Test Drive #26
Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:
1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!
Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.
Ayakashi generally have a particular method by which to hurt humans. But an ayakashi has appeared that seems to be completely random in its methods, and anyone merely being near it becomes a target of its malevolence in a variety of ways. Dispatch this vagrant ayakashi before it harms far too many people.
Hitchhiking in Japan is rare. A friendly but lost-looking foreigner on the side of the road will attract fascination, concern and compassion. But a Japanese person doing the same likely won’t attract the same positive attention. Yet here is one Japanese person praying for a way to experience the adventure of the hitchhike. What to do for your follower? Well, going as a group of three sounds good, doesn’t it? Just be sure to attract sufficient attention to yourselves so that the drivers will properly notice you!
The X-Games, popular overseas, has suddenly become a hot topic with Japanese competitors taking top spots in skateboarding events. Burning to follow in their wake, young teens have taken to the streets, parks and basically anywhere with a strip of pavement to hone their skateboarding skills (which may or may not exist in the first place). While it’s good to see kids getting away from the computer screen, they’re also becoming a public nuisance: damaging handrails, narrowly missing pedestrians, and making noise right up to sunset. Answer the prayers of the kids yearning for glory? Answer the prayers of those wishing for peace in their neighbourhoods again? (...What’s a ‘skateboard’ anyway?)
An enthusiastic grade-schooler has started a new career helping people find love! She's hooked up teachers, classmates' parents, even random strangers… but it seems like all the matches she's trying to make this month have gone horribly wrong! Is she being stalked by an ayakashi or is this just bad luck? Either way, she needs help getting her mojo back.
In the trendy Ginza area, a mall has set up an elaborate indoor display of lights set to represent the real night sky. The key feature is the evening illumination show, where the various zodiac constellations are lit up to music. Strangely, there are growing rumours that those who view the show become even more focused on their horoscopes (much to the benefit of local fortune tellers). It’s even said that people’s personalities shift to become more stereotypical to their respective signs. Take in the show for yourself and see what happens?

P-pardon me! Could you please help my friends and me? I'm afraid we're a little bit of trouble...
( She's a terrible liar. She hates lying. So she tries to be as vague as possible. Her skittish nature helps because as she stammers what sounds like a distressed story to the driver, he seems to become sympathetic to their cause... Or rather, he seems sympathetic for her and he offers to take only her (because the other two are real weird).... )
Oh... I-I'm sorry but... I can't leave my friends behind...
( And the driver frowns, looking at her friends and... well, that's too bad. And he drives off. )

It's... familiar, the way she trembles under scrutiny and the fear of rejection. He is no longer capable of feeling similar emotions, but he still remembers - that he was the same, once upon a time. ]
I'll do it.
[ Add has already made him promise not to kill unnecessarily, so he supposes he has to resolve this in another way. Hopefully mortals will see his face as someone wearing an eyepatch; surely attention-grabbing as he tries to hail down another car.
This one is smaller, driven by a couple. Before the hitchhiker can start spouting his firm belief in adventure, Ain pushes his way (gently) to the windown and tries to impress on them the need for these three oddballs to get to a reasonable town before nightfall. He is careful to keep his voice stable (and human), calling upon fragments of an earnest honesty that he remembers he used to have.
Hopefully, this will work. ]

She takes a breath, looking back at her new friends with an anxious sort of courage. )
W-we'll try again. ( She won't cry. She won't cry. Ah, her voice is trembling just a little, ) We'll... we'll find someone better.
( She's certain. Or at least, she hopes so. And their hitchhiking friend agrees with her and insists everything will be okay and that surely this one just wasn't meant to be! And Ain.... he only says he'll do it? She has no idea what he means by that and as they wait, each second feels like a minute and every minute feels like an hour and.... when will another car come? Had she really ruined their only chance?
Another car comes and where she hesitates, Ain acts. The couple glance around Ain's shoulder and they see a smiling and optimistic stranger with... a girl who looks terribly afraid and like she could cry at any moment. The woman whispers something to her husband and they seem to discuss the situation between themselves before the man unlocks the back door and tells them to get in. )
Oh, thank you! Thank you so much!
( She hadn't realized she'd been holding her breath and now that she's able to let it go, she feels relieved. They ahdn't messed up! They'd done it! Or rather, Ain had.
And now they're going to have to squeeze into the single back row of this car. Sakura will sit in the middle since she's the smallest of the three and... well, the entire ride, she's just quiet. Absolutely quiet as she looks down at her hands, folded in her lap, firm and anxious. The woman looks back at first to tell Sakura everything will be all right and the next town is close. But like all Near Shore residents, she soon forgets her most anxious passenger and instead, seems perfectly content to ignore their chattering, strange friend. About five minutes into their drive, Sakura takes advantage of their lack of presence and whispers quietly to Ain, )

So, there would be no need to speak. He thanks the couple, then fixes his singular gaze on the back of the front passenger seat, looking through the headrest to an indeterminate distance forward.
However, he turns to face Sakura when she speaks to him, his hair echoing the movement and half-pooling on his lap. He watches her for a few seconds, his iris glowing faintly in the dim car and highlighting the ring-like pattern inscribed into it.
In a similarly quiet voice: ]
It's okay.
[ It might not... quite be what she's looking for, but his gaze softens a little; hopefully enough to compensate for his lack of emotion otherwise.
He knows how fear and anxiety can eat at a person until they are completely consumed by it; a horrible fate that should not be visited upon a girl that had did nothing wrong. So, to correct something that feels completely unacceptable to him, he will say what needs to be said.
Good thing none of the humans notice them. ]

With an impulsive ticket purchase, the stranger dashes off to catch a spontaneous train and... )
Well.... that's that, isn't it? ( Though she seems to be improving, it's obvious her mind is still on what happened earlier. ) Thank goodness.
( She's so relieved this is over. )
A-and.... ( She takes a step back, folding her hands neatly in front of her and gives Ain a quick and proper bow, ) Thank you again, f-for your help.

He only moves when she bows, taking a single step forward so that he can gently pat her on the shoulder, just once. ]

[ He had heard these words uttered on a street a few days ago, and it cut into his newly-formed memory for a reason he no longer understands. ]

( Ah, that sounded... a lot more emotional than she'd meant it to. She'd reminded herself of a child throwing a tantrum just now, the way she'd raised her voice so suddenly. Realizing this, she looks away, )
I'm sorry. It's just that... w-we wouldn't have gotten here at all if it weren't for you. All I did... was lose us an opportunity and... I couldn't even speak up w-when he said those things...

Yet, she still protests. He watches her with a half-lidded eye, willing words to assemble themselves together in his mind - the process takes about half a minute. ]
No need to apologize. [ The shinki tries his best to sound less threatening, though he only results in using a softer, wispy tone. ] You did your best. That is.... what matters....
