TEST DRIVE # 09



Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.



Old Officials

There's a business that is desperately wishing the older members of their workforce would bow out. They've been sitting on death's door for so long and are doing little to help the company. The younger managers only want to step up and take their place! Help convince these ancient businessmen to step down.

Peanut Party

A celebration for peanuts is sweeping through the city. Peanut butter, peanut cookies, even just plain peanuts are being sold, thrown, and praised all over. It's your job to help spread the peanut love, either by helping to make the tasty treats or by buying more peanuts from the next town over.

Quiet Quail

Oddly enough, a request has come in from a quail, of all creatures. It thinks very highly of itself and knows that it's super mega important, but it has such a hard time being anything but quiet. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to draw attention to this quail - make it stand out like not other quail has done before.

Roaring Riders

A rowdy motorcycle gang has been plaguing the streets for a few weeks. Every night, at midnight, they make their engines roar out in unison, waking everybody in town. The riders themselves are good guys, they just have this one nasty habit that they refuse to give up because it pays tribute to their patron god. Do you have the heart to get them to quiet down?

Slick Sevens

The newest tourist stop is a large casino. It's said that everyone who enters the casino has their luck stolen from them at the door. That might just be silly superstitions and bad gamblers talking, but there is definitely an ayakashi there who seems to feed on people's luck. Maybe that's what's causing everyone to lose so much.

[Natsuru unwittingly saying embarrassing things is just a habit that can not be broken. She should be thankful it didn't lead to something worse.]

[ Having a better sense of self-preservation than Ichigo isn't particularly hard, but he understands what she means. Chewing on his bottom lip, Kisuke doesn't say anything for a minute or two. ]

Between you, Kensei, and I, we might be able to make something suitable, or that will at least take and keep the edge off. Getting - or rather making - the right equipment might take the most time. I'd feel better about the chances with a couple others of Captain level around, but I doubt whoever is bringing us here is taking requests.

How long has he been here and how bad has it gotten?

Massage at the same time before a dip in the pool. Might not be up his alley, but hopefully his wife will like it.

[ Kisuke pursed his lips. ]

So we've got travel locked, hotel stay checked, and the cruise. Are we missing anything?

[A quick grin is there and gone in a brief flash of amusement] Kensei will complain, but he'll help.

[Unconsciously, the weight she's been carrying ever since she'd first seen Zangetsu lightens, and the knot of tension loosens inside her, just a bit. Obstacles don't look quite so insurmountable with Kisuke here.]

We got here at the same time, so about a month now. And he's still controlling it, but it's getting harder. [She frowns.] He's too close to the ayakashi for me to trust the older gods and shinki with this. I didn't want to ask them for help unless it was a last resort.

[makinuscream]

[ Based on what she tells, Kisuke plans for a couple of weeks with the hope of a month. To the latter, he nods in complete agreement. Even the Soul Society would take exception to Zangetsu. ]

It might not hurt to poke around and see if they have anything similar. [ Discretely of course. ] Still, I think we'll have more luck with a from scratch solution.

Especially since it seems like none of them know why we're getting dragged here.

[Now Aya's a little confused, because why is he bowing back? He's a man, he's a grown-up, he's clearly from a good background - she's not quite sure where those clothes are from, but they're clearly well-made and, well, nice. Wherever it is, though, maybe it's more respectful to return a gesture like that?

[It's probably something like that. She smiles again,because that seems natural, and clearly the politest thing, too.]

Um... well, yes. My mother taught me how to bake.

[Hold the smile, Aya. He means nothing by it, and your problems are not his concern.]

I don't think we ever made these specifically, but she did show me how to make cookies and the recipe's basically the same. Hers were a lot better, though. And I'm sure your wife's would be, too. Experience really helps, and I don't have that much yet, really.

"That is my ideal, though," he explains calmly. They'd had a bit of a chat once or twice now so the bitterness of the divide in their world was more muted. This is a pure difference of opinion. "Another Sanzo told me something similar once, about a year ago now, which strengthened my resolve again. If I die here again - if we can die here again - and it's for those same ideals Kougaiji-sama believes in, it'll be worth it. I'm not 'throwing away my life' like I thought I had to before. There are just some things worth dying for. That's all."

And he's smiling the whole time too. "If you find it so distasteful though, I can work this mission by myself." He hadn't traveled with Genjyo-sanzo like Gojyo had, but he's pretty sure based on that one long encounter with Zakuro that being a Sanzo comes with blinders to a goal. If the mission isn't her goal, he doesn't care. He still needs to keep busy to stop his mind from wandering too far into the fast.

[he's dead because SOMEONE coughYwachcough is a big fat jerk and no amount of divine intervention was going to fix that.]

Download some viruses, destroy their paperwork, change information in their text files... I wanna make it look like these idiots have lost their minds. Hehehehe.

[he was press-ganged into "helping", but the amnesic Hollow-slash-Zanpakutou-now-Shinki is doing the exact opposite; he has found a particularly interesting looking cog and is trying to work it out of the machine. He has his talons worked into the cracks and edges, and has his feet against the contraption for extra leverage]

I-- Want-- THIS--!

[nope. the shiny thing is good and stuck. Zangetsu pulls the enormous sword from his back. Maybe he just needed a different tool...]

They've been living apart for so long, but he can still see that flash of excitement across Gojyo's face. He can't help but soften his expression in response too; Gojyo recognizes him. It's not a flippant 'took you long enough' like you'd give an errand boy who didn't act quick enough. This is his same kid brother alright, down to the smart-ass remarks, heavensent personal hell illusion or not.

"Was I expected?" He asks genuinely with a bit of laughter in his voice. He lets the beer go and sits down next to Gojyo. "Not in ten million years did I expect to see a familiar face 'round here." Especially with the short explanation he'd been given by the Messenger. It sounded like he'd been bounced from one task-based job to another, this one just on a higher authority he still didn't think he'd earned.

It's still weird talking to Konzen. He's not sure it'll ever stop being weird. It would've been less weird in the beginning, before he went and got himself a pep talk from Genjyo-sanzo alongside Yaone. Doku still has the gut reaction to just the deck the guy on principal, but focuses on looking through the bushes at his pursuers. Thankfully, they haven't spotted him just yet. Time to attempt to reassure his partner for the mission.

"Get in, get out - that's the fastest way to get a job done, isn't it?" He asks in a low voice and means it. "My shinki's not here and neither is yours; what else did you expect a Family God to do to a bunch of motorcycles? Crush them in a hug?"

Not like the guy offered up any other plans anyway. He'd gotten too frustrated with the smart remarks and constantly shooting down his plans, so he'd just run off and left Konzen here to play lookout. At least he'd done that much - they hadn't been spotted yet.

Mess up my work and I'll make you light each firework individually~

[ That psuedo threat comes with Kisuke preparing a barrier kidou just in case his very assistant decides the risk is worth it. ]

You can take anything you want once we're done. For now, could you hand me that last sack of peanuts?

[ Kisuke has emptied about three hundred pounds of peanuts into his devices so far, but one more surely won't hurt. ]

[he gives Urahara a petulant look that puts even Ichigo's best pouts to shame. The sword-spirit uses his previous master's facial features well] That's not hard to do. [as long as you don't mind them all exploding at ground level from a surge of spirit energy, since... that's how he would probably try and "light" them.

But, he's already encountered Urahara's barriers a few times tonight, and some of them have even delivered a nasty shock. Getting the gear RIGHT NOW isn't worth it.

Probably.

He huffs and lays his sword down to go and grab the other sack of peanuts]

What does this machine even DO?

Dokugaku nods. "Don't cause a scene, you mean." He's a decent fighter with his sword and he knows shinki are capable of a few defensive maneuvers in their human form, but that still doesn't mean it's an ideal combat lineup. Not for a full-blown ayakashi.

Then he smirks a bit. "Well think of it this way - they're sucking up good luck, right? Neither of us have much of that in the first place, so we shouldn't be prime targets at all."

It's a jab at himself as much as Hakkai, but also one he doesn't mind making since he knows this guy has no clue about their past scraps. It's also casting a pretty wide net, not a specific memory, so it's gotta be safe right? He's not looking to blight his own brother after all.

[She doesn't recognize him, does she? He can hear it in her thoughts - nothing but free cookies and the chipper attitude of a girl unaware just how much had changed around her. Where was Abyssinian now? He just had to gloat - after making sure she was completely out of reach again.

For now, letting a little sheep roam in the pen wasn't going to hurt him.]

What a shame for those who are allergic to the stuff. Lucky for me I'm not.

[And because he's greedy...]

One each is an option, isn't it?

Hm? Oh, um, of course!

[Just let her find a bag.

[Okay, two bags.

[Still, Aya's going to frown just a little bit, and just in confusion, really! because that's - let's see. One, two, three-- okay, yeah, that is quite a lot of cookies, enough that she'd probably feel slightly ill. On the other hand, this man is very tall. He can probably eat a lot more than she can.]

Do you want one each of the plain ones, too?

"And to make sure we can kill it," Hakkai agrees. "Only a shinki wielded by their god can do that."

They're likely to cause a scene regardless, but at least mortals are going to forget about it.

With a bright smile, he adds, "Please, there's no need to lump my luck in with yours!"

[It's not her imagination. Even as he stands still, he puts all of his weight on the other leg for now, leaving the second just slightly bent at the knee as he watches. He's never seen anything like that before... How fascinating.]

That's a nice ability. [Shifting, he turns back to her.]

Well, it seems better like this. Should I leave the rest to you finding someone, then?

It seems the most chance-dependent to me, at least, which I think will attract the ayakashi the best.

Unless you've got a better idea.

[Hiyoko agrees and approves of her shinki's initiative. This does need to be contained. And with a deep breath, she raises one leg and delivers an impressive kick to the door. The rotting wood gives away around the lock and it slams open.

The bold approach does catch the ayakashi by surprise for a moment. Tasty snacks aren't usually so... decisive about confronting it.]

This is your last day of preying on innocent souls! The goddess of the hunt arrives! Face me, demon!

[The magical girl speech was totally necessary. Clearly. She's really weird.

At any rate, the ayakashi is more than willing to accept that challenge. It was planning on eating her anyway. Now that they have a better look at it, the creature resembles a large dog with red eyes and several rows of sharp teeth in it's gaping maw. It roars, and then charges. Hiyoko crouches into a defensive stance.]

Yeah, she might just. Even if she doesn't, there's a lot of options.

[She hums quietly under her breath.]

Did we want to rush them into going, or is this enough? I could look for a calendar entry or something, or make a post it of his wife's birthday, or something.

[Yeah good plan. Poor Mao though, his only companion is a quail that's about to fall asleep.

But she might have heard him, maybe not, it's hard to say. But she goes off, but she goes off, and about ten or so minutes later, she comes back, with a bag swinging in her hands.]

Sorry to keep you waiting! Anything happen?

[She didn't know if anything could happen, other then burd being burd but you know.]

[He wonders vaguely if she still lives with her mother, or if she's already been married... if it's experience she needs, maybe she could come spend some time with Abigail and Nabby, give them help around the children...]

Well, commitment is the only way to gain experience. [Takes another bite of the cookie.]

So you have made your own innovations, splendid, splendid. If I could convince the army to be this clever, maybe we'd be winning...
