TEST DRIVE # 12

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Daring Drinks

A couple of local bars are going out of their way to make new and interesting drinks for their customers to try, in a long-standing war between the two bars. Of course, they're going a little off the rails, so there are some very interesting - and somewhat scary - combinations popping out of the woodworks. And they want everyone passing by to try them.

Electric Eels

An odd ayakashi is causing some of the eels at the local aquarium to become literally electric, causing the eels to shock the other inhabitants in their tanks. This is causing a pretty big uproar and if it isn't fixed soon, someone could die or the aquarium might even just shut down entirely.

Frog Friend

Large frogs are popping up all over the place and following people around. They don't seem malicious in any way, but they are kind of creepy to look at, brightly colored, and leave trails of slippery goo wherever they stand. Oh, and they like to jump at people and knock them over, just for fun.

Gaseous Grandpas

A local home for older men is having a problem with a number of their inhabitants where they literally cannot stop farting and belching. It turns out this is the work of an ayakashi that just thinks farts and burps are funny and knows it's easier to get those sorts of things out of old people. Help the poor old guys out, would you?

Horrifying Hentai

Many known otaku in the area are dealing with a rather terrifying problem - every hentai they watch lately comes into reality very suddenly. Sometimes this means cute, begging girls, sure, but it also means tentacles and aliens and a whole rash of other things too. You'll have to stop the ayakashi that is bringing these 'fantasies' to life in order to save these guys.

If you're uncertain about anything, feel free to check out the Premise, Rules, and FAQ posts. And don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have on the FAQ!
When and if you're ready to join the game, check out the Taken Characters before throwing in a Reserve and starting on your Application
Have fun!

Myfanwy Thomas | The Rook | Shinki

Daring Drinks

[Myfanwy should probably be helping to pass out these drinks. The bar she's at has a prominently posted good-luck charm with her god's name written all over it, after all. She is probably obligated to assist.

On the other hand she's had a very long day that started with hearing that she was dead and a god was going to use her as a combat accessory from now on, and so as far as she's concerned this is a very good evening to sink into a leather couch in a place with too much neon and drink something that contains at least eight different types of alcohol and an umbrella.

Also a pick with fruit.

And an olive.

She takes a big gulp, trying desperately not to taste it, and thinks free sample, free sample to herself as she swallows.]

... Huh.

[Rosemary, vodka, Kalamata olives and orange liqueur... actually works?

A little?

She takes a second, more cautious sip, rolling it across her tongue before she declares in tones of wonder:]
That's not so bad!

Electric Eels

[Someone on the other side of the room is getting CPR and everyone is shouting. Myfanwy, secure in her invisibility, stares through the damp front of the aquarium tank at the eerily blue-lit water inside. There are several moray eels in the tank, snapping at the other fish as they convulse, go limp, and float up towards the surface, and she can practically feel the weird snap of electricity in organs that shouldn't be doing that.

She can feel it, in fact. Not even "practically." It's like biting down on aluminum foil, an uncomfortable, unnatural sizzle that raises the hairs on her arms and shivers around the fish in electric coils.]

Stop that, will you?

[She reaches out, not sure what she's doing, and grabs the weird sizzling parts of the eel with her mind. It just makes so much sense, somehow.

For a moment, she feels electric, and sways forward, about to go face-first into the glass as she bends her mind to figuring out the electricity and shutting it down before the eels -- and half the patrons -- wind up dead.]

Drinks!

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-04 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you're fond of sweets, try the one with the gummy worms. It's not awful, for a pending cavity.

[Some god or other is going to use her as a combat accessory, but not this one! This one's too busy with a pair of drinks of his own, one of which is smoking.

And smells faintly of burning plastic.]

...What's in that one?
wontheexchange: (isn't that lovely)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-04 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Olives and triple sec. [She eyes the gummy worm option, and decides, reluctantly, against it. She can already feel lightheadedness stealing over her, and she's only halfway through this drink.]

Aren't gummy worms a little "I've just turned eighteen and this is my first legal cocktail"?

[How old is this guy, anyway? He looks early twenties, tops, despite his shockingly white hair.]
fixed_destiny: (08)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds interesting, orange is good. ...Green or black olives?

[Black are acceptable, green are an abomination thanks to those little red things in the middle, he will have none of it!

After a moment he puts the smoking drink down, the glass is looking a little .. melted.]

I thought those were the ones with the little umbrellas in them, and the cherry at the bottom? The gummy worm one is very sweet though, if you like sweet.

[Something in his tone says he is NOT. And ..also not fond of drinks that melt glasses, apparently. But if she wasn't working more on the drink samplers she had, perhaps she'd already had more than enough.

Xehanort is either twenty oneish or over eighty, depending on who one asks. Either way, still drinking age!]

Which bar do you think will win their contest?
wontheexchange: (Default)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-04 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Black. They're those briny Greek olives. [She picks the umbrella out of her drink between two slightly chewed fingernails (it has been a long, long day) and waves it at him.]

Don't put down umbrellas. Drinks with umbrellas in them are for all ages. All adult ages.

[She puts on her very serious law-abiding face, which slips to a smirk too fast to really have much of an impact, and downs another mouthful of her drink. Is there gin in this too, or is that just the rosemary? She can't really tell.]

This one. The other one's all gimmicks.

[This one's at least part gimmicks, she admits to herself, eyeing his smoking, half-melted glass -- no one is really going to drink anything that does that to plastic, are they? What's in it, nail polish remover?

Still, it's got her god's charm in the window. So she has a partisan favorite.]
fixed_destiny: (09)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-04 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Black olive good ... but where, or what was Greek? He very nearly gets to ask that question, but then a tiny umbrella is waved at him. Okay he could sort of grudgingly admit that maybe tiny umbrellas weren't just for kids, they were kind of neat.]

All ages, put them in milk shakes.

[Or virgin drinks, but he's a little dubious about those.]

I noticed someone's already marked this one for patronage, I wonder if they'd mind a bit of rivalry? The gimmicks are rather fun, maybe with a little help they'll go further.

[RIVALS. ...There was a certain way that normal people just ignored their presence - both of them - that told him she was either god or shinki herself. He wasn't quite sure which, and a quick glance didn't make anything overly obvious either.

Oh right, introductions. He offers a hand, smile brief but apparently genuine.]

My name's Xehanort. It's nice to meet you.
wontheexchange: (whimsical)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-04 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Myfanwy. [She pronounces it to rhyme with Tiffany, breaking into a sudden grin as she reaches forward to take his hand.]

Watch where you're looking for rivals. This place's my god's.
fixed_destiny: (14)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-04 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[That faint smile widens. Her god! So shinki then, but also directly involved. That was a good thing, wasn't it?]

Really? Well, then you might know better than anyone how your god might handle a bit of competition! I don't want to make enemies mind, but humanity seems to thrive under a little bit of pressure.
wontheexchange: (did you want this?)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-04 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ask him, I'm new.

[Plus, she's enjoying her drink. She sits back comfortably, draining the last of the cup in a swig, and pulls out the stick with the olive and orange slice on it, biting the olive off.]

So what are you, a god? Or just not human?
fixed_destiny: (Default)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-05 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Knowing even basic things about one's god doesn't seem like it would interrupt a drink to Xehanort. He seems a little baffled.]

You should find out then. Get to know the sort of person you're now tied to in a pretty permanent fashion.

[For better or for worse, really!]

As far as I know I'm both human and a god. The latter part hasn't changed my species I don't think.
wontheexchange: (forethought)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-05 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think being a god trumps being a human? Funny. I would.

[Being a shinki probably trumps being a human; she's heard she's supposed to be dead, for one thing.]
fixed_destiny: (08)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-05 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
My idea of what qualifies as a god or human might be a little different.

[Very casually, he leans over and prods the still-smoking glass. This seems to split it right up the seam, where it promptly begins dribbling onto the table and .. setting that to smoking too.

He should probably find a person to clean that, he had no idea what was in it.]

Being human is about what's inside as much as outside right? Your thoughts, your morals or lack of them, your upbringing and--

[Xehanort pauses, then frowns slowly.]

I'm not sure now is a good time to get into that speech though.
wontheexchange: (city girl)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-05 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's about your brain.

[Myfanwy leans forward earnestly. This might not be the right kind of philosophical conversation for her to get into: even just one large and weirdly flavored drink into the evening, she's already feeling flushed and combative. All of that mumbo-jumbo about morality and upbringing, though?]

A rubbishy upbringing does not make you not human. You're right it's not about the outside altogether. It's what's in there.

[She reaches up to prod one finger against the man's forehead, squinting in an attempt to look particularly serious and meaningful.]

But I guess we're all dead. Living people can't even see us unless we bash them over the head.
fixed_destiny: (06)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-05 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
The thoughts in it maybe, I'm not so certain about the need of the actual brain ITSELF sometimes..

[He has theories about this. And experiments planned, but they have to come AFTER he figures out this world's underpinnings and then gets back to his planned experiments with the darkness..

He has way too much to do and only one lifetime to do it in.

Being poked in the forehead jolts him out of that train of thought quickly, and he leeeaanns back just enough to prevent a possible second poke.]

That could just mean there's some sort of illusion around us. After all nobody's trying to walk through us or take our drinks, we're still 'here', we're just being ignored. Unlike what some would do to something invisible, or a spirit.

[Actually.]

Here, let's test that out. There's plenty of ordinary people here. If they can't see us at all, they shouldn't react in any way to us being here. But if we're simply disregarded..

[She should escape while she can. This sort of thing never ends well.]
wontheexchange: (fox among hounds)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I meant.

[She's squinting at him with deep dubiousness. Of course they're just being disregarded. If they were actually invisible, she wouldn't have been able to get her drinks in the first place, and getting someone's attention would have scared them.

They're just hard to notice, which means they may as well be invisible unless they make the effort first.]

S'not an illusion, though. They can see us when we want.
fixed_destiny: (01)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-06 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Where I'm from, ghosts and the dead aren't simply ignored. They're not there.

[Maybe things were different where she was from! Did spirits live alongside people all the time, taking their drinks and leaving smoking ruins on the countertops?

... Other worlds are far more interesting than his own.]

That doesn't sound like the dead to me. Disembodied perhaps, in the case of shinki given how malleable you are to your gods' wills.. but dead? I'm not sure I believe that. It doesn't match up with what we can observe!
wontheexchange: (city girl)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-08 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, you never noticed them.

[She points at him with a tipsily earnest "gotcha!" face, and lets her hand fall after a second, shrugging.]

I don't know about you. Are gods dead? They told me I am.
fixed_destiny: (09)

[personal profile] fixed_destiny 2017-01-08 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No.. we kept pretty close track of what happened after a person died.

[And ran experiments on it. There was no mystery about death itself, but those escaping hearts...

Well, now's not the time for that.]

I'm certainly not dead. And you're hardly dead as well. The dead don't breathe, eat, drink, sleep, stand around in bars competing over who has the best drinks, and so on. I am certain if I took out a needle and pricked your skin, you would also bleed unless you're wildly different in some fashion from my own shinki, which I doubt.
wontheexchange: (all reasonable people)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
To their bodies, maybe. You know, sticking your subordinates with needles to check for blood wasn't in the deal last I heard.

[This is a very dry look he's getting.]

[ The woman isn't invisible, though -- not to Hokuto at least. A fun day at the aquarium has turned into a bizarre incident, and she's been busy trying to help people to their feet and away from the tanks, where much of the weirdness seems to be originating.

Surely this has to be an ayakashi's doing? She hasn't actually seen all the things they care capable of, but she has an idea. Bad spirits breed bad energy. She might not remember much of herself, but she does know this. Somehow.

She pauses after helping an old lady to her feet, staring curiously at the woman who in turn is staring into the eel tank. Hokuto doesn't have a moment to think on what's happening. The woman sways precariously on her feet, and Hokuto rushes over. ]

Hey! Are you okay??
wontheexchange: (the problem is no one listens to me)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Myfanwy's senses split dizzyingly as the girl rushes up to her, and she barely manages to tell the electrical cells in the eels to shut themselves off before her hands hit the wet glass. The shock is mild, but still enough to take her breath away and lock her hands in place for a second.]

Great, I really needed to be interrupted in the middle of that, I'm just trying to figure out how a moray eel went electric --

[She trails off: okay, this kid is pretty young, actually, and she's starting to feel guilty about snapping.]

I'm fine.
twin_star: (subaru: tender)

[personal profile] twin_star 2017-01-05 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh!

[ It's not her tone that surprises her, but the fact that she was apparently interrupting ... something. She's not entirely sure what, but she can accept the existence of this 'something' quite naturally. She's not sure why. ]

I'm sorry. Were you casting a spell of some kind?
wontheexchange: (city girl)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-05 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay, the girl rolled with that one way too easily. Myfanwy eyes her, uncertain, before nodding.]

You can think of it that way. I was reading its body. It's not the most complicated thing, but there is something wrong with those eels, and I have to concentrate.

[Some of the fish are shaking off their shock and starting to swim jerkily again; others are still floating. Those are probably the dead ones, Myfanwy supposes. Someone's getting sushi tonight.

Probably the eels.

She flattens her hands more firmly against the wet glass, eyes going suddenly vague and breath slowing as she focused her attention on the twisting, flashing nervous impulses running through the eels.]
twin_star: (bunny)

[personal profile] twin_star 2017-01-06 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I see...

[ Truly, she'd like to know more about this remarkable ability to 'read' another creature. She doesn't say more, however. This woman turns back to the tank and channels (?) her power into it. Hokuto falls silent and tries not to disturb her as she works. ]
wontheexchange: (begins the debate)

[personal profile] wontheexchange 2017-01-06 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Myfanwy's eyes stay vague and distant as her hands press close against the glass, but slowly, inside the tank, the shadow of a purplish fish begins to stir and unfold around the stricken eels. It glides lazily close up to the glass, turning so that one bulging, red-and-yellow eye can roll and focus on Hokuto and Myfanwy.

The eye blinks.

Glistening scales all along the side of the fish's body split and blink, revealing dozens of other eyes in the same sickly color scheme, and the fish circles, tail pumping as it readies itself to leap out of the tank.]
