TEST DRIVE # 12



Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.



Daring Drinks

A couple of local bars are going out of their way to make new and interesting drinks for their customers to try, in a long-standing war between the two bars. Of course, they're going a little off the rails, so there are some very interesting - and somewhat scary - combinations popping out of the woodworks. And they want everyone passing by to try them.

Electric Eels

An odd ayakashi is causing some of the eels at the local aquarium to become literally electric, causing the eels to shock the other inhabitants in their tanks. This is causing a pretty big uproar and if it isn't fixed soon, someone could die or the aquarium might even just shut down entirely.

Frog Friend

Large frogs are popping up all over the place and following people around. They don't seem malicious in any way, but they are kind of creepy to look at, brightly colored, and leave trails of slippery goo wherever they stand. Oh, and they like to jump at people and knock them over, just for fun.

Gaseous Grandpas

A local home for older men is having a problem with a number of their inhabitants where they literally cannot stop farting and belching. It turns out this is the work of an ayakashi that just thinks farts and burps are funny and knows it's easier to get those sorts of things out of old people. Help the poor old guys out, would you?

Horrifying Hentai

Many known otaku in the area are dealing with a rather terrifying problem - every hentai they watch lately comes into reality very suddenly. Sometimes this means cute, begging girls, sure, but it also means tentacles and aliens and a whole rash of other things too. You'll have to stop the ayakashi that is bringing these 'fantasies' to life in order to save these guys.

Daring Drinks

[Alcohol is, of course, a point of pride for the Battle-Maiden, she who kept company with the Aesir in Asgard. The Valkyrie's interest in these new drinks, then, had been mostly out of pride.]

[Her eminently stoic persona, though, appears to have cracked just the slightest as she regards the mug in her hands with an elegantly-arched eyebrow.]

Why is it smoking?


Horrifying Hentai

[The Valkyrie materializes in a ripple of energy, landing lightly on the ground as she lifts her sword.] Ayakashi! Your presence shall be suffered here no longer! I --

[The stares throw her off. The stares of everyone assembled, who are regarding her not with the awe and reverence due a goddess of battle, but of wide-eyed shock and no small amount of perversion.]

[Lenneth spares a glance down at herself, and her 'new' battle uniform -- a sailor fuku, which is both alarmingly tight around the chest and threatens to reveal her choice in undergarments with the slightest motion of her legs.]

...I am not this sort of goddess.

Dry ice!

[And this shinki sounds so excited about it!]

[...He may have been partaking of the drinks for quite a while already now. That would certainly explain the pink flush all over his face.]

It chills the drink faster than the normal stuff, and it looks dramatic, right? Ah, but even if there's only a little bit of it, you shouldn't drink it until the smoke's all gone.

Dry ice. [If she had been confused before, now she is skeptical in a fashion more like irritation.] So this drink has been infused with some sort of magical creation. And they serve it to ordinary people on the street?

Magic?

[Okay, so technically he can do shinki magic stuff now, but that's different, it's not, like, magic-magic.]

No, it's science, I'm pretty sure -- it's, um, the stuff that's in the air you breathe out when you breathe, except when it's cold it turns solid like ice, but when you heat it up it doesn't melt into a liquid, it turns right from a solid to a gas. So it makes that smoke!

[He doesn't remember going to college, but that's the vague impression left over from the science gen ed classes he doesn't actually remember!]

[For one moment, Lenneth's look has all the withering anger of a battle-goddess who feels she is being made sport of... but she relents. This is a strange world which asks her to accept much. Why should the very air not be condensed into smoke and vapor for amusement?]

I still am not sure I understand the difference between science and magic. Both ask to complete the impossible.

Maybe it's the same thing, but it just depends how much you know about why it happens?

[Whoa. That thought is blowing Yuuri's drunken little mind.]

And yet implements of science are used casually by those who know nothing of the mechanics behind it, much as lesser wizards cast spells for results they do not understand.

[If this is a ridiculously heavy conversation to come out of a smoking drink, well, the Valkyrie is a heavy and somber person.]

[Whatever he was before he died, it definitely wasn't a chemist or physicist, but he's not totally clueless!]

Enough to know it's not dangerous if you don't touch it with bare skin or breathe the smoke. People mostly just use it to keep stuff really cold, or to do cool-looking tricks like this?

Well. [She regards her mug, from which vapor no longer streams, then slams back its contents in one long chug. She is, after all, used to the meadhalls of Asgard.]

Mmm. The effect was not worth the drink.

You were probably overthinking it. I bet another drink would help with that!

[It's sure keeping him from thinking about anything!]

You sound like Thor... any time someone nearby used a word with more than one syllable.

[Still, she can accept the logic as being worthy of Valhalla, and reaches for the next drink offering being passed around -- only to find herself staring at a thick concoction that looks for all the world like thick red mud.]

What have they done to this drink...

Well, Thor sounds like fun, then!

[Yuuri when he's sober is an entirely different beast, but right now, "fun" is easily his top priority.]

[He peers at the new drink as someone passes him one, too, and alright, that one definitely looks pretty questionable even to him when he's this drunk.]

Okay, this one I've got no clue about. Some kind of jello shot, maybe...?

[He does the sensible thing, and pokes it. Poke poke poke. Well, it's probably not going to kill him if the bar served it, right...?]

Thor is an overmuscled blowhard who has yet to out-drink me.

[Can we say it again? Asgardian goddess. Even as unemotional as she usually is, drinking is part of life. And on that same philosophy, she takes a pull of this new drink.]

[Her entire body shudders, and she bangs it down on the bar hard, like she can't get it away from her fast enough.] Chocolate, coffee, and cinnamon!?

[Ruri looks at the drink, then Lenneth, then tilts her head. With her usual emotionless expression she sniffs a bit then nods.]

"It is being poured over dry ice to remove everything but the alcoholic vapor. In theory people say that consuming alcohol like that leads to fewer calories but in reality it just means the vapor bypasses the liver and goes immediately into the blood."

[Ruri then looks at the bartender]

"No, I'm too young to imbibe, but if you have some tea I'd take that."

[She absorbs this information thoughtfully, not entirely certain she understands, then turns her gaze back down to her mug.]

So it is merely a gimmick, then. I do not know if I should be pleased it is not dangerous, or offended that the alcohol has been so compromised.

"Well it is a gimmick used to get people intoxicated faster, and in trendier ways. Honestly it is a waste of good science."

[Ruri shrugs a bit then gets her tea]

"But it is flashy I guess and people like flashy."

It seems dishonorable. [Drinking contests, after all, are a fine tradition in Valhalla. A gimmick to get drunk faster defeats the whole purpose.] And is it not bad for the bar to exhaust its patrons' tolerance more quickly?

"People are more likely to buy food if intoxicated, and at least in Japan more money is made off of food sales in some types of bars than alcohol. Or at least that is what it was like on my Earth, I'm not legally old enough to drink here."

[With that she shrugs a bit. Most of her knowledge comes from helping run a food cart in parks for a bit, but the theory is sound.]

Humankind is a curious group. [She doesn't understand and isn't certain how she is supposed to understand.] Interacting with them this directly... is not the role I prefer.

It isn't the role I prefer either, but I remind myself everyone is an idiot in their own way and sometimes it helps.

You don't look like a computer technician, how did you avoid them before you came here?

I dwelt in Asgard.

I haven't heard of that colony. I'm guessing you are from ahead of this point in time too?

Colony? [Her voice actually hits a note of sincere surprise, not usual for the reserved woman.] Asgard is the real of the gods.

....Oh.

There were no gods where I come from, this place shouldn't be too different then, we can go back to the god realm at the temples. Still makes me uncomfortable doing anything like that.

Colonies are cities in space from where I come from, or when. It is complicated. They usually have names like the one you gave, I just never considered historical context.
