TEST DRIVE # 12

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Daring Drinks

A couple of local bars are going out of their way to make new and interesting drinks for their customers to try, in a long-standing war between the two bars. Of course, they're going a little off the rails, so there are some very interesting - and somewhat scary - combinations popping out of the woodworks. And they want everyone passing by to try them.

Electric Eels

An odd ayakashi is causing some of the eels at the local aquarium to become literally electric, causing the eels to shock the other inhabitants in their tanks. This is causing a pretty big uproar and if it isn't fixed soon, someone could die or the aquarium might even just shut down entirely.

Frog Friend

Large frogs are popping up all over the place and following people around. They don't seem malicious in any way, but they are kind of creepy to look at, brightly colored, and leave trails of slippery goo wherever they stand. Oh, and they like to jump at people and knock them over, just for fun.

Gaseous Grandpas

A local home for older men is having a problem with a number of their inhabitants where they literally cannot stop farting and belching. It turns out this is the work of an ayakashi that just thinks farts and burps are funny and knows it's easier to get those sorts of things out of old people. Help the poor old guys out, would you?

Horrifying Hentai

Many known otaku in the area are dealing with a rather terrifying problem - every hentai they watch lately comes into reality very suddenly. Sometimes this means cute, begging girls, sure, but it also means tentacles and aliens and a whole rash of other things too. You'll have to stop the ayakashi that is bringing these 'fantasies' to life in order to save these guys.

If you're uncertain about anything, feel free to check out the Premise, Rules, and FAQ posts. And don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have on the FAQ!
When and if you're ready to join the game, check out the Taken Characters before throwing in a Reserve and starting on your Application
Have fun!

But then they'd still be in the tanks.

[Well that's true enough. Why lie when the truth works just as well? He climbs carefully down from his perch, his prize thrashing in his rubber-gloved grip. Into the bin it goes with the other ones.

Xehanort was capable of being responsible! He was remarkably organized at the very least, it was just that the need to know frequently overrode things like common sense. Once he got these things to his laboratory, he--

... is apparently way more predictable than he liked. He doesn't look particularly guilty about it, in fact he's eyeing the aquariums again to see if he can spot another electrical menace. He had been told explicitly to trust his shinki's judgment, and he suspected she was going to think this was a very bad idea.

He needed more of them. Every eel.]

.......It's possible, yes. They'd make a charming addition to the garden, don't you think? I wonder how that ayakashi is even influencing them in this manner. I'd like to study it further.

[Give him even a hairs-breadth of wiggle room and he's going to try to bring that monster back too.]

Aren't you a little curious too?

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-04 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Xehanort is right on the dot, because-]

No.

[She doesn't even have to think about it that hard. Placing her hands on her hips, Wendy merely quirks an eyebrow at him as he carefully comes down from on top of the upturned trash can. While there's no way she's ever going to win a battle in height, she can at least make herself seem sturdy and thus incapable of being moved.]

Not even talking about all the ways it's a bad idea, can these things even live in the gardens? If they're in an aquarium, that probably means they need a lot of care, right?

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-04 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[As Wendy takes up her defiant stance, Xehanort eyes her soberly, visibly debating whether or not it's worth arguing about. On one hand he really did want to study these things. Maybe dissect them a little, see if it's a permanent thing or not.

On the other hand, is it really worth putting the effort into winning her over to his endless curiosity over eels when he can reserve that effort for something potentially more long-term meaningful?

Well. It's worth ONE more shot, but after that..]

If they're in an aquarium then they can be kept safely outside the wild. It's the current electrical part which renders them a menance that shouldn't be allowed to stay. I'm sure I could rig something up in short order..

[He could too.]

Of course barring the eels, the ayakashi that did this to them could also be worth study.

[Because clearly if he can't have the animal, BRINGING HOME THE MONSTER is the better idea.]
nopixiedust: (sassybird) (This is so stupid.)

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-05 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
[This is why Xehanort needs a babysitter. This right here. Wendy closes her eyes, gathering her calm with a steady inhale and a cool exhale. The ayakashi. Really. Just to double check for herself, she glances over to one of the other tanks to see if she can spot it- ]

[A translucent, almost shapeless thing, squirming through the water, too bright and unnatural to be the water itself, and Xehanort will be able to feel through their bond the ripple of disgust that goes through her as her eyes land on the creature. As if there’s any doubt, the sensation is all over her face in the way she shrinks away even though that particular tank is across the room, her lips drawn back and her brow furrowed.]

Definitely not.

[Still…. When compared to what he could be doing with that insatiable curiosity of his, maybe… Arms still crossed, she walks over to inspect the current group of captured eels and narrows her eyes down at them.]

...Alright. Let’s say I did go along with this. Tell me how you’d get them back to the temple, how you’d take care of them, and what kind of research you’d do on them.

[Convince her he’ll be a responsible pet owner, basically.]

[Something that can grant electrical powers to a mere eel might be able to do it to other things too, it's worthy of study! Honestly, Xehanort doesn't expect her to budge on either one, but if he didn't at least make a token effort at it, then how could he say he ever tried at all?

The ayakashi is rejected, as he expects. Who really wanted such a thing around? (It'd be fun to take apart..) But when she studies the eels and then asks her own hypothetical questions, for a moment he looks remarkably startled.

Well!]

Carrying them back in their current bin wouldn't be too hard, I'm strong enough. Creating a reliable pen to keep them in long-term shouldn't be hard, there's surely plenty of large all-glass aquariums to be purchased hereabouts, and glass is nearly as good an insulator as rubber.

[Of course salt water being what it is, he wouldn't be able to keep them alive for long without having prepped for a couple weeks ahead of time but that wasn't really vital was it?]

How they're generating their electricity is of course the primary goal. If it'll fade over time or if it's now a permanent change, along with their aggressiveness. Perhaps it can be harnessed and made useful.

[Because seriously who needs generators when you have angry electric eels. It almost sounds feasable, except this is Xehanort, he has nothing set up yet, and probably those eels are going to wind up dead, taken apart, and possibly then lightly grilled.]
nopixiedust: (insovereign) (Nope I went the fuck home like)

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-07 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Patiently, she lets him make his spiel, taking it all in. Honestly, it almost sounds sensible. He has a good point about how easy it is to get aquarium tanks in the city- it’s easy to get most things in the city, Wendy has found since beginning her life as a shinki- and it would be pretty nice to have a generator…]

[...but this is all assuming that they already had things in place for the sudden acquisition of a bunch of eels, which Wendy knows for a fact that they don’t.]

[Still, maybe this will teach him something. Matter of factly, she holds up a pair of fingers.]

You can bring back two to the temple, and that’s it. If they die- [And she has a sneaking suspicion it’s more a matter of ‘when’] -then we’re not replacing them. Okay?
fixed_destiny: (06)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-07 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And what of the other eels? And the ayakashi which created them?

[It might not be a total victory but he'll take it. If he can get her to cooperate on such minor things perhaps eventually when it's something far more important, she'll be more agreeable. Eventually he would have to see if this world, too, had a door..

But until then there were eels and the deformed remains of what were human beings now turned monsters, and he supposed somewhat reluctantly that the entire situation couldn't be allowed to stay as it was even if he wasn't directly benefiting from it.

That was after all why Wendy had been called to begin with, hadn't it? He can't get rid of them permanently on his own.]

The ayakashi is easy, isn’t it?

[It’s what she’s here for: the best weapon against what can only be described as demonic, monstrous, only… it takes her God to let her do anything substantial. Letting her arms swing down from where they are in front of her chest, she takes a breath and looks to him.]

Just call my name, and we’ll get rid of it.

[One might wonder how a pair of ballet flats could do much against monsters, but those are the kind of people who don’t have ballet flats which can manipulate gravity. It’ll help get the thing out of the water, and they can move on from there. Hopefully the eels stop being as dangerous then…]

Not so long ago I was the foremost apprentice to a great king.

[Carefully, Xehanort sticks the lid on the tub of thrashing eels. Sure she said two, and there's definitely more than two in there, but he's not really paying attention. Eels have been acquired, now there is a monster to deal with.]

And now.. now I'm a god, for what that's worth, and I defeat my enemies via delicate silk shoes.

[His tone is very, very dry. He's not terribly upset by it, after all, Wendy was his guide and guard in more than just gravitational forces and a powerful ally besides, but it was not at all what he imagined he'd be doing with his life.]

Let's handle this quickly and return home. Hōseki.
nopixiedust: (insovereign) (He bought me an oreo ice cream)

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-11 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Unable to help herself, a laugh bubbles out into the air and then into Xehanort’s mind as her body becomes light jolting straight to him.]

Delicate silk shoes that are magic, thank you.

[But she’s teasing as she takes a moment to adjust herself in the state of her vessel form. It’s not too bad, once she’s gotten used to it, but there’s still always that strangeness…. Well, whatever. As long as he doesn’t get her wet.]
fixed_destiny: (06)

omfg sorry for the delay! I read it and then forgot that I didn't reply!

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-13 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
[At least they're comfortable delicate silk shoes of magic. He wasn't quite sure he liked the idea of literally walking around on his shinki, but it was what it was.]

This is so. Magical then. Speaking of, let's see if I can use your power without breaking anything I don't intend to this time.

[GRAVITY. Well, he's nothing if not up to the challenge and he had an innate knack for magic anyway, this one just worked a little differently than he was used to, and required being rather up close and personal. Carefully he steps around puddles and wet spots - silk soaked water fast after all and wet feet wouldn't be fun for him either.

The ayakashi seems aware that the game is up too, settling further and deeper into the water, but as Xehanort makes a scramble for the top of the tank and plunges a hand into the water, simple gravity means it's not staying where it wants to, instead dragged upwards, thrashing in angry protest. Touching these things is never a good idea, but he's going to anyway. Blight can be handled later!]

What do you think. Squash it quickly, or see what it does first?
nopixiedust: (sassybird) (You are the patron saint)

no problem! I've lost tags too before aha

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-13 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Frankly, Wendy hadn’t been happy about the “being on his feet” thing either at first, but she’s getting over it. Being in her vessel form is a… weird experience, and while she’s still generally still aware of a lot of things- and being able to see from all directions is pretty handy too- it’s not as bad as she was really expecting.]

[Easier to communicate, too, amusement at his first statement, concern and disapproval flickering through when he just out and grabs the ayakashi. He’s always doing this- one day she’s going to sit him down and have a long talk about needlessly hurting himself even if it’s in the pursuit of something interesting.]

You’re the one who said to get it over with quickly, weren’t you? I’ll take back what I said about the eels if you play around with it.

[Don’t test her on this, buddy.]
fixed_destiny: (05)

it took a while to pick a god and get the vessel name/weapon name thing right

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not playing, it's study.

[He can feel her disapproval and won't really argue the point - he was after all getting what he wanted - but it still wasn't just for entertainment. It was for education! A much more important, nobler goal.

The ayakashi is in fact actually electrical and very unhappy about being held onto, and the sudden jolt of electrical pain is almost enough to make him drop it. Almost but not quite. First get it out of the water where they can properly get rid of the thing.]

Isn't it a good idea to know thy enemy?

[But it'll have to go. Xehanort would have other opportunities, with other ayakashi, perhaps ones more interesting than this. Picking his battles, and making sure he was going to win the ones that would really matter, was far more important.

Besides which, there was some satisfaction in destroying these things. And although Wendy did not have the form of a weapon, her unique power let that not be an issue at all. Gravity could crush as effectively as a sword could cut, after all.

And sometimes there was even a little pop at the end.]

You, who desecrate this land of the Rising Sun! With my advent, I, Janus, lay waste with the Takaraki and expel thy vast defilement! Rend!!

[Ordinarily in other cases with other shinki this involves actual direct attacks. But not for them.]
nopixiedust: (sassybird) (He signed me a blank check)

No problem!

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
[A delicate little scoff echoes through their connection.]

You have an awful lot of fun with studying, so it counts.

[But it’s fine. She won’t judge him for being a huge nerd. So long as he doesn’t hurt himself or her or destroy the temple or anything, at least. Everyone needs a hobby, right? His is just fueled by curiosity, even towards things that are a bad idea. In a way, it’s almost endearing. It’s like dealing with a little kid who wants to stick everything in their mouth just to see what happens, only not so literal.]

[Grabbing an electrified ayakashi is actually a little worse.]

[But it’s a fortunate thing they’re armed with the power she carries. That means an ayakashi- at least one of this size- doesn’t stand a chance against them. She waits impassively as it tries to thrash, waiting for that inevitable- yep, there it is. This one popped.]

And that’s that. Do you want to check on your eels again to see if they’ve changed?
fixed_destiny: (13)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't enjoy your work, it's not the job you should be doing.

[Well he hasn't destroyed anything majorly important just yet, so there's that! Aside from the occasional ayakashi at any rate. How he wound up with a shinki both aware of the mayhem Xehanort could probably get up to AND prevent it without building resentment in the process was nothing short of a minor miracle.

Maybe Wendy had experience with dealing with people like him, who knows. It meant he might be leaving with some eels and a smattering of blight instead of an ayakashi at least.

As the radiance of the thing's inevitable death fade, Xehanort's quick to allow Wendy to regain a human form instead of staying as a pair of magical slippers, then makes a beeline for the tubs to find out.

He is for his efforts at poking around inside, immediately zapped again by the things.]

Still electrified, but it seems a bit less of a jolt this time. Ow. Do you think the aquarium will notice they're gone?

[... Do you leave a note for this sort of thing? "Sorry, hijacked by a god!"?

....]

Eels aside. May I ask something only vaguely related?
nopixiedust: (sassybird) (He signed me a blank check)

[personal profile] nopixiedust 2017-01-17 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
[From where she’s dusting off her dress, Wendy pauses at the question. She’d just assumed that he’d be completely preoccupied by studying the eels, but to ask a question of her- well. She’s not the scientific sort, just the babysitting sort (apparently), so it’s pretty interesting to think of what he might ask of her.]

If you take more than a couple, probably…. Anyway, what is it?
