilt Quandary

A fiber art exhibit at the Tokyo Art Museum is having some very strange problems. At first the labels just seemed to be out of order, but now it seems like the dozens of gorgeously sewed antique quilts in the exhibit have a mind of their own. They fall off the walls, they drape over display cases and swaddle priceless statues, and sometimes they even tangle up visitors or security guards. The museum needs someone to deal with whatever's gotten into their quilts in a hurry, but be careful and don't break anything!

Marriage Mystery

[Orders are orders, so Archer finds himself watching the chapel. It's rather inconspicious aside the usual wedding decorations. In this exact moment a groom runs out of the door and straight into Archer.]

Oomph!

[Archer doesn't budge, while the groom groans covering his nose. That must've hurt.]

Outrageous Owls

[Since when do the owls attack during the day? While Archer has no qualms about watching the spectacle, his sense of duty prompts him to take an action. With a whispered command he materializes his bow and arrow and takes aim at the closest owl. Note that his definition of the closest may vary up to twenty meters from anyone else.]

Hmph.

Owls

[ A real druid would be vehemently against such action. But Cu isn't even close to what would be a real druid, even if he accepted his role as a Caster in this manifestation. So it's almost a little amusing to see shot birds dropping down among the beach and causing panic. Keyword: almost. ]

Didn't they teach you not to kill more than you can eat, oy?

[ Arguably dead owls are causing MORE panics than bento-stealing owls ]

I think this might not be how we're supposed to deal with this situation.

[Archer pauses his target practice and smirks.]

Took you long enough. [that, and the fact it's his god doesn't make any difference. He considers the owls, nocks an arrow and shoots two more. Impressive? He's an Archer, after all.]

Do you have a better idea?

[futhark]

Yes I do! Since you failed to notice it yourself, you'll have to do something for me first.

[ If that has to be you, be a nice shinki and behave ]

Give those owls some rest.

[boneofsword]

Suit yourself.

[Yet Archer's bow vanishes as he turns towards Cu and crosses his arms. He can behave and have some verbal sparring at the same time, because why not. The tattoo on his back, his shinki name, pulses in the rhythm of his heartbeat.]

Your turn.

Slow down. I know you're eager for action but hear me out. [ Not yet fighting time, Caster keeps just lazily observing the scene and points at the beach ]

You can kill the bird yourself, and no ayakashi escapes a carcass. You know what that means?

[boneofsword]

That those aren't ayakashi, but regular owls. [Archer frowns, having no idea where is that explanation leading. Nonetheless he does listen.]

[futhark]

We should check the food-boxes. [ Because something is clearly affecting the birds ]

[boneofsword]

A sound advice. [Is that a sarcasm? Most likely, since Archer can't keep it out of his voice. He starts towards the nearest bento boxes, picking one to sniff the contents suspiciously.]

Owls

[reformedsinner]

Hmm.

[Hakkai's casually watching as Archer takes aim. Are the owls actually causing enough danger to need to be killed? He's not sure -- they mainly seem to be annoying people, which is more amusing than dangerous.

On the other hand, they've been asked to deal with the issue, and shooting down the owls is the most expedient way to do it.]

Isn't that one a bit far for an accurate shot?

[Archer ignores the question for now, focusing on the target. He shoots, and not one but two owls go down.]

It's close enough.

[reformedsinner]

So I see!

[Two birds with one arrow. How about that? He chuckles, and offers a polite inclination of his head.]

Cho Hakkai. It's a pleasure.

[boneofsword]

[Archer dematerializes his weapon and offers a very formal bow.]

I'm called Archer. It's nice to meet you.

[He may remember having a different name, but this one seems more familiar.]

And you.

[Hakkai's eyebrows arch.] I can see how you'd earn a name like that. If you don't mind me asking, you must be from the Far Shore-- god or shinki?

[He casts a glance over the other man, looking for a visible name. His bow can't have been a shinki, even if it disappeared like one; it's more likely some sort of weapon like Gojyo's or Goku's.]

[boneofsword]

[Archer's vessel name isn't visible anywhere, and he prefers it like that. There's less risk involved.]

I'm a shinki. Haven't been here for long, though.

[reformedsinner]

[Hakkai nods.] I'm a god -- although I haven't been here long myself. Barely half a year.

[-- and, with a faint smile:] Although it seems longer when you're a shinki. Perhaps it's because it's all you remember.

[boneofsword]

[Archer takes note of peculiar phrasing, but isn't going to ask. It may be just consideration and nothing at all.]

Perhaps it's because you have to start anew without knowing how you got there or anything about this place. [he suggests dryly.]

HI | Marriage

[in_it_to_rin_it]

[ And hot on the poor guy's heels is your equally hot headed Master. Thankfully this whole god business means her tearing after the groom down the aisle isn't going to cause a ruckus. ]

Make sure he doesn't get away!

[ A simple order. Poor guy looks too stunned to move anyway. ]

OH HI

[boneofsword]

[Archer isn't going anywhere, aside sidestepping into the groom's path again when the guy tries to run.]

Stay here or you'll hurt yourself.

I screeched when I saw you 8D

We probably shouldn't question him here. There's a small chapel out in the back.

[ She does glance back at the altar. Good. Everyone's too busy fussing over the bride... poor girl. Nontheless, they're just gonna borrow her groom for a bit. She'll just sidestep the two, heading for the door. ]

Let's go. The sooner we finish with him, the sooner we can give him back.

let's screech together! \o/

[boneofsword]

[Archer spares no glance at the other people, steering the terrified groom to follow Rin. Being ignored by mortals is as much of a blessing as a curse, since the groom doesn't want to move and only does so after seeing Archer's glare.] The less mortals around the better.

/o/ this is the first time I'm taking her out in the open!

[in_it_to_rin_it]

[ She'll leave it up to him to keep their captive in tow. But he's a little to nervous, a little too titchy for her liking even if he's shuffling after them.

She was right to worry.

The minute they're out of the church, he's pushing her out of the way and off again. Thankfully Rin catches herself before she can stumble. ]

Dammit! We'll have to go after--

[ What gives her pause is that dark speck on the fleeing groom's back. It's menacing looking, about the size of her hand and spiderlike. It's 'legs' seem to be digging into the back of the man's neck. ]

....an ayakashi?

she's fun and I'd love to play more!

[boneofsword]

[That pisses Archer off and he's after the groom in a flash, blocking his way so effectively the guy lands flat on his ass from the force of the impact. Rin's words make him pause. On the other hand, ayakashi prefer shinki over humans, so becoming a bait is an option. That is, unless-] You think there's an ayakashi nest in the chapel?

Ah I'm glad! >u< I'm liking this too!

[in_it_to_rin_it]

[ At least that was enough to make their target think twice about running away. Fool her once, shame on her. Fool her twice...

But she does approach, resisting the urge to crack her knuckles. ]

Given how it's mostly couples marrying at this chapel, it looks pretty likely this is where they're nesting...

[ But where...? ]

We should get rid of the parasite on this guy before we start investigating.

Use me. [Archer suggest it so matter-of-factly like it's the most natural thing.]

Best bait for ayakashi is a shinki or god, isn't it? We can draw them out in the open after we take care of this one.
