TEST DRIVE # 03

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Keening Karaoke

For some reason, karaoke clubs have suddenly popped up all over the Heavens. Not only that, but they are the big new hotspot for residents of the Far Shore to hang out at and everyone around you has been pressuring you to join them. Do you continue to fight back or give in to the peer pressure weighing you down?

Little Lies

Everyone believes that white lies do no harm, so the people of the Near Shore are happy to use small lies whenever they need to. Tiny ayakashi have been springing from these little lies and are now teaming up to form into a huge ayakashi, and it keeps getting bigger with every passing moment!

Marriage Madness

With spring in the air, the season of weddings is upon the Near Shore, and boy do the people of Japan seem eager to get married this year. In fact, it's so crazy trying to book anything that there are literally hundreds of prayers being sent up asking for monetary deals as well as luck with finding the right place to marry. Help some poor people out.

Necklace Nuisance

A cursed necklace has sprung up in the city and there are a lot of people dying because of it. The weird thing is that no one who has actually worn the necklace has died, just everyone around them. This cursed necklace has fallen into the hands of a depraved young man who is more than happy to use its bad luck in order to start 'taking out the trash' of the world...

Overt Ogling

As the temperature rises, so do the skirts of teenage girls. Unfortunately, there are a lot of pubescent boys who are more than happy to take a gander whenever they can. Catching some peeping toms, how is a resident of the Far Shore supposed to react? Or even warn the poor girl who's being spied on?

If you're uncertain about anything, feel free to check out the Premise, Rules, and FAQ posts. And don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have on the FAQ!
When and if you're ready to join the game, check out the Taken Characters before throwing in a Reserve and starting on your Application
Have fun!

Oh, I'll practice first. I wouldn't want to take anyone's head off! [Hakkai pulls one finger across his throat in graphic illustration of the idea, and laughs.

Well, it is funny.

He watches the little phantom disappearing into the crowd, probably to cause more havoc, and makes a thoughtful noise as his laughter dies away.]

And I'll have to work with my god, then.
returnedfromtheline: (| you okay with that?)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-06 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yukine grins (only a little awkwardly) at the joke.]

Heh- yah, take it easy on the Near Shore.

[His expression also gets a touch more serious with that topic.]

It's - I think - one of the most important things, for shinki and god to work together well. Are you worried about it?
reformedsinner: (inner debate)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-06 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you find it difficult being a weapon for a stranger to wield? I think I may.

[His tone stays light and conversational, but the expression on his face has faded into a deliberately neutral mask.

It would be easier if he knew his god... if he knew anyone, even himself, but with no memory to guide him the world is filled with strangers.]
returnedfromtheline: (< don't worry about that idiot)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
[LET HIM TELL YOU:] At first it was hell. Honestly, that guy is such an idiot. He tried to act all cool but I could see right through him from the start. And his hands- ugh. His palms are always sweaty, and you can imagine what that feels like when you're being wielded as a sword.

[Yukine pauses his rant to take a deep breath and his expression becomes a bit calmer.]

But you know- it's been difficult, but this life isn't so bad. And it's the only life I know now, anyway.
reformedsinner: (oh myyy)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
You're a sword too?

[Ah! A brother. Hakkai perks up, interested.] I don't think I've properly appreciated my god's lack of sweaty palms.

And it is good to be alive.

[With the proper respect for accuracy, he adds:] That is, to continue to exist.
returnedfromtheline: (> lose myself here)

1/2

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-07 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yukine smiles and nods soundly in agreement with what Hakkai-san was saying. They are shinki, so they must have died still wanting to live. Now, they can live on like this.
Softly he repeats what Yato had said...]

We were given human names. So we should live on as humans...
returnedfromtheline: (/ I can survive anything)

2/2

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-07 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[He then looks up with a fierce expression.]

Appreciate it. From the depth of your heart, be thankful you don't have to deal with gross sweaty palms.

Heh- but yep, I'm two swords, actually. So you turn into a sword too. We have a pretty straight-forward use, don't we. It's kind of nice.
reformedsinner: (sore eye)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Living as a human... Hakkai smiles. There is something special about the idea, isn't it?

He can enjoy that part of all of this.]

Two swords. That sounds confusing! But it is better than having to figure out what I can do.
returnedfromtheline: (o huh totally innocent)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-08 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm? It's not confusing at all. [What could be confusing about being two swords? It just is as it is.]

And if you've got being a sword figured, you can always expand your repertoire. [His hand makes the shape for making borderlines. And- well there is more beyond that too, but better make sure the new shinki can handle the basics first. (No decapitations.)]
reformedsinner: (Default)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-08 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, you'd be splitting yourself into two separate pieces-- if it doesn't bother Yukine, though, maybe it's less strange than Hakkai would expect!]

Yes, I'm certainly going to have to practice the borderlines. Is there anything else we can do?

[He doesn't mind being a sword, exactly.

He just prefers being a fighter.]
returnedfromtheline: (> Hiyori the strict teacher)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-08 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[Indeed he was split into two pieces... (He doesn't remember that part too well though.)]

[Heh, he's pretty eager! Although it'll really just give Yukine a chance to voice what he'd been thinking-]

There's a couple other things, but you have to be stronger and more experienced to handle them well. So it's basics first - and no decapitations.
reformedsinner: (slasher smile)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-08 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll put a little practice into the borderline first, then! I don't want to accidentally decapitate anyone.

[If he's planning to decapitate them, of course, that's different.]

Thank you, senpai. Could we speak after I've mastered this technique?
returnedfromtheline: (/ if this is as bad as it gets)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-09 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
[He's joking about that, right? He'll play the straight-man, sure.]

No intended decapitations either- no harming the Near Shore or humans.

['Senpai'. He can totally get used to being called that.]

Yah, get in touch with me when you want me to take a look at it.
reformedsinner: (elementary my dear dragon)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-09 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that something that the Heavens punish? Harming mortals?

[Not that he wants to make sure it remains on the table, or anything.

That is.

It's just convenient to know it case it ever comes up.]
returnedfromtheline: (| so who *was* trying to kill Yato)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-09 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yukine crosses his arms and thinks about that for a moment.]

You know, I'm not sure what the punishment is, but I've heard it said that when something of the Near Shore gets damaged it's a injustice. So if it's a 'injustice' when a tree gets chopped down or a hole blasted in the road, how much more so is it if a human were harmed.

[Maybe he should be glad he never found out what the punishment for damaging things of the Near Shore is first-hand, give the amount of damage he did on his first job...]
reformedsinner: (foundling)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-09 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That is interesting.

[But, oddly, it doesn't answer the question. Hakkai hums thoughtfully under his breath. Do the gods punish injustice? He can't imagine they do. There's far too much of it that happens unpunished.]

Is Heaven in the business of defending justice, then?
returnedfromtheline: (| don't look behind me)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-09 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
'Defending justice'...

[Yukine grows more serious at that. Of course, it makes him think of the recent incident with Ebisu-sama. He makes a soft noise like a growl in his throat and rubs at his head.]

Honestly? It's frustrating, trying to understand heaven's 'justice' and why they come to the judgements they do.

[He's so drawn in on his thoughts, he almost passes the small shrine. Although the rhythm of his stride is disrupted, he doesn't comment on it and turns to pass under the gate. Taking the golden chain out of his pocket he readies to dump it in the small basin of cleansing water.]

But they do punish.
reformedsinner: (closer look)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-10 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's a different tone in Yukine's voice when he says that, one that catches Hakkai's interest. He looks at the boy, considering, and realizes he's about to toss the cursed necklace into the water.]

Ah! Try pouring it over first. It might pollute the water.

Who did you see them punish?
Edited 2016-04-10 15:00 (UTC)
returnedfromtheline: (| hold back the truth)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-11 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh- Sure. [Good call. Yukine spoons water over the necklace using the wooden ladle.]

That probably does it, but I can't tell if the curse is broken. So I'll take it back to Takamagahara with me too, just in case.

[His dealing with the necklace gives him a moment to collect his thoughts about Hakkai's simple question.]

...They punished Ebisu-sama. If you don't know, he's one of the most popular gods of fortune.

[Just to clarify because some of these shinki are from other worlds, apparently.
Yukine doesn't elaborate more but- if Hakkai-san wants the whole story, there's no reason for him to keep it from him.]
reformedsinner: (inner debate)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-11 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard of him, no.

[Some of these gods are familiar, and some aren't; Hakkai isn't sure yet what makes the difference. That, too, might be a sign about his own past. He'll need to do a little research.]

What did he do? For a popular god to be punished, it must have been something serious.
returnedfromtheline: (| start something)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-11 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It was... well, there was something that I suppose he was rightfully accused of, but there was also something else...

[Putting his hands in his pockets he looks up, lets out a long slow breath, then looks directly at Hakkai-san.]

It's not a short story, even if I abridged things. But I don't mind telling you if you really want to know.
reformedsinner: (sore eye)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-11 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to hear it. If it's a long story, why don't we sit down somewhere?

[They're in a shrine, after all. Hakkai doesn't know how likely it is that another shinki, or a god, might walk by, and while he has no reason to think it would be troublesome for anyone to know he's asking about this, he'd prefer to play it safe.

It's only prudent.

He glances around, and indicates a little coffee and tea shop on the opposite corner.]

We could get something to drink.
returnedfromtheline: (| this is totally insane)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-14 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yukine, on the other hand, sees the invitation at face value: an offer of a drink and a place to sit for a bit while he tells the story.]

Sounds good! 'Specially if you're buying. [He's only half-serious.

Once they are both settled with their orders before them Yukine starts into the story of the 'sorcerer' Ebisu. It being from solely his point of view with only a few of the gaps filled in with things he heard later, he'll admit that the details are thin in places. But he hits all the important things, he thinks.

The hunt for the sorcerer using masks on ayakashi. That the investigation found Ebisu guilty, but at that time for some reason Ebisu was in the underworld. That for some reason Yato pursued him there. Everything about the judgement on Ebisu that had been carried out before Yukine's very eyes. Ebisu's subsequent reincarnation.

He feels no need to expand much on Yato's involvement nor mention his 'Father'. It didn't really have anything to do with the subject of heaven's judgement anyway.

Although he's doing all the talking his melon soda float is long gone by the time he gets to the end.]

And after all that, the real sorcerer is still out there. He just threw Ebisu-sama under the bus to take the attention off himself.

[He scowls and ruthlessly crushes the straw that had been in his drink.] 'The heavens are righteous'. But they sure as hell don't get everything right every time.
reformedsinner: (inner debate)

[personal profile] reformedsinner 2016-04-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hakkai only smiles when Yukine asks if he's buying, but when they order, he pays for the melon soda as well as his own tea and small cookie plate.

By the end of the story, the tea seems less calming. It's not really a story of the viciousness of Heaven. It's a story of how very gullible Heaven can be, and when Hakkai's own existence and that of his god rest on Heaven's sufferance, that's not calming.]

They didn't listen to the evidence?

returnedfromtheline: (| he's *too* good at the gossip thing)

[personal profile] returnedfromtheline 2016-04-17 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they did, in their way. There was no doubt that Ebisu-sama was using ayakashi- they found the masks, Ebisu-sama was blighted, hell, he used ayakashi right in front of all of us.

They just don't think anyone else was involved. The evidence on that point has been carefully concealed by the real sorcerer, I bet. [Not that that hasn't stopped the other gods of fortune being cast in a bad light. (It's hard to not hear things sometimes. People in Takamagahara can be such gossips.)]
