TEST DRIVE # 07

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Echoing Endlessly

Many people in the area are complaining about a strange echo following them around. It never seems to go away and, in fact, collects more and more echoes with each passing moment, creating a cacophony of sound. There have been reports of a few people slowly going crazy because of this echoing. It's your job to find what's causing it and put an end to the echoes!

French Frenzy

The new craze has swept over the city! Everything French is so in right now, and everyone wants something newer and Frenchier to make them stand out from the crowd. Just your luck, you happen to have something very French you can peddle - or maybe you can convince someone just how French your very Japanese things are!

Gateway Guardians

A very strange old shinki has left you with a very simple request: guard this door and don't let anyone through. It looks like a totally normal door on a totally normal house! You might be curious to peek through it, but it's locked and you were told not to go through yourself either...

Helping Hands

There's an ayakashi roaming around that is literally just hundreds of hands that randomly grab people and things and move them around before disappearing. The odd thing is that they are... actually doing good things? Maybe it's a scheme to suck people into a plagued afterlife without being caught, or maybe they just really want to help people out.

Irksome Illusions

There's a certain street in the downtown area that has some of the craziest rumors being spread about it. Apparently going down this street will just bring you back to the entrance, but when you turn around to head back you'll only find yourself at the entrance again. Moreover, there are a lot of creepy things that whisper and appear as you walk, more with each turn you make...

[Don't? Okay, he listens to that, but his eyes are getting teary as he thinks about just how much he's wronged this person.]

Uuuuu... Kija-dono is too forgiving! To think that he would allow me in his presence, despite me showing my lesser strength in such a manner... [He's crying now, reaching out to half cling to one of his legs.]

Please, Kija-dono! I have already brought so much shame on my master, and now I threaten to bring it to my store, as well! Help me sell this french doll so that I can regain some sense of worth! If there is anyone who has this ability, is it not the man with so much strength that his hand becomes large and beautiful like yours? Uuu... I am nothing but a waste of space!

[Why is he crying, why is he narrating his... thoughts?? His feelings? Whatever all of these words are, Kija is deeply concerned!]

No, you have... your unique merits! [probably, like crying. He's doing his best, having met this kid about five minutes ago.] I will help you sell the doll! I will!!

[Quietly, Souma wipes his eyes to get the tears away. It takes him a moment, and he definitely sniffles a lot, but at least the tears have stopped for now.]

Kija-dono is truly an admirable person. That's right... I cannot simply sit here and allow myself to wallow in pity when there is work to be done! With Kija-dono's help, perhaps I can finally be rid of this menace that is haunting our store!

[He holds up the kappa doll to Kija from the ground.] I was told to emphasize how french it is, but it does not seem to be helping. Perhaps your wisdom can shed some light on what techniques I am missing.

[Well, he takes?? the doll??? What does he do with this?]

I— my wisdom does not cover... what a "french" is... I am deeply sorry.

Allow me to explain all that I know.

[He stands up, carefully brushing himself off before he gestures at a hand drawn sign nearby. It's got baguettes and croissants all over it, along with the french flag.]

This "France" is a country far from here. It is difficult for me to grasp the appeal of this far away land, but from what I understand, the fact that it is so far and different is why people have grown attached to items from this place. When an item is from "France," it is "French." Therefore, this doll is clearly... "French!"

...But I do not know how.

[Okay, a far away land, he can jive with that. He nods along, looking curiously at the doll, trying to figure out what makes it "French"...

Nope. Nothing.]

It looks like a green duck.

A green duck.

[For a moment, Souma stares at the thing as if he's judging this assessment. But then there's a single firm nod.]

Then perhaps that is the key! That a green duck is what it means to be "french!" A mascot, if you will. If I may, could I attempt my new sales speech on Kija-dono?

[Were Kija worldly at all, he might notice how utter bullshit and impossible that suggestion is. There are no other green ducks around here, being peddled as French things... oh well.]

Ah- yes! Please do your best!

Kija-dono! That is to say, kind sir! Please view this item I have here, the majestic green duck from "France!"

[He holds it out confidently.] Such an item is so well loved in "France" that it has limited availability here! I believe it calls to you in such a way that it can only belong in your hands! So, shall we seal a purchase?

Of course, I would be happy to purchase several of these "French" ducks!

[Something about this response suggests he would have said this no matter what. Just something. Like, everything about it.]

[Souma knows no better. He looks very serious as they finish this "exchange," offering the doll over before he breaks into a smile.]

Kija-dono has done it! This is great news! With this new technique, I can surely sell dozens of these "French" ducks! Please, tell me how I can repay such a great warrior who has blessed me with his time!

[Success!! Now he's pretend-purchased this doll, and all is well.]

Well... [WELLLLLLLL] Although we have just met, your dedication to your duties has impressed me!

[Even though ten minutes ago it was dangerous, whatever, he already forgot that.] So, as a sign of our new bond... you may call me 'big brother'.

[The entire time Kija is working up to this, Souma is staring intently and leaning closer with each word. Yes? Bond?? Yes, he's impressed??

And then the request comes across, and Souma blinks in surprise, leaning back as his cheeks color slightly.]

B-big brother? I'm not sure how to say this, but a request of this nature from anyone else would be seen as nothing less than sinister. Certainly it would be reacted to poorly. However, coming from Kija-dono, I cannot help but feel this is a pure request from his heart.

...Therefore, as a symbol of this bond, Kija-dono will now be "Big brother!"

[He's even pinker yelling that than he was at the start.]

[S-sinister?! It can't be!!]

It— it is a pure request! I would never ask something sinister of you! Please consider it a gesture of mutual respect!!

[Well now they're both pink and shouting, good job.]

Does this mean we are warrior brothers? Will big brother refer to me in turn as "little brother?"

[Does... does he have warrior family now?? He's still a little pink, but now he's getting into this! Because he trusts those words, of course.]

[Warrior brothers!! Just wait until he tells Jae-Ha.]

Of course!! As the little brother, please feel free to come to me if you ever need any assistance!

[Here... touch his big hand. Touch it.]

[He doesn't just touch it, he reaches forward and grasps it with both of his own.]

Big brother...! [Is he teary eyed? A little.] I will work my hardest to deserve such a kind name and companionship! Please wait eagerly for the day that my hand grows to be as large and powerful as yours!

[Brother!!!

That's probably not going to happen, but Kija doesn't have the heart to spoil it for him. Ah...]

To have such unending support is truly an honor. It nearly brings me to tears, but a warrior should not cry...!

[He's got this, he's got this!! He closes his eyes tight so not to cry, right after taking that green duck back.]

[That doesn't make sense but he has a younger brother to support now, so he's going to do it!!]

Hm? Big brother has done more than enough for me.

[Though, he's still not going to manage to sell this very quickly. Someone will take pity on his sad self, but how many crowds will he scare away with his katana? Blinking away the remains of whatever tears had been forming before, he smiles warmly over his shoulder at Kija.]

Please carry on as a great warrior.

[He feels like he should stay here and make sure that katana doesn't get waved in anyone's face again... but lowkey, so he doesn't embarrass Souma doing his best.]

[read: lurking behind something conspicuously and staring]

[For a while, Souma does alright! He offers his speech to people politely, most of them don't notice him at all and pass by. But eventually, he fires himself up so much that he whips out his katana again and begins swinging it around, causing panic.

This gimmick is terrible.]

Wait, come back! Allow me to tell more stories of this "French" green duck!

[He was doing so well! Why the sword?! Kija doesn't even try to make it look like he was just passing by again, he marches out very obviously from his stupid hiding place. Disapproval is everywhere.]

You are doing it again! Is this any way for a younger brother to behave?!
