Test Drive #20

TEST DRIVE # 20

Whether you're trying to figure out how your character would fare in this setting, trying to get some samples together, or just dipping your toes in the water, you've come to the right place! The Test Drive is here to make your life easy by letting you see what the game is like without actually joining it first. So here is how it works:

1: Post a starter with your character, including whether they are a god or shinki in the subject line.
2: Act like your character is established enough in the setting to allow your thread to go places.
3: Take on any god/shinki of your choosing, as long as they're not already in the game!
4: Comment around to the other people on the meme.
5: Have lots of fun!

To get you started, here are some ideas for thread-starters! Feel free to come up with your own ideas if these don't strike your fancy, though.

Rope bridge Rumble

An adventure park that features several scary-exciting climbs and crossings between trees using only ropes has a huge problem. The ropes are getting unexpectedly tangled up. Even worse, it sometimes happens when a customer is trying to make a crossing, tripping them up in the midst of their course! While the safety ropes have been doing their job at keeping customers uninjured, the employees are fervently praying that whatever is doing this will go away, before something worse happens.

Steady Shave

It's the height of summer, and even men that treasure their beards, mustaches and sideburns dearly are driven to get it shaved off in the name of heat reduction. Small barbershops are being overrun with customers who want it all shaved off- some even going so far as to want their head shaved bare.
Answer the barber's pleas for a couple extra hands. May they be steady.

Toil and Trouble

A performance of Macbeth is being haunted by an ayakashi causing bad luck. Props getting misplaced or needing repairs, color gels for the lights getting torn, the microphones keep kicking up feedback- The customary wish of 'break a leg' feels dangerously close to becoming real. Rescue the Scottish Play from its curse before the curtain rises!

Ubiquitous U-turns

Elementary school children go home in groups for safety. However that measure isn't helping against some children getting home very late. And none of the kids can bring themselves to say why they end up taking so many wrong turns on the way. Take up a traffic flag and your best teacher voice, and help the children find their proper way home, keeping an eye out for anything - mundane or supernatural - that might be leading the kids astray.

Violet Veranda

Cheerful violets grew unusually well this year on the college dorm veranda, to the point where the whole perimeter of the veranda is full of containers holding them. But now the flowers are nearing the end of their life, and something strange is happening to the students at the same time. As the flowers wilt and fade, so does the energy of the students living in the dorm. While it would normally be impossible to draw a connection between the two, residents of the Far Shore can see the truth- tiny ladybug-like energy-hungry ayakashi are moving from flowers to students. Take care of this however you can before the last petal falls!

Flooding would easily destroy their home, but most bugs know how to swim. [Drowning takes much longer than burning alive anyway. And it's far enough away from the flowers that he can go pretty hard on it. ...Though, should be mindful of stray embers.]

[The winged staff suddenly had a red spark to it, he's all charged up.]
I can do that easily. Unless you got a better idea.

[ Flashback to meeting her shinki, and the fact that this is always accompanied by seeing their death, whether you want to or not. Hibiki averts her eyes, looking unwell. ]

...You shall.

With apt creativity, or by collecting shinki until you receive one with an offensive form.

[ One could probably get away with tackling an ayakashi with rend, if their shinki were the right sort of item for it, like shirts and helmets. Just as most things could be made deadly with the right application. ]

I suppose I am. It was a simple enough adjustment, even when I arrived and received my first god. Speaking of; you're free to either revoke or keep the name you've given me in case my services will be needed again. However my primary god, Mister Spears, has ultimate command should any orders conflict.

The pleasure is mine. And no, I don't have the patience. I just happened to come across them.

[While Hakkai works one end of the line, Elena is working the others, helping bring the children together and confirming hands are connected. Whatever magic he was using was working.]

You have a gift. [After a quick scan of the area, she points to her left.] I see a row of homes that way. Lets start there.

I have some experience -- some years ago, I did teach preschool.

[He glances to the left, following her gesture, and nods.]

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Lead the way; I'll follow them and make sure no one runs off.

[With quiet curiosity, Elena watched the woman. Surely she wasn't trying to be rude, the body language was all wrong. But it was odd, still, for her to not only remove the helmet, but to continue to be mute.]

...Oookay. [Since now she was having to be the literal face of the pair, Elena gave the group of children a friendly smile.] Listen up, children. We're going to go on a walk around the neighboorhood. If we get close to your house, please say "I live near here, Miss Laney!" Okay? Lets go.

[She gives a gentle tug of the first child's hand, waving the rest to follow with her other. Before turning fully forward, she turns her eyes to the helmeted woman.]

Could you make sure none wander off back there? There are a bit too many of them for me to handle alone.

It shows. You have a way with them.

[And a second later]

All right, little ones, we're going to start on our adventure. Make sure you hold hands when we cross the street.

[Speaking of streets, they had already reached their first one with a car pulling up. Elena takes the first step out, shooting a glance at the driver, who comes to a halt with plenty of space between bumper and the crosswalk.]

Here we go. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot..
reformedsinner: (ha ha ha!)

You're quite good with them yourself! Perhaps it's an undiscovered talent.

[He keeps a cautious eye on the car. It's not that he thinks the driver would deliberately run down small children; it's just that the two tallest people in this group are hard to notice, and he wants to be sure their presence isn't forgotten before they're out of the road.

Luckily, the driver seems to be keeping an eye on the parade of kids, and Hakkai follows the last of the children up safely onto the curb before he takes his foot off the brake. He calls out to the children.]

Now, when you see your house, say something!

[Celty nods and keeps up the back of the line as requested. In fact she does what might be a better job of it than expected considering how quiet she is. But she keeps a good few kids within arm's reach at all times.

What the kids don't quite notice but Elena might is that whenever any of them that are beyond her reach linger too long or try to wander off a small black tendril of shadow sprouts from the ground and pushes or pulls them back in the right direction, always vanishing before they can see what bumped them.
]

She'd be lying if Elena wasn't grateful to have the help, even if said help was a helmet wearing mute. So long as she was able to keep the children in line - and she was - then Elena wouldn't complain.

Slowly each child was returned to their homes, the line shrinking until there were only a few left. Everything was going splendidly, though something felt...off. As she knelt down to help one of the children whose shoes had come unlaced, she had seen something that didn't quite look right. Another child, further back with the helmeted woman, was starting to wander off when something...black and smoky reached out and brought them back.

What kind of 'stigma is that?

For the rest of the drop-offs Elena is mindful to watch the woman, looking for that smokey tendril, to confirm she's not seeing things.
