TEST DRIVE # 26



Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters!
Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Volatile Vagrant

Ayakashi generally have a particular method by which to hurt humans. But an ayakashi has appeared that seems to be completely random in its methods, and anyone merely being near it becomes a target of its malevolence in a variety of ways. Dispatch this vagrant ayakashi before it harms far too many people.

Warm Wanderlust

Hitchhiking in Japan is rare. A friendly but lost-looking foreigner on the side of the road will attract fascination, concern and compassion. But a Japanese person doing the same likely won’t attract the same positive attention. Yet here is one Japanese person praying for a way to experience the adventure of the hitchhike. What to do for your follower? Well, going as a group of three sounds good, doesn’t it? Just be sure to attract sufficient attention to yourselves so that the drivers will properly notice you!

X-Games X-out


The X-Games, popular overseas, has suddenly become a hot topic with Japanese competitors taking top spots in skateboarding events. Burning to follow in their wake, young teens have taken to the streets, parks and basically anywhere with a strip of pavement to hone their skateboarding skills (which may or may not exist in the first place). While it’s good to see kids getting away from the computer screen, they’re also becoming a public nuisance: damaging handrails, narrowly missing pedestrians, and making noise right up to sunset. Answer the prayers of the kids yearning for glory? Answer the prayers of those wishing for peace in their neighbourhoods again? (...What’s a ‘skateboard’ anyway?)


Youthful Yente

An enthusiastic grade-schooler has started a new career helping people find love! She's hooked up teachers, classmates' parents, even random strangers… but it seems like all the matches she's trying to make this month have gone horribly wrong! Is she being stalked by an ayakashi or is this just bad luck? Either way, she needs help getting her mojo back.


Zodiac Zenith

In the trendy Ginza area, a mall has set up an elaborate indoor display of lights set to represent the real night sky. The key feature is the evening illumination show, where the various zodiac constellations are lit up to music. Strangely, there are growing rumours that those who view the show become even more focused on their horoscopes (much to the benefit of local fortune tellers). It’s even said that people’s personalities shift to become more stereotypical to their respective signs. Take in the show for yourself and see what happens?

A lot of people seem to believe in their horoscopes..Umm.are you familiar with those? Those signs that represent certain birthdates? Some people give out...fortunes, I guess, and other stuff for each one that tells a person what might happen to them. They talk about personalities too..and what's lucky or what's not for them.

[Alex had seen some on newspapers and online, and she had to admit that they were interesting, but it wasn't something she personally believed in.]

Though..I think the display should be the biggest appeal. I haven't seen one like it before.

[She was rather excited for that actually, even if it was manmade rather than the actual night sky.]

I can't say that I am familiar with the concept. There are parts of it that sound alike to what little I recall, but the specifics are entirely new to me.

[Ryoma was also not a particularly superstitious man. He had a respect and understood why some people would put their faith in fate and the unknown... but he held reaching out and taking control of one's own destiny as equally important. You couldn't blame others for your misfortunes if you weren't willing to try to correct them.]

I admit, the idea of a recreation of the night sky is a strange one--but it is a bit exciting to think of, especially if it looks close to nature. Though I do wonder if something more sinister is afoot with the rumors being spread about this show...

[You damn kids and your newfangled technologies. Back in Ryoma's day, you have to walk outside to get cursed by the stars.]

[ "A foot". That wasn't a saying you heard often. But there was something familiar about the way he spoke....Ah, it was a lot like her previous shinki. That formal and somewhat aged way of speaking. Maybe that's why she felt more comfortable than usual.]

It's..a lot harder to see it properly nowadays....Especially in the city. The first time I saw so many stars was when I was brought to the far shore. I never realized how many stars there really were before then.

[It almost became a new hobby, just sitting up on the roof of her temple or walking around just to look up at the stars.]

It may not be the same, but technology is pretty amazing here.

[And ayakashi were able to adapt to that somehow. It was surprising to think that something as mythical sounding as ayakashi could affect technology.

The lights began to dim, cueing the start of the show.]

Do..you remember when your birthday is?

[She knew shinki usually didn't but Alex had also heard that some have been regaining memories.]

[Look, just because Ryoma has been approximately fifty years old since the age of twelve doesn't make him antiquated. It just makes him... proper. Distinguished.

A jumbotron is a monument to man's arrogance and not to be trusted.]

It seems so strange that the skies are always so cloudy, though I can't quite place why I think that.

[Maybe the skies had been clearer before...? No, no, Ryoma didn't need to think about that. This world was strange and wonderful and yo-yo'd rapidly between one extreme and the other. Ryoma prided himself on being able to adapt as best as he could.]

Technology is... something. Too powerful, I sometimes find myself thinking.

[Then again, the microwave was a delight as much as it was a mystery. The thought left Ryoma, frivolous and fleeting as he lifts his head to watch for the show, eyes narrowed as he glanced between the display and the crowd. If there was any disparity, any strangeness... he hoped to see it.]

My...? Oh, I'm afraid not.

[Not yet, anyway. Perhaps someday, if fate was kind... or cruel, depending on what sort of memory came with birthdays.]

[Alex watched him as he spoke, taking in his expression and the way he spoke. It seemed like there remnants of his memories were there, but he was unable to dig them out just yet. She was curious about the world he came from, as she's learned lately that there were so many out there. Ryoma seemed like someone who had some kind of powerful position..a leader of some kind. Maybe one who had seen many battles. Most likely a traditional setting, considering his speech patterns. He was like a figure out of a story book--or maybe a history book.]

Mm..I think..it can be different kinds of powerful..depending who uses it..

[As was anything humans laid their hands on.]

Ah..then maybe we won't get affected by our "signs".

[Despite being a god, Alex didn't have most of her memories herself, although this happened before she arrived at the far shore. Maybe it was a convenience in this case, if their awareness was a requirement for the curse.

Like Ryoma, she took to looking around at the other people here. So far, things seemed to be going peacefully, people staring up at the show in awe and wonder. Some started to point at their particular constellation, excited to have spotted it. And then she started to hear some arguing.

It was a couple she had seen earlier on, but they were getting along just fine at the time. Now they were acting like cats and dogs. Was this just a typical fight, or was this one of the effects? There was a thing about horoscopes and sign compatibility.]
