I didn't realize it at first in the anime, even though I think it also states it. Once I started reading the manga, I was like, "Finally, a nerd in my flavor!" Kaneki actually directly references several literary works, both poems and novels (like Kafka's Metamorphosis) and seems to be inclined toward Japanese and European literature.
