TEST DRIVE # 12

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Daring Drinks

A couple of local bars are going out of their way to make new and interesting drinks for their customers to try, in a long-standing war between the two bars. Of course, they're going a little off the rails, so there are some very interesting - and somewhat scary - combinations popping out of the woodworks. And they want everyone passing by to try them.

Electric Eels

An odd ayakashi is causing some of the eels at the local aquarium to become literally electric, causing the eels to shock the other inhabitants in their tanks. This is causing a pretty big uproar and if it isn't fixed soon, someone could die or the aquarium might even just shut down entirely.

Frog Friend

Large frogs are popping up all over the place and following people around. They don't seem malicious in any way, but they are kind of creepy to look at, brightly colored, and leave trails of slippery goo wherever they stand. Oh, and they like to jump at people and knock them over, just for fun.

Gaseous Grandpas

A local home for older men is having a problem with a number of their inhabitants where they literally cannot stop farting and belching. It turns out this is the work of an ayakashi that just thinks farts and burps are funny and knows it's easier to get those sorts of things out of old people. Help the poor old guys out, would you?

Horrifying Hentai

Many known otaku in the area are dealing with a rather terrifying problem - every hentai they watch lately comes into reality very suddenly. Sometimes this means cute, begging girls, sure, but it also means tentacles and aliens and a whole rash of other things too. You'll have to stop the ayakashi that is bringing these 'fantasies' to life in order to save these guys.

Are you electric proof? Because I'm not.

[Yuuri sighs, because it does sound pretty stupid when she puts it like that, doesn't it?]

I didn't mean we should just grab them with our hands... there's got to be something we could use to grab them that wouldn't conduct it. Something made of rubber, maybe? There should probably be something like that around, since it's used for so many waterproof things...

Rubber can really do that? [She's pretty surprised.] I didn't know that! I guess there's a reason you wear glasses, huh?

Yes, because I like being able to see things.

[That was common knowledge, he thought? It's not as if he's unusually clever or anything...]

[Anyway, where would they find something like that?]

There are probably some supplies kept somewhere or other in the staff area. Maybe we should try to find where they're kept?

Yeah, but you use them for reading, right?

[Listen, this is all a bit beyond her time... Or age. Whatever. Amnesia, right?]

[Now she's thinking too, however, looking around sharply.]

There has to be a sign or directory somewhere, right? Come on, let's go then.

[Reaching over, she takes his hand in hers and starts to tug him along.]

Sometimes, I'd imagine? It's not like I really remember...

[He lets himself be dragged along without protest, looking around as they make their way through the building, keeping an eye out for "employees only" signs.]

--ah, over there!

[And she abruptly changes course right for the door.]

Good job! Let's hope it's easy to find their storage... And look, they didn't lock it!

[Probably because no one thought anyone would try to get close to the deadlier-than-usual animals. Well, that works out for them, and she tugs the door open.]

And we'll probably find ways to get to the tanks from here too...

[Well, that's convenient! Yuuri follows her back into the employee area, still peering around to see if there's anything that seems like it will be of use.]

Probably. It wouldn't make sense to have the entrances in the public area...

Since we're looking for two things...

[Finally letting go of his hand, she turns around to face him with her fingers lacing together behind her back.]

Why don't we split up? That way, one of us might find the way to the tanks while the other person finds where they keep rubber things! And we can meet back here in a few minutes. What do you think of that?

What if one of us runs into trouble while we're split up, though?

[What about the buddy system??]

Yuuri....

[She gestures at the two of them.]

Even if we were with each other, the two of us would just be running away anyway.

But look- we have our phones, right? If anything happens, we can call each other! So we won't really be separated, will we? Everything will be okay.

[Wendy does have a point there. It's not like either of them are really going to fight anything on their own, even with each other for backup. Still, he doesn't like the thought of her getting into trouble without anyone around to try to help!]

[But as stubborn as he can be when he's convinced his way is right, he's pretty easily led the rest of the time. He sighs, then nods in agreement.]

Alright. Then... I'll look at the tanks, to see which ones we need to worry about and how to get into them?

Sounds good. You don’t have to worry about doing anything too risky, okay?

[Stepping close, she stands on the tips of her toes and wraps her arms around his middle, patting his back.]

It’s going to be alright, okay, Yuuri? Even if we have to deal with ayakashi, it can’t be really strong if all it’s doing is messing with some fish, can it? All we’ll have to do is be careful, and everything will work out.

[It's weird. When she hugs him, he feels... almost offended by the effort to comfort him. He gets the urge to shove her away, to insist that he doesn't need to be coddled and pitied, and even though he thinks better of it, there's a wall that goes up around him in the form of his polite, slightly forced smile.]

You're right, of course. Just call if you need anything, I'll keep my phone on me.

[It’s not even something she’s thinking about, either. Logically, she knows that Yuuri is taller and an adult, and she sees herself as a child when she looks in the mirror, but… When it comes to her fellow shinki, a part of her brain says that she’s the one who should make sure they’re with some sort of support. Leading, no, but support, sure.]

[Taking a step back, she looks up into that polite face and sighs before letting it drop. Well, as long as he’s not panicking or anything, that’s fine, right?]

I will. Don’t do anything too dumb.

[And with that, she turns on her heel and bolts off down one hall.]

I'll do my best not to.

[The reply is a little dry, but not enough to really be in any way confrontational. Hadn't she just said how smart he probably was with his glasses, after all?]

[Yuuri turns and goes the other way, keeping close to the tanks, trying not to fidget too much with the phone in his pocket.]
