TEST DRIVE # 05

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Ugly Underthings

Someone or something has been stealing underwear from various women and men. The weirdest thing about it, though, is the fact that every piece of underwear stolen and strewn about the town is absolutely hideous to look at. Maybe it's just someone with a fetish for ugly underpants? Or maybe it's something else entirely.

Validated Villain

There's talk about some masked ayakashi wandering around, led by a young girl wearing a paper crown and covered in tattoos. In fact, if you look for her hard enough, you might just come across the nora, singing to herself as she plays with the masked wolves. Otherwise, you might just encounter the wolves. It's hard to tell which is worse.

Weeaboo Weirdos

A much larger amount of American tourists are crashing down on Japan now that the summer is near, and a significant number of them are what the people back in their home country would term a 'weeaboo' - 13- to 17-year-olds who are desperate to blend in with Japanese culture and fail miserably at their attempts. You can either make fun of them or help them out, your choice.

Xeroxing Xenophobes

Of course, that means that there are a large number of Japanese locals who are very put off and angry about these Americans. A fact that is becoming all the more prevalent because there is an ayakashi cloning itself and attaching to only Japanese people, turning them against the foreigners and causing a massive amount of hate, which is leading to a lot of shoving, nasty words, and a couple of impromptu, awful haircuts...

Yummy Yakitori

With so much going on, isn't it just nice to sit back, relax, and eat some delicious yakitori? This yakitori might possibly be the best you have ever eaten in your entire life! And that's not at all because it was made by a couple of Far Shore residents who have charmed it with varying results, definitely not. Hopefully the charm doesn't backfire and make you hate all other food!

[Bingo! She's getting pretty good at figuring this out.]

I'm a shinki.

[Not much more to elaborate on there, she thinks. It's not like she has any anecdotes to share and she only just arrived so she doesn't have many new memories to share yet either. It's not worth being sad over; she just needs more experience so she has more to talk about.]

So which god are you?

[She points her skewer at him briefly before taking another bite.]

Tajimamori. I look after sweets.

[He grins at her, and takes another bite.] Well, hey, good to meet you! How're you settling in so far?

Nice to meet you, too, Tsuzuki-san!

[Eri grins back.]

It's been really easy! Like way easy. I wonder why.

[It's hard not to be curious about her past when it's a giant blank slate. The other Far Shore residents seem to be having more trouble adjusting than she's had so far. Who or what was she before to be this comfortable living in a realm of the dead? It's a mystery, one she's finding a growing desire within herself to solve.]

Who knows? Hey, it's better easy than tough, though, right?

[Maybe she had psychic powers before she died? Or she just didn't have a lot going on in her life to tie her back to it. There's a million reasons a newly dead soul might find it easy to settle in.

It's still sad for him to see people her age in the afterlife, though. What is she, barely twenty? If that?]

You know... I'm gonna get another plate of those.

[He pats his pockets, extracts his wallet, and steps over to get in line.]

Okay! I'll be here!

[Eri might get another order later, too, because they are good. Well, if she has enough money. Her god provides well enough for her but she's used to going her own way and taking care of herself. She doesn't really like being a burden so she does her best to make herself as little of one as possible.

She continues munching on her yakitori while she waits for Tsuzuki to return. He's right, though. It is a good thing that it's not as tough for her, even if she doesn't understand the reason. But even so, she wishes she knew more about where she came from.]

[Tsuzuki comes trotting back over in a few minutes,fresh box of skewers in hand.]

Hey -- since I stole one of yours...

[He holds it out.]

Want one?

I'll bring the rest of them back home with me.

[Eri takes it with a smile.]

And now we're even!

[Except for the slapping him on the wrist part, anyway. She still owes him for that.]

Where's home?

[It comes out a little more philosophical sounding than intended.]

For me? The Far Shore. I've got a place there for me and my shinki.

Your god should have one, too. You can travel there through any shrine on this plane, and once you're over there, just get your god to teleport you over.

[He looks briefly thoughtful.]

... You know, I'm not sure if shinki can teleport. I never asked anyone.

Hmm, I wonder if we can! It'd be nice to not have to rely on my god to teleport me.

[The whole idea of not being able to go where she wants when she wants doesn't really sit well with Eri. What if she gets in the mood for exploring and her god isn't? Is she supposed to just sit around and wait?]

Maybe if I can't other gods could...

[Surely Eri could find someone to sweettalk when she wanted to go somewhere if that's the case.]

You can always walk! It just takes longer that way.

[He laughs, cheerfully, and opens up the box without thinking about it, reaching for another skewer. They're just so good. He can't resist.]

Or you could bum a ride off one of us, sure.

Changed your mind about taking the rest home with you?

[Her tone's light and teasing. It doesn't make any difference to her whether he eats them all now or takes them home. She can't really blame him for wanting more now. They're really delicious!]

I don't mind walking! But sometimes it's nice to have company when wandering!

[Did she travel often before? Alone or with others? It feels like she probably did. Eri can't imagine why she'd be restless after death but not in life.]

Huh?

[...he's eating chicken, isn't he.]

-- Whoops! I guess I wasn't thinking about it.

[He laughs, embarrassed. Well he can't put this one back in the box now! He'll just have to eat it! And then stop at one. Yeah.]

It's always nicer to have company, isn't it?

[Eri chuckles.]

I think company's pretty nice most of the time! But sometimes it's good to spend time alone, too! Just focus on being with yourself, you know?

[As much as Eri enjoys company, she enjoys solitude just as much. Sometimes she just needs to be alone to collect and sort through her thoughts.]

How you treat yourself is important, too! So I try to do nice things for myself.

[For some reason, she feels a strong need to do that sort of thing. Maybe when she was alive, she had to? She just doesn't know. The mystery's driving her a little crazy. Why is she the way she is?]
