TEST DRIVE # 23

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters!
Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Gross Garbage

Waste removal has become an intense process in many cities in Japan. Because the sorting of different trash can be very complicated, some residents just end up saying to heck with it. However, the neighbours are vigilant, and heap curses upon those who break the rules. Putting out the wrong thing on the wrong day, mixing plastics with the burnables, putting out the biodegradables the night before, which attracts crows that scatter the rotting food all over the place… the infractions are many.
Will you join in cursing the ones who can’t follow the rules, or perhaps instead gracefully try to mend their ways?

Honoured Helper

For the last 20 years, Hanako has worked faithfully at her cleaning job, 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, without a single day off.
The momentous achievement was celebrated with her coworkers, but it was unanimous among them that Hanako really should take some time off! But the woman is stubborn, and is completely unwilling to take the time offered. (What would she do with herself, even?)
All her friends and coworkers can do is pray that someone can convince her to take a well-earned rest… It might take some heavenly intervention.

Ingenious Insects

While crows are famous for being clever, there seems to be an insect following in their footsteps. Rhinoceros beetles have been getting in everywhere. It’s late in their lifespan and people are generally hoping the lot of them die off soon, but in the meantime people have been coming home to find the large beetles getting into every room, even when they’re carefully closed up. Probably the only ones thrilled with this are kids who like to collect the bugs for fighting matches.
Residents of the Far Shore will be able to see that there are beetle-like ayakashi running with the mundane ones, and they seem to be on the hunt for something.
Try to figure it out, protect the kids who might mistake an ayakashi for a real rhinoceros beetle, or kill every bug ~~with fire~~?

Jilted John

John’s girlfriend Julie says she loves him, but she’s up and left for another guy named Gordon. Julie is cruel, heartless, a slut and a bitch! Gordon thinks he’s tough (so what if he’s bigger, better looking and more trendy than John) but he’s actually a moron, a cheap creep and a puff!
John is now desperately wanting someone to deck Gordon the moron good. Preferably smashing his face in. Help Jilted John out?

King’s Keeper

King Koopa, a stout, shorthaired two-year-old tabby, is headed straight for YouTube fame as a video-game-playing cat. Or he was, until, just last week, he completely lost interest in the keyboard. His desperate owner has been trying everything: bird screensavers, a catnip mouse, even treats hidden in the keys... but nothing brings back Koopa's love of the game. Is he just camera shy? Feeling blue? His owner needs divine intervention to help teach a young cat his old trick!

[ Gross Garbage ]

[ Orihime is no stranger to the complications of garbage day. In fact, she has a very detailed chart at home that she made to remind her of the basics. Her preparedness doesn't seem to have helped her in this mission though. Even once she's recreated her trash day instructions, she isn't making much progress.

She's already covered in Garbage, thanks to her efforts. There are coffee grounds smeared across her shirt, slimy papers stuck to the bottom of one of her shoes, and a banana peel somehow sticking out of the back of her hair. She's had a few run ins with crows along the way, so she looks pretty worse for wear.

She's not giving up though! After realizing she can't clean up the mess by herself, she's taken to educating others on the proper trash day procedures. Or well, she's trying anyway. She's heading to the houses that seem the most plagues with the problem, and she's coming off like an unwanted solicitor almost. ]

Ah-- I'm sorry! I didn't mean to accuse anyone, I just wanted to show you this chart for trash days to make it easier! I can clean up the mess, so--

[ She jumps, breaking off and wincing as another door is slammed in her face. ]

[ Ingenious Insects ]

[ One might find Orihime out on this nice day, staring intently at a tree trunk. Upon closer inspection, she's actually inspecting a pair of large beetles rather closely. She's so focused, there are actually beads of sweat forming on her forehead. Unfortunately though, she still hasn't run across an ayakashi yet. This will probably become evident once she takes a step back, gasping and point an accusing finger at one of the bugs. ]

There! Did you see it?! Mr. Sadaharu definitely tried to snub Mr. Yuuchou! Heh, I knew I was good at detecting evil! He isn't a good friend at all.

[ King's Keeper ]

[ Orihime is pretty excited about the task at hand, because it isn't every day you get to sit down with a celebrity and actually help them out of a tough spot! She's already a pretty big fan of King Koopa, so that's why she looks just a little nervous as she sits across the table from him.

Once he's all settled in his comfortable chair, she stands, and holds up a decently sized sketchpad she's prepared for the task. ]

Good Morning Mr. Koopa! [ She bows deeply to the cat before she straightens up and fumbles with the papers. Then she clears her throat, doing her best attempt at a professional and business-like voice. ] My name is Inoue Orihime, and I'm happy to meet you. I hope you'll enjoy my presentation!

[ She flips open to the first page, showing a drawing she's made with Koopa in an astronaut's suit, ready to board a space shuttle as hundreds of fans cheer him on. ]

I know you might be tired of fame already, but just think about where this job can lead! You'll gain so many fans that they will have to offer you a job as an astronaut! Your fans will be so excited and they'll stand behind you all the way!

[ She smiles serenely, pointing to the visual aid before she prepares to flip to the next (probably totally unrelated) picture... ]

[ It takes Orihime a moment or two to work up the courage to slide up next to Kagaho so she can lean in and whisper to him. ]

Excuse me, but um... Aren't we supposed to convince Miss Hanako to take a break?

[ She's smiling somewhat nervously and really hoping he takes it as the helpful suggestion it was meant to be. She doesn't want to give anyone the wrong impression on her first attempt to help with a mission. ]

[ Another Shinki to the rescue! ...maybe

Rikku's spent the last few minutes just silently watching Rei stalk. She's kind of surprised this girl has the patience. Then again, she's surprised she's spent so long spectating. She should probably help out or something. ]

Hey there! Figured out your battle plan yet?

[ She waves cheerfully from her perch. She's been crouching on a low garden wall this whole time. Hopefully her big mouth didn't frighten the prey away. ]

[He's doing it again, and the worst part is that he doesn't even realize what he's doing... or why she hates it.

And he never will.]

Your attitude is making me doubt your devotion, John.

[If John was going to be irritated with someone, let it be her. He wasn't a threat, and she was unwilling to let Adrien sacrifice himself for her again.]

If you love her at all, I suggest you stop acting like an entitled child who's just lost his favorite toy and start acting like an adult. Talk to her. Write her a poem. Do something. It probably won't bring her back to fall into your arms, but stranger things have happened. And leave Gordon alone.

Ssh.

[ Rei dips her head, trying to hide better....But it seems like the bug isn't onto them yet.

She sidles close to where Rikka's perching, the better to speak in a low voice. ] It's looking for something. Don't move too quickly.

[ After all, they might not get a chance to find out what the bug is really after if they catch it too soon. And if there's a bigger problem out there, better to address that than the symptoms. ]

Honoured Helper: my breathing code is binary

[Of all the God's summoned, Hanako's friends call the one Goddess that isn't really a living being, can really get tired like a human or even human in origin. But does mean well enough.]

Hanako, have you thought about what hobbies you have or maybe you have those that are blood related to you that haven't seen you in ages. Perhaps you should see them.

[The advice is good, but it comes from a voice and a face with zero emotion as they give the advice. Maybe a Shinki could help.]

Ingenious Insects: everybody's looking for something

[The way Nona can tell from the beetle-like Ayakashi from the real ones is the fact the real beetles allow her to to 'talk' to them. The Ayakashi, as expected don't. So it's easy to coax one out a random child's hand while asking to see about it, and crushes in her hand.]

There, you are safe.

[All the child saw was a strange lady taking his prize Beetle and killing it. So he cries. Nona is a bit confused and turns to her shinki.]

The subject is confused, why is the child crying?

King's Keeper: can't find the password

[While making a housecall to this person, she asks for some 'private time' with King Koopa. And she allows him to come to her and tell her about all his problems. She tells the owner to come back in and she sits there stroking the chubby cat in her lap.]

Koopa tells the subject he doesn't really feel the love for video games that he once had. He tells me there's a lot of things going on with you. Would you feel fine telling about that?

[Her emotionless tone doesn't really sell it, so she may need a bit of help.]

If it's not responding to physical attention, it probably needs treats to reinforce the behaviors like any animal.

[Obviously, so he thinks.

Yoon has no idea who Lili is, he was just asked to help out.]

I'll bet his owner started with that and then stopped giving rewards, so the cat stopped doing those weird gestures for their photo.

[Camera. He means camera.]

[His eyes flick to the side, just enough to get a glimpse of her out of the corner of his eye, and he smirks.]

She'll rest when she's dead.

[It sounds particularly mean-spirited when he says it, but in truth it's not so different from some of the things Hanako has said herself.]

[For a moment, it looks like he might actually reach out to comfort the kid and a kind of suppressed sadness lingers in his eyes, but Kagaho's arms stay firmly crossed. When he speaks, his tone is far from kind.]

Stop crying. It was going to get squashed eventually anyway, kid. That's life.

[That only makes things worse, of course. Kagaho looks back at Nona.]

He got too attached to the bug. You taught him an important lesson.

That's the guy that made the actual prayer.

[ It was certainly Judar's to have this John guy get the shit knocked out of him, though. Even that was far too below him because this creep wasn't worth the effort. ]

I've decided this prayer is way too below me to get finished.

[ To think, Izumo thought this would be an easy one to get his shinki to do. That everything would go nice and easy and he wouldn't have to worry about watching Judar all the time. ]

Who'd wanna encourage a worm like this?

Are you sure? If we just smash all of 'em then we're done, right?

[ Rikku has lowered her voice, but it seems like she has to really work to keep it that way. She's excited about the idea of getting rid of the bugs quickly and heading back home. ]

That would be way faster!

[ They can deal with the bigger problem when it's huge and obvious! ]

But!!

[ She moves in front of him now, her nervousness forgotten in her zeal to explain the possible horrors of not doing the job correctly. ]

What if Miss Hanako can't rest when she dies?! Maybe when she gets older she'll realize she should have spent time on hobbies or finding love, then she'll die with regrets and start haunting this business! At first it'll be simple things like the lights flickering or items just moving to the wrong spot. But eventually she'll start possessing people and making the walls bleed!

[ It's true, she saw it in a movie once. And she's flailing dramatically as she tells the tale, to emphasize just how dire it is. ]

The business would fail! They would have to spend years apologizing to Miss Hanako's ghost before they could reopen!

Gross Garbage
[ He would probably scold the people who broke the rules if he actually understood everything about this. But he doesn't, so he doesn't.

Instead, he knows that this is things people don't need any more and he's not afraid of getting a little dirty and, well, there are so many strange things here. ]

Hey, what's this?

[ Asked about just about every little thing, because he's from That sort of time. ]

Ingenious Insects
[ Again, Carvajal is a little distracted. Not that he doesn't want to help, oh no, on the contrary; he loves helping people! But there are so many strange things going on and these kids said that they would show him how to fight with beetles. ]

Ah, not that one, it looks a little ill, don't you think?

[ But he can at least warn the children from taking the ayakashi beetles, even if he doesn't actually say that they're ayakashi (mainly because he can't pronounce it and secondly because it would probably make the children more interested instead). ]

King's Keeper
Your majesty, I've heard that you're the one to ask if one wants to learn about those biideo games, do you think you can teach me?

[ Koopa, of course, is not impressed with this strangely dressed person who can't even pronounce "video" right, and gives him the judgmental look that only a cat can give a person. ]

Gross Garbage
[ Kuga doesn't really know why he cares. Why should he care about some garbage rules being broken? It has nothing to do with him. Fact still stands that he does apparently care (even though he keeps asking himself why) and that's why he picks up whatever discarded trash bag he just saw dumped, and after a tap to the culprit's shoulder and a clearing of throat to catch the person's attention, he shoves the garbage bag against their chest. Probably too close to their face for comfort. ]

You do~ know that littering is a crime?

I'm not littering, the trash goes there.

Not this one, not todaaay. You don't want a fine, do you~~~?

[ Why is he acting like he could give the culprit a fine? (Because once upon a time, he could)? After a few moments, the culprit retreats but it's not because of his words, it's because of the somewhat crazy look in his eyes. ]

Honoured Helper
Just let the woman work if she wants to~~. It's not like not taking a vacation's gonna kill heeer.

[ Says the guy who worked himself to death. He's in no position to speak, to be honest, and the bags under his eyes might tell a little of that. ]

Jilted John
[ So childish... Anyway, it's none of his business, and this time he actually doesn't care so, he's not going to do anything. Instead, he just tells the Jilted John to "just do it yourself, wimp" and turns to whoever else from the Far Shore that was there. And cheerfully shoves a pocky stick in their mouth, because they totally wanted one, right? ]

Let's do something more fun that doesn't have anything to do with idiots who think they're broken-hearted~~~?

[ Rei holds up a hand in a "stop" motion. She either is too busy watching the bug to disprove that approach or she doesn't know where to begin pointing out the flaws. ] It's moving.

[ Yata rolls his eyes. And then gestures at the other guy. Jilted John's so-called rival. ]

Who cares about the worm? Just punch the peacock. I mean, look at that dude. He's just asking to be punched anyway.

[ He's not about to go and bruise his own knuckles for this kind of menial work. ]

[ The two humans in question seem oblivious to this debate happening over their well-being, but Yata doesn't care, really. Although he's not about to make it too easy on the new guy. ]

This is supposed to be a training session for you, you know.

[ The new guy certainly has an opinion about himself already, however. When he parses out the mass amount of knowledge he has and figures out how to use it, he won't even be standing on the same ground. ]

Well, in my understanding and training so far, I've decided that the prayer isn't worth being answered. There are better things worth my time, and I'd rather get other people to do the punching.

[ Apparently you're 'other people' Yata. ]

[ Instead of answering, Yata just takes one step sideways.

And then abruptly shoves Judar into the middle of the argument happening between the two humans - the worm, and the peacock he was supposed to punch. ]

When you get more practice at prayers, then you get to delegate. Shinki don't decide what prayers to take or not to take - our god does. That's the whole point.

[ You know, while Judar might have abs and an overall muscley, if not lean, body... He's not that tough. Enough where the shove was more thane nough to send him in-between the two humans. It knocked him off his feet. Which gets an utter look of disdain sent at Yata with those red eyes. ]

Then he's bad at choosing prayers, or didn't realize what a shitty one this turned out to be.

...What are you doing.

[By the gods, she's still an airhead.]

[ She slumps just a little in reaction to being ignored. But, she still slides off the wall, ready to slowly stalk the bug. Because what else is she going to do? ]

What do you think it's after?

[ Because she's imagining they're going to spend hours tracking it, only for it to end up settling on a garbage can or something. ]

[ She turns her head to face him slowly, smiling widely. ]

Using my powers of deduction to track down the beetle ayakashi!

[ Except for the fact that she's been staring at two completely normal beetles for over an hour. ]
